GAME: The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker HD
AUTHOR: Nintendo
The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker is set on a group of islands in a vast sea, a departure for the series. The player controls series protagonist Link as he attempts to save his sister from the sorcerer Ganon and becomes embroiled in a struggle for the Triforce, a sacred wish-granting relic. Aided by allies including pirate captain Tetra - an incarnation of Princess Zelda - and a talking boat named the King of Red Lions, Link sails the ocean, explores islands, and traverses dungeons to acquire the power necessary to defeat Ganon. Wind, which facilitates sailing, plays a prominent role and can be controlled with a magic conductor's baton called the Wind Waker.

Honestly, I wouldn't mind a non-blind playthrough of Twilight Princess. I say this from personal experience because as somebody who has completed the game before as a child, playing it again with familiarity made me discover some things that I never caught on before when I first played it. Honestly, an LP of TT would probably be an experience worth rediscovering, especially if you're somewhat familiar with the game.

I always liked this headcanon of Link's confusion during Ganon's speech. No matter what, Link cannot begin to grasp what Ganon wants because he's lived his life on the high seas, he has no frame of reference to even picture what a desert could even look like

I don't necessarily think it's just confusion alone Link was expressing, but moreso that he's exhausted. Definitely makes it more plausible for Ganondorf to go right over and quickly dispatch the swordsman if the young man is tired.

I would absolutely be on board for a Twilight Princess LP. Dunno if you planned this, but you've been on a series retrospective of sorts so on that note it makes sense 'cause you'll get to play it and experience it as the 4th 3D Zelda instead of "just a Zelda game". And also, even if you've played it before, you've experienced so much since then and grown as an entertainer that there's absolutely no way you wouldn't be able to make it entertaining for your audience. I think it's important to explain Ganondorf's final words to Link and Tetra "The wind...it is blowing". In this game we learn how Ganondorf started on his path to evil: a man who was envious of Hyrule's privileges while he and the Gerudos were forced to live a harsh nomadic lifestyle which he metaphorically recounts as the difference between their winds. After becoming the demon Ganon and Hyrule sinking this desire was further corrupted but it was unchanged. He wanted prosperity and a chance at happiness for himself and his people and in many ways he saw Hyrule in an idealized light: a symbol of the happiness that his people were denied but that they deserved. But, that's just it. His idealized Hyrule was just that, an ideal memory of a bygone age. In this way he was not to dissimilar to the King of Red Lions: relics of the old world that pined after Hyrule: the ideal castle on a hill. But Hyrule is long gone and nothing can change that. Knowing all of the above, Ganondorf as he dies reminisces over his original goal. He acknowledges that the Hyrule he obsessed over is long gone. But he now knows that the spirit and memory of Hyrule, carried by Link and Tetra will continue on, the winds symbolizing that the spirit of Hyrule lives on even if the kingdom does not. He dies content that the prosperity he longed after still exists in those two children, dying not as Ganon the demon but as Ganondorf the man.
@pokecomic
@pokecomic Год назад
I always just took it as him metaphorically following up on his comment that for him the wind's coming always meant death no matter what. Now he's dead so for him that means the wind is blowing. Don't think it really means more than that tbh.

I also like how he addresses the gods being kind of dickheads in this timeline: The people prayed that the Hero of Time would return but since that didn't happen, they asked help from the gods. And what did the gods do? FLOOD THE ENTIRE WORLD, DROWNING PRETTY MUCH EVERYTHING, WITH THE WATER BEING TOO TOXIC FOR EVEN THE ZORAS AND ONLY A FEW OTHERS SURVIVING! How's THAT any benevolent?! If I was Ganondorf, I'd be pissed off too at the hipocrisy of such "deed".

@@MaxusFox23 Unfortunately this is because they wanted to seal away Ganondorf's power without a chance of anyone getting the Master Sword to unseal it. They did take refuge but I can't imagine no one died in the process.

