/* ---- VIDEO INFORMATION ---- */
So Hereditary is one of those movies that blew me away when I first watched it back in 2018.
It's by far my favourite Ari Aster film and though I've already done a big breakdown on it I thought that I'd revisit the movie to celebrate the release of Beau Is Afraid. You see back when I made that first video on it in 2020 I was still learning the ropes and since then we've bought new equipment, hired editors and just tried to up our game in terms of the level that we pick movies apart.
I've never been that happy with the video because of how much I missed in that initial watch through and thus I've decided to return once more to the classic to unearth all of the hidden things within it. Throughout this video we'll be going through every little creepy detail, it's ending and also why I love the movie so much.

I found it a bit weird that people mentioned how the actress amazingly portrayed the grief of losing her daughter... I didn't think it was special at all, until it hit me. Western people like from Europe and the Americas usually tend to treat loses as graciously and conservatively as possible in terms of manners and reaction, etc... While i, as an arab, have already seen this type of reactions quite some times in my life, and i think this is just a cultural difference that made certain people feel the eeriness of the movie more than others, since as i said before, if you are from an arab country, most likely you will see the actress's grief in real life (and it is disturbing hearing a father screaming through an entire appartement block in grief for losing his young daughter to cancer or hearing 4 old women crying and screaming due to the loss of their sister to a heart attack... it really unsettled the mood in our house when it happend).

Also, as the narrator pointed out the hats on the wall, relating them to the three decapitated heads that Paimon carries, you’ll notice that after Charlie loses her head and her funeral is over, there are only TWO remaining hats on the wall, and the one that was orange (like Charlie’s sweatshirt) is no longer there, her head having been “collected” by Paimon. The other two heads will be that of the grandmother, once her corpse has been dug up and mutilated, and Annie, who severs her own head later while possessed.

He wasn't possessed by Charlie, Charlie was possessed by Paimon and that's why she clicked. It's Paimon's tick. Charlie's grandmother had Charlie possessed as a young child, because she was vulnerable (because of her age) and by that time Peter was too emotionally developed to be easily possessed. But Paimon needed a male host, because he's not able to fully possess a female host (as we can see because sometimes Charlie's own, albeit very underdeveloped, personality shone through) so Peter had to be emotionally broken down to the point where he was vulnerable for possession. He had to lose his entire family, in a short period of time. The whole cult that their grandmother was in, was there to bring a vessel for Paimon, because Paimon was giving them wealth and prosperity in exchange for a host. Love your videos by the way!! I find it amazing that you're always able to somehow condense the entire premise of a two hour long movie into less than a half hour without really leaving any major details out. it's a talent for sure!! I've seen all of your videos and anxiously await new uploads

I think the model house scenes also show how Annie is detached from her home life. She can't understand it from within and maybe feels powerless to control anything, so she creates these models where things make sense and she can give an order to the chaos. or shes just a fucking artist lmao?
@tly3
@tly3 26 дней назад
@@jakewhite4192 NOTHING in this film is accidental or coincidental. It's all very carefully orchestrated. Annie is not "just an artist." She became an artist as a way to express the confusion, frustration, loneliness, and agitation she felt about the strange happenings in her life since her childhood. Annie thinks that the entire family, including herself, are mentally ill, and the audience thinks that's what "Hereditary" refers to. But none of them are actually mentally ill. "Hereditary" refers to the curse of her family line that her mother perpetrated upon them by becoming spiritually married to the demon Paimon. The mother has been trying to bring Paimon into an earthly plane since Annie was a child. First she tried to use her earthly husband (Annie's father) as a vessel, but he got wise to her scheme and locked himself away, finally starving himself to death to escape her evil clutches. Annie read this behavior as mental illness, but it was not his imagination, it was actually happening. Then Annie tells her therapy group that her brother had paranoid delusions that their mother was trying to "put people inside him" and it drove him to suicide. But he wasn't paranoid, that was actually happening. Charlie wasn't mentally ill or autistic, she was possessed by Paimon from the time of her birth, so every strange behavior that she has is actually Paimon. Annie says she feels blamed for everything that goes wrong in their family. That's because her mother resented her for not being a boy (and therefore not a potential vessel for Paimon), and then harassed her into having kids (as potential vessels for Paimon). Her mother guilted her for not "letting her get her hooks into Peter," and then basically forced Annie to allow her to name Charlie (a male name) and take over her care so she could bottle feed Charlie the conjuring herbs that allowed Paimon to possess her. The reason Grandma wanted to breastfeed the baby herself is because she had turned the baby into Paimon, her demon husband, and the breastfeeding was a way for her to be intimate with him. Annie saw all this from an outsider's perspective as being twisted and perverse. Then Annie's mother became terminally ill, and she subconsciously blamed Annie for taking too long to get pregnant, so she ended up elderly and dying before she could finish the ritual of bringing Paimon back to an earthly form. The catch to all of this is that Annie never understood the plot, so she has no idea why any of this is happening. That's why she reads it as mental illness and feels that she's being blamed. All of these feelings are played out in her art via these dioramas. Hope that helps you to understand!

I've never seen anyone mention this before, and I only noticed it tonight on my 4th rewatch... When the accident happens, it's caused by a deer carcass laying in the road, and Peter serves to miss it, which is how Charlie hits her head on the pole at the side of the road. After Peter has stopped the car in the middle of the road, he can't bring himself to look into the backseat, but his gaze goes from the review mirror to the road... Out in the distance, you can barely see naked people running, illuminated by the headlights. So they obviously planted the deer carcass in the road. There are other times when you can see their naked bodies scattered all over the woods outside the house. You can sometimes see them outside a window. They are performing little creepy tasks throughout the entire movie!

