I have a 2017 Kia optima that is a EF I think which means energy efficient. It's not a sports car but I like it I'm sure the hell hope I don't start having any problems I'm at 20,000 miles and so far it drives like a dream I bought it certified with 12,000 miles and I have the warranty that comes with it and I bought an additional warranty. Scotty just check the pcv value or change with brand new one and check it stops burning oil. Because what i was experience before they had issue with PCV valve going bad even if it done only 1000 miles. And I'm not in the US but dealership in here are more useful and friendly with customers they even list the all common issues and they fix those free even when you out of the 7year warranty. It doesn't matter you needs an engine for company fault they do it gor you for free.

On my 2012 Kia Soul I travelled over 330,000km on it and had just about zero problem. The only problem I can remember was the alternator failing at around 280km which was only natural considering the mileage. It was the most problem-free car I have ever had driven. I'm the 2nd owner of a 2011 (1st gen.) Kia Soul. The instrument cluster failed quickly, but fortunately there was still a short time frame of warranty left, so that repair was covered. I've now driven this Soul over 100,000 miles with reasonable normal maintenance. It still runs and drives super good, and still burns no oil. The only constant issues throughout this time is the radio won't power up about a quarter of the time, and maybe 1% of the time, the heat/AC fan won't work. Those issues have been consistent for years and have not gotten worse over time.

The crazy thing about cars; regardless of the make, sometimes you get a good one, sometimes you get a bad one. I’ve got a 2.0L 2010 Kia Soul w/ just under 300K miles. It doesn’t burn a drop of oil. The only thing I’ve had to replace is tires, headlight bulbs, 1 tag light bulb, a battery, and the AC belt. It’s not a sexy car, but it’s never left me stranded. If I had to complain about anything, it would be that if I leave the headlight selector in the automatic position, when you turn the car off the tail lights will stay on if I leave the key in the ignition and kill the battery.

you are a good mechanic but not always right. especially about KIAs. ofcourse they once made crappy cars just like any other car manufacturer at one point or the other. KIA makes some of the best average cars and they do last long under regular use. its unfair to talk about recalls or recurrent issues with some parts on some models etc. that happens across board including toyotas and hondas.I have owned three generations of kia sportage and one year model of Kia rio with no complaints. I currently use 2014 honda Civic and a 2017 kia forte which even runs way better and has limited running costs than the civic. those who use the cars aint complaining but you are. i think you just hate the fact that they have taken over the American market pretty much. looking at the performance of the telluride and other kia models. I had a 08 Sorento that I bought brand new I definitely agree with the warranty work that they don’t really want to back from the dealership. On mine the roof rack was assembled wrong and the rear bar was put in front of the rear stop. It probably wouldn’t have been a problem except the only way to remove the stops and move the bar behind it was to remove the whole roof rack. The screw for the stop was at the bottom of the bar. The dealership was pissed when I demanded they fix it so I could actually separate the bars farther than 10 inches. They told me you realize that’s a big job…..well yeah I do but you sold me a defective product so fix it. They were so mad they had to remove the window and headliner just to remove two screws it took them 3 weeks to get it done. At first they didn’t want to give me a rental car either so I had to call Kia and complain lol. They told me if I needed anymore warranty work to go to another dealer. Never bought another car from them again.

"They told me if I needed anymore warranty work to go to another dealer."....absolutely amazing dude, and totally believable! I worked for a Chrysler dealer in OKC back in the 90's. You speak truth! Nothing made the dealer and shop manager angier than warranty work. The biggest problem in their case was getting reimbursed by the manufacturer for the labor, parts and not making a profit while doing it...that's why they hated it! Their mechanics didn't work for free and parts obviously cost money. Then there's the fact that a ZERO profit "warranty work" car was now taking up both time and space in the repair bay. I read somewhere that dealers and manufacturers are basically at war, until a customer shows up...then it's both of them against you! (it's very true!)

Having had two family members that had Kia's which both had serious engine and steering problems, in both cases Kia fought them tooth and nail to deny warranty coverage to actually repair the defective designs. Even if a car company offers a 100 year warranty but they refuse to honor the warranty or even acknowledge there is any problem, or when they do honor the warranty but the part they replace still has the same defect as the original part, then the whole "much better warranty" part of the equation gets tossed right out the window. Kia is the IKEA of the automotive world. They along with Hyundai focus mainly on styling, and flashy gadgetry but that comes at a sacrifice which is attention to reliability and/or foolproof design.