I really like this ganondorf. You can see in his speech before the last fight that while he may have been evil, his desire to claim hyrule was rooted in a desire to be free of the cruelty of the desert he was raised in. This ganondorf has something that many incarnations are missing. Humanity. Something that stands out all the more by the fact he never transforms into the pig ganon ( with the puppet being just that, a puppet and not really him) This ganon is evil...but still human.

Around episode 5, you were slightly disappointed to find out the world map didn't loop. As it turns out, that was planned at one point in development, but it was cut for story reasons. That scene of ganondorf laughing maniacally as the ocean above is drowning everything, will forever remain as my favorite ganondorf moment and one of my favorite scenes in gaming. Something about the cinematics and overall craziness and epicness of it never fails to hit me hard. And also, can I just say, I love that Ganondorf becomes a monster BEFORE you sword fight him? Something about his power peaking in his human form feels like a statement, unlike Ocarina's version. And also, I love how it's legit hard, and how hard hitting his attacks are. While it’s kinda predictable/cliche how Tetra/Zelda gets kidnapped, there's actually something I (kinda?) appreciate about it - which also ties into Tetra being “transformed” into Zelda by Daphnes, so to speak, and some of the game's themes. There are legit questionable aspects to the transformation (making her skin lighter was a poor choice in any case imo), but aside from those I most often see it criticized because the Zelda look “doesn’t fit Tetra”, that she wouldn’t wear a dress or anything like this - and top of that, as soon as this happens, she just gets locked away and then kidnapped... But like, I believe that’s entirely the point. It’s a direct parallel to Link being given the Hero’s Clothes for his birthday and hating them, and then minutes later his life gets turned upside down by a sudden strike of tragedy that literally forces him to set out for his journey. Both what happens to Link and what happens to Tetra are symbolic representations of one of Wind Waker’s greater themes: the children of today having to inherit the burdens of the past, regardless of their own feelings, wellbeing, or if they can even comprehend said past. Tetra here had the role of “Zelda” forced on her by Daphnes - and he meant well with this, mind you - and it’s intentionally supposed to be something that’d feel strange and disheartening to her. And the second she has to take on that role, she is "cursed" with the same fate as any other "princess" and is kidnapped, losing some of her individuality and agency for the sake of upholding tradition. Just like how Link does not like to wear the Hero’s Clothing, and his entire life became infinitely harder the very day he got them. From a meta perspective, this potentially strained relationship with the past also mirrors Wind Waker itself standing in the shadow of the already iconic Ocarina of Time. Wind Waker both honors the legacy of Ocarina of Time, while also indirectly pointing out its flaws, and setting itself apart with its own style - much like Link and Tetra stumbling and trying to find their way in the world while their ancestors’ past continues to haunt them. It’s a really cool aspect of this game, I feel. Going into how Wind Waker sets itself apart from Ocarina of Time - while the set-up of the climax is pretty identical (character is revealed to be Zelda, she gets kidnapped, Ganon waits in his lair for the final confrontation) What actually ends up happening in the final dungeon is deliberately quite different. In Ocarina of Time, the final dungeon was earily quiet, while Ganon’s theme would slowly grow louder and louder until you reach his chambers, where you see him literally playing his own theme song on that huge organ, with Zelda hanging above him trapped in a crystal, like a price he and Link are about to fight for. Just completely over the top and vain, but very fitting for the kind of person Ganon was back then. But in Wind Waker, Ganon’s theme can be heard from the start, and instead of getting louder, it gets quieter and quieter as you ascend, until nothing can be heard at all. You find him with Zelda, who’s not chained up or displayed, but just sleeping in a bed, like Ganondorf just carefully put her to sleep. A scene that could seem warm and peaceful if you didn’t know the surrounding context. Instead of urging Link to fight him, Ganondorf just takes another moment to just, let everything set in, reflect upon what brought all three of them here, and what must happen next. There’s still hints of that old rage and pride somewhere, but it’s like little sparks compared to everything else now. And when Link does confront him at the top of the tower, Ganondorf continues to reminiscence about the past - it's been centuries since he's decided to reject his humanity and became a demon, and at this point, he's starting to wonder what it was all for, truly. He's still the same character, but it's so interesting to see him think back to his past self from the Ocarina of Time era like that, see how he's changed, and see how he's remained the same.

