Hereford Cathedral often doesn't get on the itineraries of travelers but it has a lot to offer the visitor.
We take a look inside and some of its amazing treasures including a font that is almost 1000 years old, a chained library and the world-famous 'Mappa Mundi'.

The Chained Library is the largest collection of chained books in the World, not just the UK. Two treasures you missed were the oldest illuminated manuscript in the collection The Hereford Gospels from the 8th Century and I can't believe you missed this out, a Magna Carta from 1217 and the finest one out of the 4 surviving examples from that date, the Cathedral also holds the only surviving copy of "The Kings Writ" a letter that was sent out with the Magna Carta by the King requiring the terms of the charter and how to broadcast it, in other words a type of instruction manual.

That it because neither the Hereford Gospels or Magna Carta were there when I visited. The Magna Carta is indeed the 1217 version, reissued as a Royal charter and in Henry III's name however, you mention there 4 surviving examples which makes me think you are referring to the 1215 charter, of which only 4 survive and the best of these is at Salisbury Cathedral.

@@BritishHistory Your title just said "Hereford Cathedral and it's Treasures" so I assumed you meant it was a vid on the treasures, not just the ones you saw when you were there....There are only 4 remaining original 1217 Magna Carta's and Hereford's version is the only one with a surviving example of the "Kings Writ". Recently it's been on it's travels, 3 trips abroad in 7 years (Up until 2021 and Covid) meaning it had only left Hereford 5x in 8 Centuries, the 5 being, put into safety at Aberystwyth in WWII, loaned to Houston's Museum of Natural Science in 2014, A world tour in 2015 marking the 800th anniversary of the Magna Carta, in 2019, it was exhibited for three months in Vercelli, Italy, for the 800th-anniversary celebrations of the Basilica di Sant’ Andrea, founded by the papal legate who sealed Hereford’s copy and recently in 2021 it was sent back across the Atlantic to Washington DC for a 6 month exhibition which ended in January 2022, which is probably why it might not have been on display in the Cathedral when you visited.

Are there PDF versions of the books? I'd hate to think of a fire or something else damaging or destroying the collection.

@@nathanaelstunt7317 The books are now it their own specially deigned environmentally controlled building, they're protected just as well as any priceless works of art, the building was built alongside the Cathedral and opened by the Queen in 1996, it's also built in the same style using the same stone as the Cathedral so it fits into the area. Also other books were brought in from another chained library at All Saints Church, which is just a 2 minute walk up the road from the Cathedral, it was the first time that all the books have been back together and in order since the mid 1800s...The books (and other treasures) are highly protected in that building, so pretty safe, as for copies, I've checked the Cathedral web page and it doesn't really say, but I would expect all the books have been scanned and archived...Just in case.

@@David-bw7is - Just a "possibly", no certainty. Nevermind, I'm not planning on starting afresh anyway.
