Wow, that seems like a premature euthanizing of this car. With that much oil in the intake side of the engine, I'd venture to say 95 to 99% of the smoke is coming from the supercharger. You've gone this far Hoovie, at least have him replace the seals on the supercharger. I think you would be pleasantly surprised at the results. Have they done a compression test?? Unless you have one cylinder way out of line from the rest, I don't see how it could be causing that much smoke. As another commented, cylinder and valve seal smoke issues tend to be worse on start up, and decrease after. And most importantly, those are very consistently there or not there. This business of sometimes it just goes from no smoke to heavy smoking after running for a while, points at a supercharger issue. Replace the seals on the compressor for God's sake before you put her down!

Having played a lot with N62s I've learned it's best to prevent valve stem seal (and other seal) issues than it is to chase them after the vehicle is already blowing smoke. That said even after the valve stem seals are fixed it can take upwards of 500 miles before it stops smoking. There's lots of residual gunk and oil where it shouldn't be that makes its way into the combustion chamber. You either have to clean it out or be patient while it burns off.

Keep up the good work, Hoovie. The BMW trap is so easy to fall into - we're seduced by the gorgeous sheetmetal and pure performance of these things, along with relatively affordable resale values. Then we crash on the rocks of reality and soul-crushing repair costs. It's so sad.

I love buying cars like this. That engine block isn’t special, so while a complete alpina assembly is expensive, the actual failed component isn’t. Same thing with rebuilding the supercharger.

Repair the supercharger it will definitely improve the smoking issue and drive the doors off it, 1 scored cylinder wont stop you from enjoying the car.

I’m still waiting to see more of that Z3 M coupe that’s just been causally in the back ground for those 6 months hoovie.

It would take a couple of hours of autobahn driving to burn the residual oil out of the exhaust. Who knows how long the motor has been filling the exhaust up with oil! Take it for a proper drive, give it a good thrashing & see if the smoke gets better.

Ive had a number of friends, and associates, who have temporarily owned a BMW, for status, when the 1st major service came up, and they found out the cost, they promptly relieved themselves of said BMW.

I'll really like you to read this, After doing the valve seals and you still get oil in the intake your problem is the supercharger, get it resealed. The supercharger is know for letting oil through after some time and that what's you saw, as for the engine it's made of Alusil and what causes the cylinder to score is the Oil weight and the thermostat opening temp too high, get a lower temp thermostat and use 20w40 or 20w50 oil and the scoring will be a thing of the past. The engine doesn't have to be that expensive the engine is a derivative from the N62 v8. The block is exactly the same, apina only used a custom piston to reduced the compression. Get the N62 block, transfer your rotating assembly (piston and crankshaft) use the alpina heads and you've got a sound engine. Sorry I'm just seeing this now, i would have been of help if i saw this years ago 😅

I know this is an old video, but all B7 enthusiasts need to know this. If you watch "M539 Restorations" a youtube channel out of Germany, he also had a bad experiece with his Alpina B7. Apparently all B7 cylinder walls have scarring issues. But, and this is a big BUT; he discovered the N62 block is identiacal to the Alpina block. Alpina blocks did have a forged crank, a narrower Piston Compression Height, certainly different Cylinder Heads/Cams, but the blocks were identical. Alpina then stamped their name on the block, but it is a BMW block; not an Alpina Block. So if your Alpina B7 bites the bullet, dont think you have to buy an Alpina short block. Instead get a good N62 engine, have it checked out and swap your Alpina hardware over. To confirm all this go watch, on YT all 15 videos from "M539 Restorations" on Alpina B7 Project Chicago to see what he did. BTW, Alpina is secret BMW code for Moneypit!

We're in Colombia South America, here we have a shop that does all kinds of witchcraft and all BMWs run like a new car, no smoke, everything works, original parts you name it. 5 years ago I went in a ,97 320 I 2.8 liter cross-country and run like a race car. You NEED SOME ONE THATS REALLY KNOWS THOSE CARS!

Don't know if this has been addressed before, but a quick assessment for bad valve seals is smoking on deceleration. Go down a long grade, using engine braking (sometimes difficult with a slushomatic). If valve seals are bad, that is when you will get clouds.

Send it to M539 Restorations. He can fix anything, and oil in the blower is normal according to him.

There was oil in the charge pipe when it was removed. I know the valve stem seals are a problem on these cars but it seems the more likely root cause (supercharger seals/bearings) was not even addressed.

Believe me, I've owned the BMW V12 2006 for seven years, and it's worth every penny spent on it, even though it pees oil, at least it makes you feel alive, and there's a lot worse cars out there.