I’d like to take a moment to talk about why this iteration of Link is my favorite of them all, and how it connects to the themes of the game. By the time this game starts, the legendary green-clad hero is nothing more than a legendary tale. He’s not expected to have a descendant or reincarnated, because his spirit literally left this timeline in OoT. Most people only remember him nowadays through a tradition where children don a green tunic once they reach a certain age. My point is, this Link is one of the only iterations to have NO connection to a great prophecy or legend by the time his journey begins. All he wants to do is save his sister from the Helmeroc King, who he has no idea is even associated with Ganondorf. Hell, it’s doubtful he has any idea who Ganondorf is outside of what the King of Red Lions tells him. Even though King Daphnes did end up choosing a green-clad hero to lead the fight against Ganondorf, it’s not because of guidance from the gods or such. He just believes that his courage is the closest thing this world has to the Hero of Time’s. This Link wasn’t meant to be a reincarnation of the hero, he had to work his way up to it. The King of Red Lions could have picked just about any bright-eyed youth to collect the pearls, wield the Master Sword, and gather all the Triforce fragments. Link, some goofy kid from a small island, is not the hero because “the divine prophecy said so,” he’s the hero because he proves to be the best for the job. In this new world, he’s practically building up a brand new heroic legacy. Really, wiping the slate clean is the whole theme of Wind Waker; The bygone era that is the original Hyrule is destroyed by King Daphnes, a man who clung on to his old failure to protect his kingdom. Ganondorf, similarly, wishes to revive his old world out of attachment. But while both cannot integrate into this new world due to their nostalgia for the past, the King would rather let the original legacy of Hyrule, the spirit of the hero of the past, the Master Sword, Ganondorf, and even himself drown under the Great Sea, than to destroy the civilizations that have built up in the centuries since his time. With that, the people of today have a chance for a new beginning. A new Hyrule. A new green-clad hero. A new royal bloodline. A new force of darkness. A new awesome sword. And given that Spirit Tracks, the only game to come after Wind Waker in the Zelda timeline (aside from Phantom Hourglass, which continues _this_ Link’s story as opposed to a brand new version), refers back to this game specifically, it’s clear that a new legacy was indeed forged.

Killing you will literally accomplish nothing, and you didn't even ruin his wish, but he's just gone completely insane. The scenery, with the wind blowing silently before the fight, followed by the amazing bait-and-switch the King performs with the Triforce wish. The hauntingly crazed laugh Ganon let’s put when he realizes he’s lost everything he’s fought for over generations, and the incredible fight that follows as the sea swallows up the old world. I also love the speech Ganon gives before the fight, about how the winds in Gerudo Desert always spelt death, and how he echoes that with his final words. All in all, just an amazing sequence.

Ganondorf's story throughout Wind Waker is an interesting cautionary tale of the inability to let go of the past. Throughout this entire journey you have cases as such like the eternal night, the return of phantom Ganon, his sword style dating back to the Gerudo's of old back in OOT with his Swords being named after Kotake and Koume etched in Hylian. (Zubora Gaboras in a few versions for some reason). No doubt that had Ganondorf gotten his way and succeeded, would've gone back to the ambitious man in his youth once everything was all set and done. Edit: Yes

Toon Link is one of my favorites too! Something that annoyed me about the NA botw is that they took away from Link’s personality. In the Japanese version of the game Link’s log is actually his diary. He writes about how he feels about things as they happen. If you get all of his memories he reacts to that - he wants to save Zelda so he can see her smile with his own eyes again. So it adds depth to his journey and gives a “why” to his resolve. Idk, just made him more of a character. Damn you localization!

