FYI - I accidentally left off the Jeep Gladiator from the DougScoring at the end. I prefer the Gladiator over the Tacoma TRD Pro, and the Gladiator has a higher DougScore (24 + 33 = 57); I simply forgot about the Jeep when I was scoring the Tacoma.
sbeast1216 it doesn’t fit a wallet. It fits a credit card, but a wallet is bigger than a card, so no dice. And I’ve banged my leg on that switch cluster too many times 🤬
Also. This is because this (like the Wrangler and Gladiator) is designed to go off-road. Water fording is a must. Putting motors under the engine would lower the maximum water depth it could go through.
Pete OConnor adaptive cruise is my favorite tech feature I’ve had in any car in the last 10 years. Just got a Lexus with it and it’s seriously transformative on long boring highway drives
I can't imagine using manual seats. I adjust my seat quite often for city driving and more relaxed for highway cruising. Also, if I have a passenger, I don't have to explain how to adjust a seat. Btw my car is 17 years old and this feature works perfectly fine.
@@alexshkurin5213 , it's not about imagining... just use those marvelous results of evolution called HANDS. They are at the end of your arms and they contain fingers. Or, in the immortal words of Temperance Brennan, "PHA-LAAAAAN-GEEES!". Seriously, now, electrical devices break waaaay more often than manual/mechanical ones. Toyota engineers are not stupid, nor are they cheap. This is not a machine for "city driving and more relaxed highway cruising". It is a machine for bringing mountain roads to their knees.
Sadly one pays a lot of money for the tacoma, despite ALL the old style features; drum rear brakes, manual emergency brake, etc, etc. I don't get the love for these things. Especially for the asking prices. Sorru.
The Ford Ranger is similarly priced or slightly cheaper after dealer incentives for a truck that feels much less solid. And that’s new, resale values should tell you everything about the track records of midsize trucks.
Toyota is doing the right thing. Some things are better done the traditional way. I would rather have an old fashioned handbrake and gear lever. Sometimes auto makers seem to forget they are building a car, not a space ship
@@Bck2004 Yeah, it's just a joke.. It is a shame that we don't get the diesel Hilux here I had one went I lived abroad.. Not a single issue just fuel and oil changes..
Lol a handbrake lever is very new tech for Tacoma. That is why I love that truck. Waiting for the newer 2020 to depreciate by a couple hundred after 5 years.
I hate the pull lever design. That's probably my biggest qualm with older Toyota trucks. They tend to need regular lubing and adjustment to keep the light from triggering and rust belt trucks always seize up at the adjustment points underneath.
I knew there was a reason I always liked the Tacoma, and now I really want one. I hate that manufacturers are going away from physical shift knobs/levers and opting for buttons instead. Pushing a button to shift into gear just feels wrong.
All cars with Aisin transmissions have this function, but Toyota actually gives you the button. It just decreases the throttle required to downshift, and holds lower gears for longer. 0-60 should be unchanged, but passing acceleration will be improved.
The parking brake is brilliant. Screw these new "buttons", the simplicity of this manual parking brake is preferred by most folks. I agree w you Doug, the new "button" feels like a gimmick
This is a 2019 Doug Demuro and he’s the best version of everyone’s favorite midsized Doug Demuros. I say that because even as new midsized Doug Demuros come out, this Doug seems to be the gold standard. The one that all of the other midsized Doug Demuros are compared against. Today, I’m going to review this Doug Demuro and find out why.
I do that as well. I find that cleans the grime off the wipers and helps to "scrub" off baked on bug guts. Just don't do it with car washes that aren't touch free.
Power seats are not needed if you are the only driver. I had a old model truck with power seats and dealer wanted $1000 for a new power seat motor. Set the seat once and forget it.
It depends if your too tall or short for the position. That’s why the up and down and power seats are a benefit but I’ve never had a problem and always thought it was comfortable.
The craziest thing is all new Tacoma’s have that GoPro mount. My girlfriend has the base model (white with black plastic bumpers) and it still has the GoPro mount
I second that! My dad has a few late 80’s/early 90’s Toyota trucks. Loved learning how to drive a manual transmission in those. So easy to work on too.
@Andrew Smith really. cause my grandfather has one he bought brand new and all he had to do was maintainance and clutch replacements. I learned to drive stick off it and I love it so much.