Porsche named the most unreliable car brand ahead of Land Rover - is your maker among the 10 worst performers?" Warrantywise has named the worst brands for reliability based on its own data. Worst is Porsche, followed by Land Rover, Jaguar, Audi, BMW, Mercedes Benz. A J D Powers survey put Kia, Hyundai, Suzuki and Honda in top four places for customer satisfaction and least warranty claims. In Oz and NZ they say: "Only Poms and Fools buy European Brands", and here's the supporting evidence.

And Toyota has been doing some shady stuff of late, too. Honda does make a superior car..... but at the prices they want, they damn well better.... I consider my Rio one of the best cars I've ever bought new, trailing only a 2001 Jeep Wrangler (which was wrecked) and a 2007 Chevy Silverado Classic (which I still own). I wouldn't hesitate to buy another with the same specifications. As it is, I'm likely to rebuild this one, short of it being completely destroyed. I own(ed) two Kias, one is a Kia Soul and the other a Kia Rondo. Both have those crap Theta engines. Both engines blew. The Soul at 90K miles and the Rondo at 115K miles. Kia replaced the one on the Soul, but not the one on the Rondo even though I took it in at 90K because the top end sounded like a Sewing Machine. One thing you should know is the Theta engines have a combination oil pump and balance shaft that feeds unfiltered oil directly from the oil pan. The Balance shaft has bears just like your connecting rods and crank shaft. If you do as Kia tells you and wait till 7500 miles for an oil change, those bears wear out and you reduce oil pump output. Since these Kias use 5-20W oil, which is not very thick, any reduced lubrication will wear out your connecting rob bears, especially cylinder #4 as Scotty points out. Change your oil frequently and as Scotty said y=use synthetic oil unless you plan to get rid of the car before the warranty ends.

I have a 2020 Kia Sportage AWD and I use full synthetic oil as well. I have about 52,000 miles on it. No problems whatsoever. It’s a great car.

Same with the Sorento (at least the one I own). 60K miles, runs like a champ. Same here, full synthetic oil and oil change every 5000 miles.

My 2015 optima is over 150k miles now but needed a second engine for a known recall issue with engines catching on fire. I want to say it happened somewhere between 50 and 70k when my og engine made a pop sound n oil leaked everywhere. Dealer replaced for free but nobody can tell me where my new engine came from n I get free oil changes for the life of the car, it was every 5k but now every 3k n they couldn't explain why that was either.

At this point ngl i don't even worry about the engine. I know ppl are cheap but theyd have to assume someone would lawyer up if it was the same issue again I've had the car 7 years n drove it hella hard but stay on top of basic maintenance. ima drive if til the wheels fall off anyway. I don't think my Vin ever changed since I bought it so the engine prolly has a diff Vin physically stamped on it but it's prolly under the cover. The car overall has served me well, I don't think I'd buy kia again, but only cuz I've had time to save so I have more options than in 2015

You seem to have a grudge on Kia, based on several posts you have... Recently I see more KIAs and Hyundais on the road almost than Hondas and Toyotas. You seem to be still in the only "Honda" and "Toyota" lane. I have a Stinger GT2 AWD 3.3 btw, which was engineered by two former BMW / German engineers. I used to "hate" on Kia too, but they have come a long way from the old days. (they've been in the US since the 80s!!!) Read all your comments, you'll see there are plenty of happy KIA owners with PLENTY of miles on their rides. I think you are stuck in an old school view of KIAs... I remember growing up hearing the saying FORD meant "Fix Or Repair Daily", so are they still in that category? If not, then others may not be as well...

Screw all dealerships! Do your own maintenance from day 1. We bought a brand new 2010 Ford Edge, changed fluids in the first 2,000 miles to Amsoil. Sitting at 172K today with no problems... going strong!

The car has 17,000 miles on it, started burning oil at 15,000 miles, but somehow you're certain it is burning 0.5 liters per 1,000 miles?.... Give it another 5 or 10,000 miles before you declare something so strongly. You've got very limited information. Sounds like the car *might* have burned 1 liter of oil so far. Maybe you just didn't fill it up properly during the last oil change and didn't notice until now?

Interesting, because Kia's are one of the better manufacturers in Australia with warranty. They are not known as oil burners here.

Had my 2014 Soul recalled for the engine Main Bearing issues. I asked how long it would take to check the bottom in. They said not long cause they were going to inspect the bearings with a camera. 😳 Hey, they gave me 2 more years of warranty.🙄

Theta II motors are the problem. From roughly 2013 to 2018. Just run full synthetics, get a valve intake cleaning every 15k miles or so, combustion chamber at around 50k miles and it will keep things clean. I only learned about those 2 months ago. They don't have to take anything apart, both cleanings together ran $650 at Kia. If you have a Kia in those years, make sure you have the knock sensor update, you will have a lifetime warranty on the engine with proof of oil changes. And only use Kia/Hyundai filters, they are made very well.
