I disagree. More detail is needed to really judge such complexed issues. Ford has good technology and access to markets. Mazda can just take what fits the best, improved it and save on R&D costs. Now Ford lost access to the Japanese market. Many models available on the European market are a good fit for the Japanese market, so Ford and American manufacturing lost on that. The same story goes for South East Asia. Ford lost an important partner, which rises business costs.

@Chief Wahoo Nope! As Scotty pointed out before, SkyActiv engine got problems with its timing synch of VVT around 100,000 miles due to Mazda's evasion of VVT patents owned by Honda and Toyota while performing its VVT design for SkyActiv engine(a design flaw). The valves would collide with piston due to "mis-synch" and causing "explosion" to destroy the engine completely.

What about Daimler-Chrysler? So much worse. I personally see the Ford-Mazda partnership as having produced some of the best cars either company is capable of. The mid-00s Mazda 3 is their equivalent of Saab's 9-3, they took their friend's car and fixed it for them.

Back in 2001 my 1995 Mazda MX6 literally saved my life when an old lady ran a red light in a Buick sedan, going fast In the rain. I was T -boned on my driver door and launched into a pole! The car was destroyed but I survived with minimal injuries:) That car was build solid.

I bought a mazda Protege new in 1990. i had all kinds of cronic brake problems. They kept making a grinding noise. Every time I took it back they would replace the rotors. I finally had enough, I took it and traded it in on a 1991 Ford Explorer. I absolutely loved that car. I was in the military at the time a received orders to go to Turkey. There was no way I was going to take it with us so I sold it. I miss it to this day.

In 1977, my first car purchase was a 1974 Mazda RX-2, with a rotary engine. The car was 3 years old, but had 93k miles on it. I lived in hilly San Francisco at the time. That little Mazda got up and down the hills with ease, and never gave me a problem. So, just this past week, I test-drove a 2017 and a 2019 Mazda CX-5. I had been eyeing the Acura RDX, but wanted to compare it with the Mazda. In all, the Mazda CX-5 was a very nice car, fun to drive and that had lots of pep to it. The interior was surprisingly elegant too, with the stitched leather seats and console, and had a moon roof too. - In the end, I purchased the Acura RDX instead, only because I felt the Acura was more elegant than the Mazda, and had a V6 engine, which I really wanted. I would highly recommend test driving a Mazda before purchasing something else, as Mazda really has done a good job with their newer generation vehicles.

Thanks for this series on Mazda, Scotty! The company’s innovation was what intrigued me enough to purchase a Mazda RX-3 as my first new car in 1973. The MX-5 Miata is the only two seat roadster I was ever tempted to buy. I know they had a model called GLC, Great Little Car, but the RX-3, 626 and Miata that I had from that company were all GLCs. Really appreciate this history lesson!

They, too, had transmission problems, and traded it in within 6 months. Think we went through 4 or 5 transmissions most of which the dealership had to cover. Didn't get rid of it until my dad bought her a brand new Saturn for Christmas.