A family being slowly ripped apart one person at a time by forces beyond one’s control. All the demons of the families past come down on the last remaining son and the resignation and hopelessness laid bare on Alex Wolff’s face at the end makes me feel sick to my stomach. The idea that hope (of family) can indeed die, nothing is certain and you may be left with nothing upon reaching adulthood… nothing left of yourself but an empty vessel, devoid of what used to be or could have been. What I loved about Hereditary was that it wasn’t your typical horror movie w/the obvious cat & mouse scenario of the victim trying to escape & survive from what ever bad is after them. It stands out mainly because the director doesn’t spoon feed us what’s going on but instead puts us into the shoes of the actor in a POV kind of way to where we experience the same horror when the characters do. Instead of knowing before hand what the characters don’t know, we get to feel as if we’re in the movie by discovering clues & go into this journey just as blind with them. it’s like your on the same journey with the protagonist not knowing exactly what is after them or what’s going to happen until it’s finally revealed which was such an effective way Ari Aster decided to present this film. That’s what made Hereditary more frightening in the way the story was told to us. Ari really does try to avoid using the same horror tropes Hollywood follows with the unnecessary repetitive jump scares that serve no purpose that a sudden shock. The Jump scares in Hereditary were effective because they were used at the correct moments and also served other purposes beyond just a cheap quick shock. I personally was terrified with how they amplified normal sounds or background noise to where it creates an uncomfortable unnerving reaction as your watching the scene play out like when Anne bangs her head repeatedly at the attic door chasing peter omg I could go on

We know the pole has the sigil on it, but is that a predetermined thing, or was Paimon like "okay, so in a week we're gonna go to a party that is going to have brownies with nuts in it, so put my sigil on this light pole." The girl who made the brownies could also be a part of the cult as well. This is why Hereditary is one of the best movies in the past decade or so. There's so much to discuss and more to find out

@@neonicon8500The beheading was definitely planned.

0:49 The reason for that name isn't necessarily aesthetic, although I'm sure that played a part. In older forms of English they used a character from the futhorc alphabet which was called Wynn, but those characters were phased out in favor of Latin characters. Since Latin didn't natively have a character for the W sound, they began using VV or UU for it, which eventually became the "Double U" or "Double V" in some other regions (namely France).

I love all of Ari Aster's work, but as someone who has a really complicated family life, Hereditary has always really stood out to me. You mention the mental illness theory briefly, but my personal favorite interpretation is a sort of combination of both the "supernatural" elements and mental illness aspects, where perhaps there really IS a cult, and they're still manipulating things behind the scenes, but it's not actually accomplishing anything. We see that the cult clearly has a strong establishment in the town and there's the large counseling session Annie goes to, so I think that perhaps most of the town is dealing with their own hereditary issues, leading them to come together with belief that they can revive Paimon and create a happier life for themselves. Perhaps through the usage of the weird drug we see in the movie and their own denial, they convince themselves that the spiritual happenings we see are real, the demon and inheritance of it are real to them, and thus it's shown as real to the viewer.
@Hawk7886
@Hawk7886 Год назад
I think you're overthinking it, dude. It's more fun to take it at face value: The mom wound up going off the deep end, but the cult was very real, and they would up accomplishing the mission. I wonder what the end result would've been. Does Paimon actually have any power that he can wield? What are the cult's next moves? It's said that Paimon possessed an immense amount of knowledge, far beyond the current state of humanity, and could generate wealth on command. The cult could've been set to make a run for power, or Paimon could've just killed them all and set himself loose.
@michibiki6798
@michibiki6798 Год назад
@@Hawk7886 That's fair enough for you, but I don't really like supernatural stories as much and prefer to think that the stories about the demon are really just that, stories, and he doesn't really exist and can't really do anything in the first place. It adds an additional layer of tragedy to the movie for me and makes it far more interesting to think that they made all these sacrifices and plans only for them to result in absolutely nothing gained on their end. So much of the narrative of the movie focused on the personal connections and drama that, while he did serve as a good driving force of the conflicts and motivator, Paimon doesn't need to actually be real for anything in the movie to have actually happened, and the humans are far scarier on their own anyways.
@Hawk7886
@Hawk7886 Год назад
@@michibiki6798 I mean, sure, but why watch a supernatural movie featuring demons and possessions and then discount the climax featuring the demon possessing a host? The movie was already pretty damn tragic. It's like watching The Exorcist and saying, "Yeah that's cool but I feel like the girl was just schizophrenic and her mom was probably drugging her. She didn't really float above the bed, the priest was just drunk."
@michibiki6798
@michibiki6798 Год назад
@@Hawk7886 Man if you don't like the theory or interpretation you don't have to believe it LOL. Clearly we have different tastes and that's okay. I find it personally more interesting because whether or not the supernatural elements are real doesn't change most of the story since it's mostly centered on people's conflicts and actions with each other, so I think it's more interesting if they aren't, and the people in the movie are mistaken. Also, the exorcist is a really out there comparison especially since they address that kind of theory in the movie and books and disprove them in the story. The conflict between skepticism and faith plays a role in the conflict of the Exorcist, where it doesn't really in Hereditary.