@Andrew Smith sorry to inform you, but you bought a bunch of badly maintained cars, and you obviously can't repair them on your own. They are amazing trucks and will def run for ever if you aren't inept with vehicle repairs.
@@Certifxed.Don23 I get that, but what if he reviewed some ultra slow car that did 0-60 in 15 secs? It would be kinda stupid to give that car the same score as this Tacoma
Magnus Likes Tanks well he did this so a car that would do a 5 sec 0-60 wouldn’t score the same as one that did it in 4.5. He made the ranges closer together. But then again nobody scoring is perfect. Fair point.
@@Michael-jq5pf what was that Honda Element commercial or something from 10 years ago that boasted a record-breaking 11 cup holders?.. I remember I think seeing it in between episodes of Heroes.
I don't understand the rant about manually operated seats. How often do you move your seat, that you would need to pay extra $$$ for an electric setup?
And in a vehicle that will last 300k+ miles, I see manual seats as a bonus. No useless power options = no useless power option repair costs. Adjust your own seat you whiny so-and-so’s.
Manual seats are way better than electric seats. You can dial in your correct setting in about 5 seconds. With electric seats you need so sit there for 15 seconds just to fix one setting...
I love the manual seats, that’s one less thing to go out. What I don’t like is it doesn’t have height adjustment. My wrangler jk had manual seats with a manual height adjustment lever. I do wish my Tacoma had that. But as far as electric seat go, they can keep those, that’s why I didn’t get the tech package.
And it explains the manual parking brake: if you have ever tried to get going on a steep incline pulling a heavy load: you have to play with the clutch and the parking brake. An automatic brake just doesn't work very well with a manual in that situation.
@@erikv5382 exactly manual and auto parking brake are a big no. Even worse at least in my volkswagen you have to be on a normal brake with a foot or else it won't let you put down a parking brake. So you can't do anything with gas and clutch pedal before you release the parking brake I can't believe they actually produce them like that...
I love manual handbrakes, i love reliable cars, i haven't moved my seat in my current car for over 4 years. Yep Toyota know how to focus on what matters
Totally agree, kinda annoys me when Doug complains about not having power seats because its almost always just one person who drives it. Lol the power seats in my Pilot shorted out and the seats been fixed in place for years with no problem
Keeping the hand brake is crucial. If you are 4wheeling and have to stop on a steep hill for whatever reason, you pull the hand brake to keep the car from rolling backwards. You apply gas while the brake is still engaged and then release the brake as you apply more gas. This stops the car from rolling backwards and giving you backwards momentum that would cause the wheels spin.
Hilux FTW, they wont go with a gasaoline engine, probably because old diesels can run on vegetable and probably olive oil and they're much more capable of carrying more dead bodies
I'm the primary driver of Tacoma, once you have your seats set. There really is no reason to adjust them, so power seats are really an over kill, plus with a manual seat there is more room to hide more junk under your seats.
This is one of the best thought out vehicles on the market today. Everything that often goes wrong was left mechanical and old-fashioned to be as indestructible as possible. Peppered with modern tech only where necessary.
@@melias67 where I'm from In Australia, most medium pickups similar to the Tacoma have 4 cylinder diesels. 0-100km/h in 11+ seconds. Ford/Mazda 5 cylinder diesel about 10.5 seconds. VW, Mercedes 6 cylinder diesel 7-8 seconds. So this Tacoma is up the quicker end of the mid size pickups.
@@melias67 They're the best they have ever been. No doubt about it. My main point in my original comment was if Doug rates a 7. point whatever 0 to 60mph time as a 1/10 I'd like to see his thoughts on the other 80% of cars on the road which would dream of a sub 8 second sprint.
@@bboymonk3y No, I realized for the money you have to spend on it, both new and used, your not getting a lot of car. I mean yeah they keep their value, but the used prices were ridiciouls and I already have a jeep wrangler. I ended up buying a used luxury car instead and I get better gas milage, better technology, and no problems. Insurance is also cheaper for some reason
I completely don’t understand this hype around power seats: how often you adjust them? You set them and forget. Especially when you are the only driver. Then compare it to cruise control or even adaptive cruise control - most probably you use it almost constantly in daily basis.
I have a 2019 tundra and have only used the adaptive cruise control once to try it out. If you can put the phone down for a bit, it's a waste of money.
