I was at that avalon. And looking back, I didn't realize how awesome his neutral was at the time. His conversions are pretty darn creative too. Thank you for making this!
@@lapplandkun9273 Sixx still playing Link i watch the Dreamhack Rotterdan just to see how Sixx deal against Zain, was hard to see lol, but he still playing and main Link, i watch him some times on Ice stream (before the covid19 crisis)
This is what the future of melee should look like. Instead of spending decades grinding out the same characters i wanna see some diversity and i wanna see characters who aren't as great tap into their full potential
I mean this is why I'm grateful for aMSa and Axe - they bring in some diversity to the pro scene. I'd love to see more characters be represented, though I'll admit I'm pretty happy with current diversity. Thanks for watching the video phillfraggy!
Not even a minute in and I've been diagnosed with terminal illnesses from how sick his Link is. Great comp. Proves that tiers don't mean anything when the player is good.
yeah i mean armada has always said himself, tiers don't matter unless you wanna become top 100 in the world. even then, he thinks that every character has the potential to break into the top 100
Hey thanks for watching! And yeah I'd agree - I think tiers only really matter at the highest level, but if anything it really relies on player skill, not the character they're playing. Very cool to see stuff like this!
anything that isn’t the top 6 are fun to watch, why? because you don’t always get to see a Link or a Mario or a Doc. You literally can queue up on Slippi and there’s a good chance it’s a top 6 tournaments? you can find lots of matches with them in it. It’s not bad, the matches are easier to come by. Seeing Link here? godly, and I love it.
I have a lot of appreciation for the characters that aren't in the top 6. I know at the professional level more often than not you see characters who are in the top 6, but man there's just so much variety which is awesome to see. Thanks for watching the video Ecchi Bot!
It goes to show that because of the depth of mechanics, a lot of the lower tiers in Melee aren't far away from being good. A lot of the mid tiers like Link would really only need a couple buffs to be viable.
I'd agree with that assessment! I think a lot of it comes down to mechanics, but yeah a couple of tweaks here and there I think could really make a couple of characters viable. Thank you as always for watching, SmashTurtle!
Hot take I think Link is totally viable, he just needs that godlike player to put all the different Link styles together to create one big monstrosity of mixups, traps, and zoning. For the record I'm a Link main so I might be a little biased (I'm also not that good at the game, but I do be makin hoes mad on netplay right n left)
@@TheKornstalker I do not agree with you. While I agree that their are multiple styles in which to play Link and that no one has shown 100% mastery of all styles, I think in Melee that's fairly irrelevant. Link is held back by several fundamental flaws: Horrible grounded base movement options (Dash/Dash dance/Run/Wavedash) Bad jumpsquat (6f) Terrible grab (slow which makes it bad OOS and for whiff punish and can't grab airborn opponents which means SHFFL spam is even stronger against him) Slow frame data Weaker combos/confirms -- Now a character can have one of those flaws and still be quite strong. In fact some characters need those kind of flaws to keep them from being busted (Imagine if Falco was faster with a better jumpsquat. God character.) But Link has too many flaws in his base kit, and none of the crazy Link tech, as cool as it might be, fixes any of those core issues. Against strong players who know the Link matchup, those flaws are not something that can be played around enough. You look at players like Aklo beat some other high level players yes, but his opponents don't have much experiance in the matchup given Links rarity, and Aklo is a top player (18th in the world currently) so yes of course even with his worse secondaries he can beat good players (Look at Zains, Roy, same thing). -- Fundamentally Link just can't really get meaningful openings frequently enough against high level players to win against top/high tiers. He's just too slow and doesn't have good tools to deal with strong rushdown, and once he loses the lead he has no hope of breaking down a top/high tier character on the defensive without multiple high risk hard reads. Even in PM where he received dramatic buffs to many of the flaws listed here and much more, he still ends up on the lower half of the pack. That's because slower defensive zoners just don't do well in the Melee/PM engine, and Link is that archetype to a T. In Melee where he is substantially weaker, I don't think he has a hope of pushing into viability. You just can't play around his lack of speed and frame data enough to make him viable. -- This isn't to say that you can't play him. Aklo still does and beats top 100 and even some top 50 players with Link. But you will hit a wall with him where you just need to be several levels better than your opponent to win with him because he just isn't a good character, and people with more experience in the matchup won't get hit by the tricks he needs to land to keep him playable.
