Hi. My parents used to have a summer home near the Herkimer diamond mines. My husband mined quite a few of them. It was interesting to learn about them from you. As a woman who loves handmade jewelry I plan to look at your work.

I had no idea this beautiful stone had a connection to the Mohawk people. I have a small 20mm herkimer, and it's my favorite stone out of my entire little collection. I carry it with me. It even made it into my novel. At first I'd thought it was a very beautiful, unique, ancient stone that held a little of the Earth in it, but now that I know the meaning it holds to the Mohawk people, and hearing about how the double termination represents duality, it makes even more sense now that this stone represents the twins in my story. Thank you for sharing this. :)

I live n Canajoharie NY ( The Pot That Washes Itself) area and my brother and sister in law in Herkimer. I love Herkimer Diamonds Your explanation is exceptional and enjoyed listening very much. Learned much more. Thank you! I wonder if Jesse would be a descendent of Joseph Brant the Chief of Mohawk Valley and his sister who was a commoner wife of Gen. Johnson by the years they live together and fact they had several children. She may well be , of course. Many of us are related in this area more than we know until we research our ancestor.

Double terminated quartz found in Arkansas is called "Arkimer Diamonds" and Pakistan double terminated quartz is called "Pakimer Diamonds." A bit of semantics, but not mentioning the originating locality is otherwise a bit misleading. Herkimer Diamonds are found only in one place in the world and that's in Herkimer County, New York. The Mohawk Valley consists of many counties so it would be more appropriate to say that they are "Mohawk Diamonds" (unless they're from Herkimer County).

Thanks for the price references; I'm looking to make an engagement ring for my lady. I intend on gathering some stones and getting them cut so I can set into the ring. I don't really wanna do the traditional diamond deal as I'd rather not support diamonds; furthermore, I'm of Mohawk descent and was raised in the Catskills - so for me, Herkimer Diamonds are both a piece of my geneology as well as a piece of my upbringing. If I'm going to give my heart, my thought was that I should represent that with a piece of me. Do you have any suggestions for cuts for rings? Are there any particular cuts that work better than others for this particular gem?
