@@spaceweasel not in a long range engagement the F-35 has superior heads up and data sensors and with stealth it can kill before being seen. an F-15 by contrast has such a large radar cross section it is literally bigger than the plane it's self and it wants to be seen but with modern SAM and BVR missiles that's not a great thing to have.

The F35 was designed as the Universal (fighter) bomber good for the Air Force, Navy and Marine Corp. The Marines needed a stól aircraft so Lockheed put a giant fan facing down behind the cockpit. The Áir Force and Navy did not and that was deleated but not the fuselage that housed it and because of a little thing called the area rule the plane cannot exceed 1.4 pushing that barrel sized fuselage. But thats okay it is only supposed to be a (fighter) bomber anyway and the F22 was supposed to do the air superiority thing. Except the f22 got cancelled at less than 200 built. But that is okay because the f35 was a more lucrative program for the subcontractors and politicians anyway. A couple years ago, Portland ANG scrambled a pair of F15s for an emergency up in Seattle .. and they got there in 7 minutes. There are a bunch of Top Gun graduates in the local air guard.

It's true. Alert missions do not require stealth for intercepting. The f16 was perfect for that role. The f35 placement on ANG was a political move, and I can assure you guardsmen hate it.

Yeah I think it is important to keep all those trained workers with experience intact. I spent my first 45 years in St. Louis, friends, relatives and neighbors worked there building the F15 and F18.

think you will find they have built all the F-35s for Australia. The is very little to gain in Australia to buy into F-15 at this point and the eye is on the next thing that will replace our F/A-18F (and probably Growlers)

you know the F-35 can look right back at you and from a longer distance and with the relative levels of observability I am pretty confident the F-35 will see the F-15 well before the F-15 even knows the F-35 is near. The F-117 was for all purposes 'blind' in any meaningful way

@@misspuddles63 I’m talking about f-15s armed with IRST pods going against enemy “5th gen aircraft” not f35’s. They have been using the 117’s to test and refine stealth detection for 4th gen aircraft.

By all reports the Russian and Chinese aircraft that may be faced are perhaps not of the same calibre of low observability, but I still guarantee that will be smaller than the tennis court of the F-15 and those aircraft also can stare back

@@miketurner2945 You couldn’t be more wrong if you tried. The F-35 is vastly more capable than the F-15EX, cheaper to buy and much cheaper to operate.

So I've heard F-15EX it's a stop gap between F-22 and NGAD. We can't afford F-22s in great numbers. Or to resurect the program. But even if NGAD comes along or we got more F-22s (Not happening.) why wouldn't you want F-15s? It generates more sorties then stealth aircraft and has a big payload.

@@jg3000 Don't count on it. NOTHING that has recently come from the DOD lately has been worth much. As in not sabotaged in some ways. Any way defense contractors have a big problem today. Aerodynamics don't change. Thr human bodies abilitie to handle high G maneuvers also doesn't change. Engine technology, electronics and computer processing power has changed. We can, and have built more maneuverable fighters. Trouble is, that they like the F-16, are likely to render the pilot unconscious. The F-16 in particular, is notorious for killing pilots that way. So? There really is no great reason to build an all new airframe. New engines, radars, computers and electronics. Fittings for the latest missiles? Then you have a modern fighting aircraft. For defense contractors who want to sell a new product? That's a BIG problem! That's where this generation BS, is coming from. Stealth technology is very expensive. Too expensive for so many aircraft. Stealth is also like most other forms of ECM. It gets outmoded quickly. As effective countermeasures become available. So? The F-22 is out of production, on it's way into the history books. Probably not nearly as good as it's reputation suggests. Or, it's so good, foriegn agents made certain that it wouldn't be a real factor in any future war. One of those things is true. As for the nebulous future fighter? We will see if it ever materializes.

@@scottjackson5173you have a very good point in that the airframe and the human is now starting to become the constraint of today’s modern fighter aircraft’s and the solution in the not to far future is going to be fighter drones. That can operate in a hive mind, multiple of them working together to complete a mission with only a human in the loop for the final approval process to go ahead with the attack or not.

@@luffirton flying murder robots. So long aa they are remotely controlled drones. Make a nice force multiplier. AI control is a very different matter. Very opposed to self motivated killing machines. There are just too many ways that can go very wrong. Anyway Iran recently demonstrated the problems of remote controlled drones. When they proudly displayed a top secret stealth drone. One they hacked and took over in their airspace. Electronics warfare is no joke, it was my specialty. The last thing anyone needs is AI drones going rogue and murdering innocent people. There are some who would love to exploit the possibility to commit murder/suicide.

@@hreason I was referring to the comparison between the F-14 and the F-18. But from what I see online the Super Hornet is now the better plane. Especially after they equip it with the long range SM-6 missile.

when you say "F35 and other aircraft light up the targets to soften enemy air defense" you mean destroy. Once air defences is destroyed the F-35 can continue to bring the hate with externally mounted ordnance