@@nightstalker824 Not one bit. It's worth every penny. If you're driving anywhere outside your normal route it's an absolute dream feature. Having driven across the country a few times both with and without it, there's absolutely no comparison.
Comparing this *really* cool to a *really* cool Ferrari or any of the supercars he drives regularly, it makes sense. People would complain if he just gave everything perfect scores 😂
Its actually one of the smallest trucks you can get in America. The Ford Ranger and the Chevy Colorado are also "midsize" but again the smallest trucks you can get. The Tacoma is smaller than an F150 which is the smallest F-series truck that Ford makes, then it goes to F250 and F350 and even dually. So yeah... its considered a small truck in the USA since we don't get any actual small trucks.

This truck is tiny compared to a Ram or F150 or tundra
@@zoeyredmond5501 actually according to Auto remarketing, it is #2 Here’s a link to their article: www.autoremarketing.com/trends/study-vehicles-lowest-depreciation-rates And according to Forbes, it is number 3: www.forbes.com/sites/jimgorzelany/2019/11/07/burning-money-vehicles-that-depreciate-the-fastest-and-those-that-hold-onto-their-values-best/?sh=3293c12e5f4a
You missed a cool detail at 13:49 There are two little notches cut into the sides of the bed (one above the plug, and one above the wheel well). That's because, unlike a full-size pickup, the Tacoma is too narrow for a 4' wide sheet of plywood to lie flat between the wheels; but those notches are designed to hold a 2x8 sideways across the bed, which gives you an elevated platform above the wheel wells to store your plywood! www.tacomaworld.com/gallery/data/500/medium/HPIM0093.JPG
have you ever heard of grandma can't be bothered to do all that so she tries to force it all into our Honda Accord and ends up ripping the seats and busting a window?
Raptor gets 18mpg, TRD Pro Tacoma 6-spd gets 20mpg. Everyone thinks the Tacoma is so efficient, but it's never been good on gas. Even the 4-cylinder 4x4 tacomas chug gas like there's no tomorrow. This is coming from someone who has owned two tacomas and a 4runner.
Those parking brakes are the reason it’s the most reliable, same with the seats. Plus it’s a truck. I mean, soon enough people will probably be complaining, “ huhhhhhh have to step into my vehicle”
Honestly, I adjust my seats maybe twice a year. I don't mind those rare occasions where I do adjust my seat being slightly less convenient than they could be.
So true. Just last month a busted parking brake motor left me stranded in the middle of the night on a highway services area a good 1000km from home. A regular one would receive several well-placed hits with a hammer and I'd be free to go, but noooo, it had to be electric (that means it's better).
Tacoma is getting a power seat for 2020 model year. Power seats are just more adjustable and easier to adjust in smaller increments. The other benefit is memory seating so once you find the one position you like you can save it. So when someone else drives you can quickly go back to your own position.
Fine adjustments with electric and I can do it safely while driving if my back or knees start to bug me. Also 42k you better bet I want it. So will hold out until 2020 and order a green one with a manual. Plus the better head lights
The "unnamed" Tacoma way back when was actually the Hilux- sales of the Hilux in the United States ceased in 1995 and was replaced with the Tacoma, though, both shared similar characteristics. I believe the Tacoma lacked a more complete boxed frame compared to the Hilux; the Tacoma having utilized a combination of a boxed frame in some areas and reinforced c-frame in others.
Unfortunately not many people can afford or want to pay $45+ thousand for a midsize truck and this is coming from a Tacoma fanboy. The TRD off road or TRD sport is most people’s best bet
I can’t believe dealers are adding 5k over the already high 47,000 sticker. All said and done you’re at 56/57 out the door . (.my work buddies who drive Super Duties and Duramax paid 70-80k for their big rigs)
Doug the type of guy to suggest a supercharger or V8 for the Taco while completely ignoring Toyota's own 416hp 3.5L twin turbo V6 that's already being sold.
I stg, Doug, if they put an electronic parking brake and shifter in the next taco because of you I will be very cross. 😂 tell them to add rear disc brakes !

A perfect mix if you ask me. Who cares if the adaptive cruise control breaks in the menu? You don't buy the Tacoma for it anyway. Power seats break or the automatic handbrake? Yeah, that gets annoying to the people who buy the Tacoma. This is exactly the type of mixture I'd prefer in all my vehicles.