This is why people like hoovies shouldn't buy cars like this. A real Collector, collects. Sometimes you eat the cost of certain cars but you collect because you believe in the beauty and legacy of the product you're buying. You believe that a sound financial investment sometimes goes under but at the end of the day you make money by living your dream. To send such a car to the junkyard or to part it out is a true shame. Wish more channels sought out complete restorations and genuinely took care of these rare examples. If you junk them then how will future generations see them. Sad.

Wow for a second I thought this was the Alpina that ended up in Germany with M539 restorations 🤣

Do a cylinder compression test, if there is a leak through the piston rings you could have overpressure in the crankcase. If the oil pressure release is in the air box it can leak on the compressor, making you think the compressor is leaking so check for oil between the air box and the compressor. If the Compressor is leaking just use a rebuild kit and check for play, it's not rocket science. Also just clean the intercooler, it's not gonna intercool much if it's full of oil. Also if you can't repair the compressor, you still have a v8 so I really don't get why you would scrap it.

All these people clamoring for an LS swap in this electrical nightmare have no idea what they're talking about.

I know this may sound basic, BUT was the PCV system checked out and in good working order? I have seen quite a few cars burn a ton of oil due to a faulty PCV system.

As an Engine Reconditioner, the Bore isn't too bad, Your SC is the culprit. Do the Seal kit & then see how it performs

I have a friend with a 2016 X5 with twin turbos with 38,000 miles. He bought it online out of Texas. Looks great but the car was losing more than a litre of oil in less than three weeks time. Fortunately it had extended warranty. A BMW dealer pulled the engine and changed the valve seals. It was still losing as much oil after the seal replacement. They then replaced his engine. This video now makes me think that it might have been the turbos the whole time. The dealership didn't care as they made their money via the warranty. Once the engine was in though I believe the warranty is invalidated after all of the work. BMWs scare me.

Americans just never learn. Sophisticated cars need service and maintenance!!! In Germany we take proper care of our cars. When something is broken, we immediately fix it. When something is making a noise, we have it looked at. We do scheduled maintenance. We do yearly inspections. Here you can find 7 series BMWs with 300.000km and more that still run perfectly fine. There was a E39 5 series with ONE MILLION kilometers in a German car magazine a few years back, that still ran fine! How are those same BMWs totalled after 150.000 miles (240.000km) in America???

As they say, "there's nothing more expensive than a cheap BMW" Had a 2008 750 for two years. Loved that car, but spent $9000 on a bunch of minor repairs. Got rid of it before I had to replace the transmission and valve covers. Between repairs and depreciation, would have cost less to lease a new one.

If you you came here doing some n62 searching I'll share a fix that actually works and you don't have to tear the engine down. Remove the valve covers and get some Barrs Valve Seal conditioner or something similar. Fill a syringe and pour over the valve stems and let it soak. I poured it over each valve seal and let it soak over night then did it again before sealing it up. No smoke since. I did that at 275k miles when it was smoking a lot. I mean a whole lot. I'm at 326k miles now. Can't speak to how the supercharger would affect it though.

7:13 the fact that there are more 7 series parked outside johnny's garage than i've seen driving in the past year is a good enough reason to make me never get one

LS SWAP THE DAMN THING

Just buy a seal kit and rebuild the supercharger , that’s your oil burning issue .. not the motor .. look at the amount of oil in the intercooler , that’s all coming from the SC

Last year I parted with a much loved 2001 540i Sport after ten years of good and reasonably trouble free use. Timing chain guides had failed at c. 160k and it was just too much of a project to take on. Why BMW built car with plastic guides idk. Otherwise, biggest issue I had was changing the alternator. These cars require regular attention but upkeep cost with the right one isn't terrible if you can do most of your own work. Still miss it though. It was a lot of fun to drive.

Johnny, I just wanted to point out that the car is probably ok, the only thing needing a refurb is the Super Charger, after all, if the supercharger is blowing oil, it will definitely blow the oil into the intake where it will be then burnt. I cannot believe this car is going to be mechanically totalled just because of an oil seal failure. If that were the case, all turbos with shaft play would send any car to the junkyard.

This mechanic of yours man jhonny is a really honest guy you can see how he instantly says “ im gonna refund your money cause i didnt fix it” and then when you said you were gonna dump it, you can see him feel bad like “ its my fault” wish we had people like him here in spain

I hate to say it but it's very simple. You did all that engine work for nothing. Your valve seals were fine... your only problem was the seal in the supercharger. Fix that and the car will be fine
