A walk-through look at the Hersheypark arcade in 2019. It pales in comparison to what existed in the 80s and 90s, but there are still a few great titles up and running. There's also one iconic game that is deserving of a much better fate than it currently has.

It’s probably been 20 years since I’ve been to Hershey Park for the amusements (seems like every time I go there these days is for some work Expo). I was that kid who’s mom took him to 6 Flags, Dorney Park, Hershey Park or down the shore and I would spend half the day in the arcade with no money just watching people play. That would frustrate her (with good reason) to no end. When the video started out, I saw a lot of modern stuff you typically find at your local Dave and Busters... just giant flashy iPhone games. I honestly thought this video was going to turn into a “This is what happened to Arcades and why there are hardly any left”. As your video progresses I was pleased to see how much retro they still had. A crime they didn’t have a single “Big Red” Neo Geo cabinet. I walk into arcades these days and you are lucky to find one cabinet of anything pre-1995. Sometimes they won’t even have a single fighting game... that’s all arcades we’re for a while... 15 fighting games and a smattering of pinball machines, a Double Dragon and usually a Rastan... there was always a Rastan or an Altered Beast. One thing I really wish you had captured was the ambient sound of the arcade... the conglomerate tone of all the cabinets “Attract Modes”. Hearing that buzz of familiarity just washes over you and brings you back to being a kid again. It’s not dissimilar to walking into an old comic store and smelling all that old paper and ink... it just brings ya back. Great video, and I’m glad you made the time to produce it. So... Which games did you play?

LOL there is a game on the Xbox 360 called "Gameroom" that has ambient arcade sounds and I often just turn it on and pump my surround sound as I'm working on something around the house. Takes me back to 1980. It's wonderful. Thanks for bringing that to everyone's attention.

The audio wasn’t all that great tbh. One, I simply used my phone for recording so the quality was a little rough. Secondly, it was just very echo-y in general, and none of the sounds really drowned out the outside noise. The Park was pretty packed yesterday, maybe even more so in certain areas because not many people were on water rides. In fact, that corner where you see Berzerk and Dragons Lair, it was eerily quiet save for the outside noise. It’s an odd place for sure, it’s almost like you sense death is coming for it like it has all other arcades. I totally relate to the pissing off of parents and adults with arcades while on vacation. How many times did you hear “we came to do x, not play video games.” Or, in some cases they just referred to all of them as “Nintendo.” Little did they know those moments would disappear in our adulthood. It also says something about the whole forcing of someone to have fun vs. allowing them to take enjoyment in the things THEY like and appreciate. Our parents did what they thought was right, but that actually taught me a valuable lesson about not placing my expectations on others. You might be surprised to know I didn’t play a single game. I had no cash on me and didn’t feel like getting crushed at the ATM. I did however come home and play Blitz/Showtime, cleared Virtua Cop 2, and popped Metal Slug X into my 4-slot.

I was unaware of “Gameroom” , thanks for calling that out GJ. I’ll cap some audio from that and use it to make my 2020 version of the Hersheypark arcade.

@@ScarletSprites Oh man that's too bad. They shut down the server in 2013 I believe. It was great. Your Xbox Avatars would roam around a 5 floor arcade that you could decorate and theme. I had an Atari floor, Konami, etc etc. You could challenge your friends scores and it would display on the cabinet. Was awesome. The developer went busy and Microsoft didn't pick it up or support it. Yet we get 50 version of Minecraft 🙄. Not sure you can still download it. Let me check if there are any RU-vid videos. I ended purchasing almost every game available of which there where a lot.

Yeah, not too bad overall actually. A few CRTs have been replaced with LCDs which isn’t great and Shinobi could REALLY use a cap replacement.

It's better than I thought, although it could be so much better if they actually fixed the ones that were out of commission. A lot of the monitors were rough and in desperate need of a recap. If you noticed though, they aren't doing that. They're replacing them with LCDs (Ghostbusters, Mario, and a few others).

