Since you still have a lot of long-standing members currently playing, maybe the next video series (or something within this series) would be an edited round-table discussion of other Hermit's experiences as they joined the HC server and played their first season or two. JoeHills, Etho, Doc, Cleo, Mumbo, Hypno, etc. How they got invited, what they felt like when they started, if they ever thought of leaving, how they feel about old members leaving the server (or new members joining), how their approach to each season changes. I think it would be neat to hear more voices.

I remember finding Mindcrack when Etho joined in December 2011, not long after the official release of 1.0. I was 17 at the time, and I loved watching the Mindcrackers' escapades. They really did set the standard for an unmodded SMP Minecraft community. It's a shame to see how far they've fallen from the limelight, but as you said X, they were the ones to chart new ground and so had the most risk - and IMO they also just didn't handle the sharp decline in Minecraft's popularity it experienced in 2014 very well. Still, I'm thankful for the memories I have of them - Zisteau was my favorite through the absurd scope of his builds (which are tiny by today's standards!) and the insanity of his pranks. Good times.

Even just a few days ago I caught myself humming "Two Baj's" after I heard Bdubs sing something else. Between that and watching some old Zisteau LPs, it's had the nostalgia kicking in well, and this is a nice cap on that wave I feel.

"Content creators shying away from multiplayer" is a relatable mood. I've wanted to play SMP and even pitched the idea of a server to my group of Hetalia roleplaying friends on FB (not necessarily for recording, just to have fun on and rp as Hetalia characters playing Minecraft... it's _almost_ "Empires but with extra steps" 🤔), but nothing came of the idea due to incompatible schedules, some people only being able to play bedrock edition, etc... plus it's really hard to be a multiplayer content creator when you have no control over your own availability and can only "record and edit when you luck into having time to yourself" (which also locks me out of being a streamer, since streams live and die by consistent scheduling). This entire series has been enlightening, and it's nice to get a peek behind the curtain at stuff like this!

Yes, it's hard. Some of the things that got Mindcrack going was that Guude had (has?) money. He apparently used to have some sort of business that he sold, and so he wasn't nearly as dependent on ad income, and he had more time to make and edit videos. He could even try things like the PlayMindcrack server (which was very fun, but not profitable!).

I have nothing but adoration in how you run Hermitcraft without pushing for “All the Control” you run a very entertaining server of a lot of very talented people in a way that is clearly and evenly decided by the group. Good going Xisuma!!

Those early Mindcrack and Hermitcraft videos were what first piqued my interest in Minecraft. ^_^ Then a friend of mine started a server... I think was on 1.5, as he was all into redstone. Then horses were added in 1.6, and that became my obsession haha! I think it was BDubs or Etho who made a video about how to build a racetrack to measure your horse's speed, and that got me hooked! Unfortunately, that's also when my friend decided that it was more fun to mess with people than to mess with redstone... and when he burned down everything I had spent the last year building, I gave up on Minecraft for a bit. I started a singleplayer world a year or two later tho, and have been a big fan of singleplayer Minecraft ever since. Tried public multiplayer servers a few times here and there, got ganked and griefed a lot, didn't bother going back, and just have no real interest in trying multiplayer SMPs anymore. What you guys have with Hermitcraft and Empires -- the trust, respect, cooperative spirit, and general sense of community -- is a truly wonderful experience that a public server will never be able to replicate :( But I still really enjoy the game and watching all those Hermitcraft, Empires, Afterlife and Legacy videos -- they've kept me interested in playing, even after all these years ^_^

A good recap of it all. Its interesting to watch it put together on the timeline having watched Mindcrack's height, decline (video and legal and all) and the shift to Hermitcraft - as I followed the content creators. I really enjoy Hermitcraft content, it's always fun to sit down and see the shenanigans, builds, and increased RP of the server/players these days after work

This almost made me cry lol great time. I remember Nebris saying he cheating in one of the contests to become a member. He would also have all the best gear in like the first few episodes. he was then called cheaty Nebris. UHC was something I always looked forward to and all the legendary moments. If I could have Nebris, Arkis and AnderZel join a server that would be a dream. All three are amazing builders and some of my favorite Mindcrackers Another favorite moment is when bdubs build the mindcrack logo and everyone called it a potato on a stick lol i know he didnt like that, cuz he take pride in his builds but i would be funny for someone aka a hermin to bring it up and see what he says, sorry bdubs lol

I'm getting so much goosebumps from this. Most of these content creators have been there since I was a teen (I'm 27 now) and started watching in the early Mindcrack days. Forever grateful for all those people, especially in recent times where I have been struggling with a strong depression. My favourite Hermits always made their upload days "liveable" for me While there are and were many amazing memories, I think the B-Team is one of my favourite. I also really enjoyed discovering Grian when he joined. Feels like he brought a lot to the entire server and other Hermits

I guess that _kind of_ goes some way to explaining how Generikb went from founder of the server to persona non grata, just up and leaving the group with nobody in charge, but there's got to be more to that story. Seeing all those old Mindcrack clips brought back a lot of memories. I was one of the Mindcrack fans from way back, watching from the first multiplayer season, and you're right, it really did show how Minecraft _could_ be played, but wasn't. It made people want to play with their friends in more cooperative worlds. It literally founded a genre of video-making and of gameplay in general. I think it's fair to say that Mindcrack was responsible for Minecraft not being a flash-in-the-pan sensation that disappeared overnight, because it really did seem like Mindcrack _was_ Minecraft for two or three years there. Most of us had gotten bored with our 2010 purchases by 2012, and Mindcrack was the life support system fueling interest in the game. That role has passed to Hermitcraft fully, by now. Minecraft, as enjoyable a game as it is, really has no reason to have stuck around for, if you count the Alpha releases, thirteen years now. It certainly wouldn't have without the RU-vidrs keeping the interest high. The legal issues that killed Mindcrack are our gain, though, because Hermitcraft has risen up with a much more wholesome culture. It's kid-friendly without being childish, and that's an achievement. The main reason I don't watch Empires is because I feel like the roleplay/lore aspect is a bit too childish for me (or I was never enough of a theater-kid to appreciate it), not a criticism of it or anyone who watches it, it's just not for me, but Hermitcraft has this "just friends playing a game together" kind of vibe. Hermitcraft generally has a lot more time put in per video compared to the old days on Mindcrack, too, with hours-long builds being condensed into 50 seconds of timelapse. I remember watching Guude painstakingly completely clearing out a jungle block by block, just because he liked the grass colour better than in other biomes, while he told stories about his home town. Like, yeah, I enjoyed that. Watching someone clear out a forest has almost the same kind of catharsis as mining out a big area, but I kind of want to get to the part where it's DONE and the build begins, and the Hermits do that. Here's to ten more years of Hermitcraft! (but not eleven more, that would be too many ;-) )
@IndyJay53
@IndyJay53 Год назад
I agree that Hermitcraft has a great balance of wholesomeness without being too childish for those of us who grew up on Mindcrack to watch. I remember coming home from bad days at school and listening to Guude ramble on while grinding away at some hopelessly large project. It was so comforting. I think in season 9 X has done a great job of calling back to those days. Just playing the game and taking us along for the journey, with less focus on the theatrics. Not that there's anything wrong with fanciful storylines, I just miss the simpler times I suppose.

I was definitely recommended this series because i was looking into starting up a server of my own and hoping it would become a small community one day. I pretty much just play solo casually as it is but I've really been yearning to start up something bigger. I really like the idea of how big Minecraft is and how there's so much space for people to come together and work on communal projects and also have enough space for everyone to have a place to call their own in game.