With all the characterization we learn about Ganondorf I think it's interesting to reflect on how Ganon has evolved by comparing him to his fellow Nintendo Big Bad: Bowser. In the beginning Ganon and Bowser were essentially interchangeable characters: big scary demons who wanted power and captured a princess to do so. As more games came out and Nintendo grew, both became far more humanized but in vastly different ways. Bowser was given more humanoid attributes in his personality and had his own supporting cast to flesh out his own character such as Bowser Jr. He became goofier as a way to demonstrate that underneath it all he's not really a bad guy. With Ganon, they went the completely opposite direction. As Ganondorf he became far more cunning and tactical: often forming near foolproof plans with Ganon retconned as a demonic form he adopts as a consequence of his lust for power. Instead of goofiness, Ganondorf became more fleshed out in motivation. Instead of a generic evil overlord, his evilness is instead presented as a consequence of him and his people's past and his desire for power a direct result of his desire for prosperity. I thought it was interesting how these two figures had such similar origins yet ended in vastly different places.

In any other game, Hyrule would’ve been saved and the great sea gone for good. Not in this game though; it stays submerged, strengthening theme of letting go of the past and sail forward to a better future. It’s honestly one of the most profound endings in video game history. Coupled with the credits theme and just… Man I love this game. Yes, I’m aware there are some glaring issues mostly stemming from its crunch development and cut content (I mean the last dungeon is basically an enemy gauntlet, boss rush and one puzzle involving phantom Ganon and that pretty much it) and it feels like they only scratched the surface with the concept of the Great Sea. But like I said before, waaaaaaaay back in the first part, this was my first video game ever and it helped me become the gamer I am today. And it’s all thanks to my Uncle who gifted me his GameCube and his copy of the OG Wind Waker. And because of those reasons, it’ll always have a place in my heart. And thank you Nico for playing through this wonderful game 🥹 Anyway, with all that mushy stuff out of the way, TIME FOR RECOMMENDATIONS FOR THE NEXT LP! Fire Emblem: Three Houses, second playthrough. You know you wanna. 😉 Fire Emblem: Awakening. The second best FE game that’s perfect for beginners. Super Paper Mario. An “eh” game in turns of combat but stellar in its story. Mario & Luigi: Super Star Saga. An RPG with timed-button skills and hilarious comedy. Professor Layton and the Curious Village. A short but sweet visual novel with charming characters and brain-teasing puzzles. Kid Icarus: Uprising. I know it’s not your usual kind of game you play but it is worth it for its characters and comedy. Zelda: Twilight Princess. In case you’re still in that Zelda high and I don’t mind if it won’t a completely blind LP. And that’s all for now. Until then, stay classy, Nico!

Now that you've seen all of this game, I wanna talk about this version of Ganondorf. This Ganondorf always felt a lot different compared to his other iterations in the series for multiple reasons. This Ganondorf is the one who has lost everything he has cared about. All he ver wanted was ruling over Hyrule to make up for the deserted wasteland that he got presented as his Kingdom as his birthright, all because his ancestors got banished. He wanted to give his people including himself a better life. The only way he was taught to survive by his surroundings is by scheming and pure power. He was pushed over the edge by something explained in a game you have yet to play, so I leave that part out for now. So far this only describes the OoT version however. What makes the difference is, that this Ganondorf succeeded at first, in a future without Link. After obtaining everything he ever wanted he got Devine punishment for his greed and lost literally everything. The country he always wanted to rule was now an even more desolate wasteland than the Gerudo desert by being drowned. The reason you don't encounter any Gerudo in this game is because as a punishment they got drowned alongside Hyrule, unlike most other races that got saved by the goddesses in some way. Meaning Ganondorf also lost all his suspects an literal family. In memory of them he even dawns Gerudo twinblades opposed to the trident he usually wields, just like all the Gerudos you face in OoT and Majoras Mask. So now all he really wants is undo his mistakes and get back what he had by using all he has ever known, meaning schemes and violence. Kind of sad if you think about it...

