What is it with the Tuscadero sisters? First, Pinky disappeared after three episodes during season 4 of "Happy Days" and then Leather shows up for seven more episodes during seasons 5 and 6 only to disappear just like her sister. Here's the truth about Leather Tuscadero and the musician who played her, Suzi Quatro.

I knew I recognized Chris Norman. I forgot he was in Smokie. A very cool 70’s band with great harmony. I was all of 10 in 1977 a few years before Stumblin’ in was a hit but Smokie was so so in popularity in the mid 70’s but I was just 8 when they were on shows like the Midnight Special and now I can say that’s why he reminded me of someone thanks to Dave Sundstrum.

I would have loved a Leather spin-off as a kid . I do believe that Suzi is a much bigger international star and it would have affected that career. I know the band Smokie were big in Europe but not the USA. It is so funny how different populations like different things. The band the Outfield were a English band that became big in the USA back in the 80s yet never had a hit in the UK. It just works out like that sometimes. Love ya Dave!!!

People in North America might only be familiar with Suzi Q from Happy Days or “Stumbling In”, but in the UK, she’s considered Rock Royalty. She had a string of hits over there and she became a household name during the 70s. Smokie we’re also one of those bands who hit it big everywhere BUT North America. If you look into it, the music scene in 1970s Europe was VERY different than over here.

I remember that song from 1979, but I didn’t know, until until this age of RU-vid, that Suzi was so popular around the world. I don’t think that many Americans under the age of 55 even know who she is. She’s like the American version of Kylie Minogue, who is so popular in every English speaking country except for America.

@@jayanxiety Well, this certainly shows the difference in musical tastes between USA & other English speaking countries. If Suzi Quatro already had #one hits in England & Europe for a few years, and then she was a hit on Happy days, (a top show in America). That would certainly boost anyone’s career. Yet she still was barely known in America. - But I have to admit, I’m now just first listening to some of her other #1 hit songs in the UK, (other than “Stumbling in”) and I can see how they were not big hits here in America. (and somewhat surprised that they were #one and in the UK) - The super popular British groups are super popular in America, Beetle. Stones, Zeppelin, Who, Queen, Elton John, etc. etc. Along with many others, I culture club, Duran Duran, George Michael, etc. - But I’ve listen to RU-vid videos of the number one songs during Christmas time and 95% of them I’ve never heard of. And this recent whole sausage biscuit songs (or whatever they are?) with some wacky guy, and also featuring Elton John and Ed Sheeran I’m just baffled that they were number one in the UK.

*"Stumblin' In"* is one of my favorite very 'coming of age' songs in my personal development as a teen. And I wanna thank you, Dave, for taking the subject along that particular pathway. When that song gets played unto a million people that recognize Top 100 radio, that I think at least 35% will feel as I do, while the other 65% would simply appreciate the song's likability. And isn't that the nature of a *"timeless classic?"*

Suzi did one of her songs on Happy Days: "Devil Gate Drive." It was her second number one hit in the Uk, in 1974. It was the episode where Joanie wanted to join the band. She was always one of my favorites on the show.

Suzi was already huge in Australia long before Happy Days. 48 Crash and Devils Gate Drive were massive hits here, so when she showed up on TV even as a kid I was thinking, how can she fit this in when she is touring all the time. I kind of knew it wasn't going to last long simple because she was already a famous rock star. When Suzi left after a few episodes I was sad but not surprised.

I cannot speak as to whether Suzi made a good decision in turning down a starring role in a tv series, but what I do know is that in the UK, she is absolutely revered. Her #1 song, Can The Can is still played today though most Americans have never heard it. She was part of the glitter rock movement that dominated the early to mid 70s in the UK along with such luminaries as Sweet, T-Rex, Slade, and Showaddywaddy.

I'm an American, and I love Suzi Quatro for "Can the Can" alone, but she also had some other great rockers like "Your Mama Won't Like Me." She is the most criminally underrated female rocker of the seventies and possibly of all time. "Stumblin' In" isn't great, but it least it finally got her a hit in her home country. I think that one of her songs being used in the movie 'Times Square' might have stymied any chance she might have had to build on that success in America, because the movie was a flop.

Suzie Quattro was huge here in the uk. I loved her music. I was shocked to hear in a documentary a few years ago, that as she got popular, her management told her that she'd got to appear more sexual.....zip undone nearly all the way down etc. She hated it, but she "had" to do it for her career.....which was obviously rubbish. I'm glad that she's still rockin', and doing her own thing nowadays.

People always talk about the Shark Jumping being the end of the good HappyDays but really season five is a bit of a recovery after the nonsense that was Season 4. The over Fonzied to the point of stupidity that season....Fonzies gets a dog, Fonzie gets baptized, Fonzie graduates highschool, Fonzie and Howie invent the garbage disposal....the show peaked in the first two seasons and took a nosedive in the 4th. The fact that a show that was that insanely popular never got past putting out the first 6 seasons on dvd really shows how the quality of the show went down hill.

