Milan, in the early morning of Friday, June 21st, 1630, a man called Guglielmo Piazza, of humble birth but with the office of public Health Commissioner, was walked along a street called Vetra dei Cittadini, today Via Gian Giacomo Mora. As required by his office, he was recording on a piece of paper the houses that have been abandoned. It rained, therefore he walked close to the walls, almost touching them with his hand.
In those months, Milan was ravaged by the plague, carried into the region by the landsknechts. All the measures taken to contain the epidemics had been ineffective.
The citizens of Milan were exhausted and many of them had fallen prey of paranoid beliefs. It also seems that some people had started to smear the walls and doors of houses with sticky and foul-smelling substances, in order to increase the panic and loot more easily.
These is the background of the extraordinary and horrible events occurred in Milano from late June to early August of the year 1630, which have been investigated in Alessandro Manzoni famous essay “The History of the Column of Infamy”. This video will guide you through the sites, where those events occurred and will show you what has been left of them.