You can't agree with how he went about things, but you can sympathize with what he wanted for his people. Seeing this again makes me like the King as a character even more just from the fact that he was willing to let the land of a bygone era, along with himself and Ganondorf, slumber beneath the ocean to give Link, Tetra, and all the inhabitants on the surface a future. Thank you for playing one of my favorite games in the series and yes I would love for you to play Twilight Princess. It's important to remember that, before now, Hyrule itself had never truly drowned. It'd been covered by the Great Sea, but Hyrule itself remained intact. So, with the king's final words, the Hyrule of old is finally, truly gone, washed away in the waters of the ocean, never to return. And so Tetra and Link have set out to discover a new Hyrule, not where the old legacy can live on, but where they can instead start fresh, not tied down and shackled by their ancestors of old who are hoping for days gone by.

This is my favorite final boss fight in The Legend of Zelda series, period! The setting, the atmosphere, the music, the fact that this is the first Ganondorf boss battle to be a sword-fight, the fact that Zelda is helping during the boss fight without it being a cutscene, the final blow to Ganondorf, and Ganondorf himself! We get Ganondorf’s motivation back in his days of Ocarina of Time, as to why he sought to rule Hyrule; he was sick of the Gerudo Desert’s deathly winds and yearned for the winds that Hyrule brought. It’s what makes his final words so deep (And yes, his *final* words. This Ganondorf in this timeline is dead. Not sealed away, not frozen in stone, *DEAD);* “The wind… It is blowing…” It’s left up to interpretation what wind Ganondorf is referring to; The wind of death, or the wind of Hyrule. This is tied with Breath of the Wild as my favorite game in the Legend of Zelda series. Were this available for the Switch, I’d purchase it in a heartbeat! I look forward to when you eventually get to Twilight Princess HD. Even if you remember some things about it, it’s the rest we want you to see. Edit: Great job, Sai. This is one of the reason why Wind Waker is my favorite Zelda, despite of all their shortcoming. First of all, any stories about Family Relationship is just my jam. I love how Link first go on an adventure not just to save the world, but his sister. It is after that that he realized a big bad guy had appeared. And if no one stop him, everything will be in ruin. Link's reason to be a hero is very contained. He just want to save his family. And in regard to the big bad guy himself, you'll realize that This Ganon...is actually not that bad of a guy! I mean, yeah, he want to rule the world, that's not something a good guy would ever do. But the reason why he want to claim Hyrule in the first place...is just cuz he wanna save his people. Dessert, the place where the Gerudo lived, is a very harsh environment. The wind always brought death to his people. He was jealous of Hyrule's wind, coveted Hyrule's wind. He want his people to live in peace without fearing for the environment fighting them back. So, he becomes evil. Ganon from Wind Waker is like Lelouch from Code Geass; trying to attain justice using the wrong method Wind Waker may look cartoony, but the story itself is not so much. In this game, everything is never black and white TwT

For Twilight Princess as a lets play, I would definitely say go for it for a few reasons. 1. It's been so long that youve forgotten a lot and tbh its been so long that you might have even misremembered a lot of stuff. 2. You didn't play any game before it so now you'll be looking at TP from an entirely new angle as someone whose played and beaten 4 other Zelda games in the past. 3. You didn't have the Penguins last time to drop cool lore bits that help you look at the game better or peer pressure you into doing side stuff you probably didnt even know existed. 4. While your reactions to things is a big draw to your videos, an equally or even more important draw is your adlibbing. 5. This technically won't be your first "not blind" lets play. While you didnt know that EXACT version of the game before, you did know the general order of events that would happen in FF7R as well as all the characters. 6. I REALLY like Twilight Princess and really want to see more people play it. Seriously, for how much that game is held as "the cool dark big adventure zelda game" I consider it to be really underrated.

Your addlib game is more than enough to warrant a let's play even if it's 100% not blind, can't wait to see your midna dynamic

Hmm. Do I want Nico to LP my favorite Zelda game of all time, even if it might not be 100% Blind? Yes yes, and thousand times yes! Twilight Princess all the way, baby!

Thank you so much for playing through this game Nico. Through this LP, I got to re-experience my childhood (I’m talking about the HD version). This has to be by far my most favorite Zelda story and Ganondorf in a game just because of reasons that actually make sense instead of just wanting to have power.