Suzie moved to the uk where she’s lived now for years. She pops up on tv now and then. She’s hardly aged at all. Still looks damn good now as back then.

I remember that song from 1979, but I didn’t know, until this age of RU-vid, that Suzi was so popular around the world. I don’t think that any Americans under the age of 55 even know who she is. She’s like the American version of Kylie Minogue, who is so popular in every English speaking country except for America.

Yes, I believe that Suzi made the correct decision. She could see it coming from spinoffs to guest appearances on other shows and her music career going nowhere.

Leather Tuscadero was my first big influence as a female singer and Bassist. I was 8 years old when I first saw her on Happy Days. I was like "I wanna be like her!" I taught myself to sing and play Bass and drums.

I thought I watched alot of tv as a kid. But when I binge 2,3,4 of your vids and see all the other stuff you have stories about -DAMNNNN DAAAAVE! You are brilliant. Suzi Q is cemented in memory for me with Happy Days and her brilliant duet Stumblin In. (Love some other songs too but thats my fav) I always wondered what happened to her on Happy Days, THANK YOU and your Twitter buddy. Keep being awesome Dave!

Dave, Smokie was/is (they still occasionally tour Britain and the rest of the U.K.) a truly great band. You can hear a lot of their music on RU-vid. Look them up and give them a try; you will probably really like them. They had one U.S. hit single entitled "Living Next Door to Alice" which is usually credited to Dr. Hook, but it is by Smokie. Thank you again for the fun and informative videos. You still rock!

I love Suzi Q, but by the time she appeared, Happy Days was more like Mind Numbing Days. Like you, Dave, I've been re-watching the show in waves and really saw it change in feel and presentation after the second season, before Fonzie got magical powers and they went to that 3 camera setup, as most point out. But even as the show declined, there were still great episodes scattered throughout that were fun, and Suzi's were among them. She was so darned pretty too. I liked her more than Pinkie, for sure.

Seasons 3 and 4 were much better written and thereby entertaining than 1 & 2. Character driven humor vs boring 50s fad of the week . I'll take any Officer Kirk episode over Howdy Doody, Quiz Show, Johnny Fish & the Fins, Hamlet or Ike's election two years too late.

It seemed logical that Suzi wanted to concentrate more on her music career which is probably why she decided to leave the show. She probably considered herself a singer/musician first and an actress second. I remember very well her top 10 on the pop charts duet with Chris Norman, "Stumblin In." In 1979, I was 14 years old and that song was heard in heavy rotation on the radio. It is one of my favorite songs from that year. It's success was probably a contributing factor to her deciding to devote more of her time to her music career. With the Pinky character, it was so wildly popular but short-lived and you always wondered what might have been had she lasted. I don't feel the same way about Leather. Sure, a relationship with Ralph was possible but I think they got the most out of the character and there isn't as much of a wondering what might've been as was the case with Pinky.

In the United Kingdom she was bigger than her native United States, her biggest hits were Kahm McCann and devil gate Drive which barely dented the United States charts. In fact her only significant hit in the United States was the duet with Chris Norman, stumbling in

I always wanted to see the Tuscadero sisters together. And I think Leather and Ralph would have made a cute couple. But everybody has to do what’s best for that and it sounds like Suzi made the right choice. Kudos to her for not sticking with the practical “sure thing” and forging her own path.

I remember watching an episode where Richie got into a pretty horrific accident and was in a coma. Everyone gathered at Arnold’s and Leather performed a song dedicated to Richie. The last time I saw Susie Quattro was in an episode of Midsomer Murders called The Axman Cometh. I honestly didn’t have an opinion of Leather because she, like Pinky, were forces of nature that come around and leave. They don’t stay around for long. It is great that she is still rocking on.

Thanks for another great video, Mr. Sundstrom. But just imagine an alternate reality for HAPPY DAYS SEASON 10 wherein the series producers, rather than introducing cousins K.C. AND FLIP to replace JOANIE AND CHACHI due to their spinoff, they instead persuaded rocker SUZI QUATRO as LEATHER TUSCADERO and DANNY BUTCH as SPIKE FONZARELLI to reprise their earlier roles. SPIKE LOVES LEATHER ???

As always, great stuff. Dave. I'm trying to remember, wasn't she the character who sang a song for Richie while he was lying in the hospital, unconscious from a motorcycle accident? I remember the ep as a kid, and remembered that put a lump in my throat.

Great video, sir. But here's an interesting piece of trivia. SUZI QUATRO was going to star in a British TV series about BONNIE AND CLYDE with Oscar nominee JACK WILD who had portrayed The Artful Dodger in "Oliver". The project sadly did not materialize but she and Jack posed for costume fittings in some preproduction photos. What could have been.
