Depends how your business in being run, I know with the way we run our business (my family towing business) We trade in at 150k miles on almost every truck we own before the warranty is up, with doing that and the kind of business we get, we have had pretty good luck with it and if we get a lemon we just trade it in early and move on, but if your running your business and you buy a 100k used truck from private sale for example and you get absolutely screwed by not knowing what you were looking at perhaps then your business may very well be done for, not saying that's the most common failure or that's the only way just an example, but yeah it can go either way depends on how your business is structured.

I might add that he's not very environmentally focused. The only reason gliders exist is because you can stuff a driveline in there from 1998 to skirt emissions standards. He may know his truck, but he also knows how much it pollutes. Whether he loves his job or hates it, is in it for the kicks or the money, he's not doing particulate emission levels any favours. Why am I unable to install a carburettor and remove the cat, evap, EGR, all that stuff into a modern car? Why is that illegal and this isn't, seeing how trucks put a hell of a lot more miles on and have much larger engines than passenger cars? Bureaucratic bullshit, and old timey nostalgia from fit drivers such as this fine example. Last point - "You don't get into a truck for fun." What? Why is there such a following for truck sims? I suppose pilots don't get into the plane for fun either, no passion at all, just work? Get real man. Just because you don't like trucking, why not let this driver?

When you average 150k a year the difference between 4.2 mpg and 5.2 mpg is huge! He has no EGR to contaminate his motor oil and intake charge,no DPF ,no DOC and no DEF to fill and cause breakdowns . He is a knowable trucker. I'm. Diesel mechanic for a major rental company. I have worked on Freightliners,volvos and peterbilts. Yes the Emissions equipment are getting better but they still have problems and the cost is very expensive. A cummins dpf filter is $2500. Intake and outlet nox sensors $550+ each. SCR catalyst $5000 I'm not kinding have replaced and diag buch if these. The Detroit dd15 afftertreamant systems are a little better in reliability but when it breaks it is a hight repair cost. The Detroit 60 Series is a good pre- Emissions motor it will leak oil though and lot of it but that's 60 series for you.

@dieselfixr
@dieselfixr 5 лет назад
@@renesantos6786 to be honest are fleet does not have a lot of Volvo d13 so my answer will be based on what I have worked on which will be about 10 d13 engines I have worked on. For the most part there are good engines the most common issues for the Emission system is the after- treatment fuel doser valve module which sends an air and fuel mixture for when a parked regen or active regen is needed to raise the temperatures. I have replaced that module 8 of the 10 d13 engines i have worked on. The main cause for that module to fail is actually the air compressor failing internally sending oil though out the air lines cause the after- treatment fuel doser valve module to plug up with oil. So usual around 400k to 500k that's when the air compressor starts acting up and shoots oil through out the system. That's about it the rest of the after treatment system is pretty good Reliability wise for the most part a few NOX sensors here and there but not that common Volvo did a pretty good job on that engine design. There Cab systems though THATS A DIFFERANT STORY THEY SUCK!

@comeatmebro. It's not going to be an instantaneous event certainly but long haul truck driving is a good paying job and I see pay dropping as autonomous trucks start filtering into the fleet. At some critical mass of autonomous vehicles, corporations will start asking why should they pay the driver so much if the truck's software is doing all that work?

I don't like the fact that PACCAR is so anal about their engines, that they won't release any technical information to outside shops, so any repairs that have to be done has to be done at a dealership. At least with Cummins and Detroit, there are authorized shops all over the place, so you can get them repaired just about anywhere and not have to pay the inflated prices the dealerships charge.