@@Saskaruto16 I agree with most of what you said, but I feel that a top level Link player on a good day could one day win a major. I agree he'll never be consistent at the top level, but I feel that if the stars align, Link has enough tools in any given situation that he could pull it off.
@@TheKornstalker I don't think there is a single bracket you could put together with the strength to be considered a Major/Supermajor in which Link could ever have a hope of winning. Top 32, yeah doable. Top 8 at a major? With the perfect bracket, maybe, but still requires a ton of luck and upsets. But winning? You have to go through some combination of the best players in the world, many of whom play characters that annihilate Link. Spacies, Sheik, and Falcon, are all basically unwinnable for Link at top level. Puff, Marth, Yoshi, are Pika are still definitely losing for Link, even though they have to approach Link at first once they have a lead he can't do anything. I could see him being incredibly annoying for Peach, ICs, maybe Doc or Samus. But there is no world where he wins a tournament facing only matchups he has a hope in when it's a Major/Supermajor.
I haven't played much of Link in Melee (or Smash 64 for that matter), but I do enjoy his play style. Sixx makes him look like a lot of fun for sure! Thanks for watching the video Well Ended!
This was my first time seeing a Melee Link as well and I have to say that I was quite impressed! Sixx is a very sick player! Thanks for watching The broken sword!
Haha that must have been a pretty funny experience! I can just imagine that you think it's some no name Link and he just annihilates you haha. It'd make a lot of sense if it was Sixx, but imagine if it really was this random Link! Thanks for the comment, Human Identity!
I main link in every smash, he's fun every smash and good too, idk about brawl though he's really bad in brawl, and melee link is my favorite to be honest, his back air 👌
I'll say that I've come to appreciate Link more in each Smash game he's been in. I actually didn't use him too much in 64 in Melee, but in Brawl that's when I started using him more. I like Link quite a bit! Thanks for the comment JustSaiyan!
@@Frudgey oh I see, I respect brawl link players, hes not trash in brawl, but for example, his arrows DON'T DO KNOCK BACK like he's worse then melee basically, but I guess if you don't rely on specials he's decent, anyways dude if you played ssf2 he's good too, and you should try him in ultimate
I think the game really hits it's stride around chapter 4, though that said it is a hack 'n' slash so I think what you said was fair. Regardless, thanks for watching the video Arrowthekrawlslayer!
Sixx is mind-blowingly awesome at playing Link. I really wish I could see him in more tournaments as his play is SO good! Thanks for watching TrainerSam!
I didn't realize that was the case until someone pointed that out - and I was surprised to see that was the case! I thought that was interesting. Thanks for tuning in Evan!
@@Alaskanman him being slow is all the more reason to be wavedashing. Maybe not a lot but it can't be that bad, especially wavelands. I've talked with Kuya about this before and he agrees
Evan Moran Why bother wasting inputs on a lousy wavedash when you could be be spacing yourself with boomerangs and bombs? Sure, you could waveland, there’s probably some stylish players whom utilizes that. But it won’t make you much faster.
@@Alaskanman it's not always about being faster its about baiting and feigning with more movement options, when you don't always have the space to pull projectiles
Do you have any names of Samus players you'd like to see? I'm definitely open to doing a Samus video, I just need to know where to look! Regardless, thanks for watching Zelrous!
@@Frudgey TheSwooper, Morsecode, Duck and Hughs. If you do it, check the Duck vs Hungrybox at Canada Cup Grand finals, (I never see again a samus beating hbox)
