Super simple to make a homemade steam engine called Hero's steam engine after Hero of Alexandria who described it in the 1st century AD. I did later get it to work with an alcohol stove and you can see that in my follow-up video about how to make an alcohol stove and minion:

Hero's Steam Engine is famous for giving nerds dreams about the Industrial Revolution happening circa 100 AD.

RimstarOrg Where can I get a Wimshurst machine? (For cheap)
@RimstarOrg
@RimstarOrg 9 лет назад
Pirat Carribean That depends on what you mean by cheap. ebay.com has them for a range that seems to be from $60 to $150. Googling "wimshurst machine for sale" shows www.alibaba.com/showroom/wimshurst-machine.html has them for cheaper from China. All that ignores any shipping costs and quality issues.
@PiratCarribean
@PiratCarribean 9 лет назад
RimstarOrg I live in The Netherlands, I have no idea if I can get them here. If I import them from other countries, the shipping costs are sometimes higher than the value of the product itself. I think it is a better idea for me to make one myself.

Pirat Carribean If you make your own and you want something more powerful than the Wimshurst machines made using CDs then you might consider using old vinyl records instead for the disks. They have a much larger surface area and so you can create more charge separation.

Good stuff. If we wanted to get scientifically priggish, we could say that steam is an invisible gas and what we see is actually water vapor that has condensed. Sometimes if you look closely at a teakettle nozzle, there is an invisible gap for a few millimeters before the visible part starts. That invisible gap is actually the steam.

Nice little project from one my favorite underknown people of history. Image if his ideas weren't seen as mere novelty. I wonder where we'd be today.
@RimstarOrg
@RimstarOrg 9 лет назад
CapnHolic One of the other things that drove the steam engine era was also the coal and the advancing, stronger metals that could handle the pressures. But who knows, maybe having the steam engine would have spurred on some of the other necessary advances. The Romans were in England after all, where a lot of the coal was that drove the industrial revolution.

Excellent example! The only thing I would point out is that when we are "seeing steam" it is actually water vapor at that point when we can see something... steam itself is invisible.

Would adding additional jet ports help the thing spin with the alcohol flame? Perhaps just the two holes but making them larger or smaller would help?
@RimstarOrg
@RimstarOrg 9 лет назад
USWaterRockets Hmm... I really can't say. Sounds like there's room for experimentation. +Martel DuVigneaud pointed out below that a hotter alcohol stove is possible, just a little more work to make. It would be nice to get it working with more of a DIY flame source.
@USWaterRockets
@USWaterRockets 9 лет назад
RimstarOrg come to think of it, your water should boil at the same temperature regardless of the flame source. It must be that the torch is sufficiently hotter that the energy lost in the steam doesn't cool the water faster than the alcohol flame can heat it. So, what if you increase the size of the alcohol flame? If you use a larger wick or multiple wicks? That might give you more heat per unit area and keep the water boiling.
@RimstarOrg
@RimstarOrg 9 лет назад
USWaterRockets Yup. That's what I was thinking, an alcohol burner with multiple flames. +Martel DuVigneaud brought it up below.
@USWaterRockets
@USWaterRockets 9 лет назад
Think a really hot fine tipped soldering iron. You don't use the to solder the tabs on metal shields. You use a big fat high wattage soldering iron for that, even though it might not be as hot, it still does a better job. Or a better analogy would be you don't need higher voltage, you need more current!

The simplest engine ever but it can't be taken into practice
@1marcelfilms
@1marcelfilms 9 лет назад
If you use a needle and a syringe it would be easier to fill. If you were to fill it with alcohol (the can) would it shoot flames ?
@RimstarOrg
@RimstarOrg 9 лет назад
‍1marcelfilms Good idea, as long as the syringe needle is sufficiently small. You probably don't want the holes to get too big. And that would be a real rocket propelled Hero's engine!

Nope. In this follow-up video ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-05f6ZaWmr8Q.html the flame is from directly below the can. There's also not much water in the can so it doesn't have as much mass as you might think.
@seafirefr.4751
@seafirefr.4751 2 года назад
I mean, don’t get me wrong, it’s a very interesting design, but it’s hardly an engine, unless you were able to attach connection points to drive something, at best, I can see this becoming a device to generate electricity. It’s also a very high maintenance design unless you were able to get the right temperature consistent, which is a rather easy fix and even then, the water reserves inside the can will expire in a short amount of time.
@SodiumInteresting
@SodiumInteresting 3 года назад
are you sure the flame jet isn't just pushing. since it didnt spin at all before
@RimstarOrg
@RimstarOrg 3 года назад
Yes, it's very clearly the steam coming out of the can that's doing it.

can you use this to generate electricity somehow? like maybe with a coil of wire, and suspend this over a campfire? pretty cool survival trick if you ask me
@RimstarOrg
@RimstarOrg 9 лет назад
TechRedstone You can probably generate a tiny bit of electricity, but there's not a lot of torque with this. If there had turned out to be then I had planned on trying it.

+Harshit Dubey It's harder to do, and I'm not sure it would even work, but you could try something like I did with the sunflower heat engine (ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-m9i3VVd9ISk.html) but arranged vertically instead.
@harshitdubey3674
@harshitdubey3674 8 лет назад
+RimstarOrg is it possible to use thin thread althrough
@RimstarOrg
@RimstarOrg 8 лет назад
Harshit Dubey Sure. But since the thread is tied at both ends, to the can and to wherever it's hanging from, it won't be able to keep spinning forever. But you'll at least be able to see that it works.
@harshitdubey3674
@harshitdubey3674 8 лет назад
+RimstarOrg how can i generate electricity with this
@RimstarOrg
@RimstarOrg 8 лет назад
+Harshit Dubey For electricity you could hang it from a motor shaft. When you turn a motor shaft, the motor becomes a generator instead and produces electricity. However, I don't guarantee you'll get enough torque from this to actually turn the motor. I'm doubting it. You could also try a simpler one by attaching magnets to the top and surrounding them by coils that are stationary i.e. make your own simpler, less powerful generator. You might be able to light an LED that way, again, assuming you can produce enough torque to make that turn (any generator produces an opposite force that opposes the rotation.) You'd also have to make sure the magnets don't get too hot since that will demagnetize them.
@thepeach12345
@thepeach12345 3 года назад
i think the can is spinning because the pressure from the blow torch is making it spin
@RimstarOrg
@RimstarOrg 3 года назад
You can clearly see the steam coming out of the sides in a direction that would make it spin. The orientation of the blow torch flame wouldn't make it spin though. I also have this follow-up video with the flame directly below the can ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-05f6ZaWmr8Q.html

AndyFromBeaverton Good point. I'd think so too but having done it this way it surprisingly it may not be the case. Shaking that can like I showed actually caused the fluid to jet out and rapidly emptied the can. Though that won't work with some sodas.