Was there yesterday for our company picnic. That Dragon’s Lair has been broke for at least two years, such a shame. When I go I always play Shinobi and the monitor gets worse every year. It desperately needs a cap kit and now the micro switches are starting to break. I offered to buy the Shinobi machine about a year ago, like you left my number, but never heard back. It’s a bummer, but I’m just happy there is still a retro arcade in HersheyPark.
@ScarletSprites
@ScarletSprites 5 лет назад
That’s funny, I just mentioned in a comment that the Shinobi really needs a cap kit. Seeing Mario Bros. run on an LCD the past few years has been a little disappointing too, but I’m guessing no one in that environment really cares for aging technology. Shinobi is likely staring down the same fate.

Hah, you’re probably correct. Outside of a dedicated barcade, I don’t often see older machines any more. Everything is generic playing newer machines with LCDs and lights.

Nice vid. They seemed to have a good mix of old and new. I would have loved to be able to walk out of there with that Dragon’s Lair, 720 and Star Wars pinball. Most of my amusement arcade experience was at Dorney Park. Most of my arcade time was at the local mall of course. But there were a few games that I only ever saw on the boardwalk at the Jersey shore. I only ever had the chance to play the Data East Robocop cab at the shore for example. Anyway. Great video as always. I especially dig the remix of Mike Tyson’s Punchout playing in the background 💥🥊

@ScarletSprites 5 лет назад
Oh man, Dorney and Wildwater. I was at Wildwater a few times but didn’t do too much at Dorney, so I can’t recall the arcade or if I was even ever there. It’s funny how you can recall locations of particular games. I remember hearing chatter about which mall, park, rink, etc. had which games and getting jacked about it and wanting to go. Good times.

A lot of the 80s games were down. Not sure what it looked like this year as I didn’t get over. It’s tough to find a good old school 80s/90s focused arcade.

Yeah, I’m not surprised. Most people wouldn’t waste a good day at the Park in the arcade. When I was older and would go by myself in the mid 90s is when I started spending more time checking things out there.

YES!!! Glad that you go to Hershey Park Scarlet. I haven't been there in 5 years. But glad to see that Street Fighter II, Arkanoid, Super Mario Bros, Double Dragon, Dig Dug are still there bro. I remember with I was 8 years old that the Super Mario Bros arcade machine and Street Fighter II unit were in the establishment bro. I would just buy both because they continued to still offer fond memories of my childhood after 28 years later. Too bad Wrestle War is gone. Anthony..

What a great a selection of both new and old. Most Amusement Arcades today are redemption, Claw Machines and gambling with no Video arcade games in site.

The effort is there and the heart is there from what I’ve heard behind the scenes. It’s just been a struggle to get some up and running, and others are continuously breaking on them because they’re running them regularly every day.

Hershey Park is one of the few non-Disney and Universal Theme Parks that I want to eventually visit. Heard many good things about it; although, I am adraid I may over indulge myself because of my love for sweets and chocolate. It's great they have a real arcade which is dying in most places in the world, except for Japan. It gives me more reason to visit once I have the ability to.
@ScarletSprites

It’s changed a lot over the past twenty years, then again, most things have I suppose. It was under construction yesterday, the main entrance way has been almost completely gutted and torn out. That made me a little sad to not have that familiar walk-in experience, but I’m sure there are reasons for it. Overall I’d say if you’ve never been to it it’s worth the experience, especially if you have kids.

"Whistles" Nice selection. Unfortunately the best I can find for arcade games is an hour away in an area of the circle center mall in IN. It has mainly retro fighters like Virtua fighter 3, Dead or alive 2, Snk vs capcom chaos, KOF 11, Marvel vs capcom 2, and soul caliber 3. Its sad to say but most of those have work out controls. Of course they were selling Virtua Fighter 3 for $300 and it was in good condition. I forgot the other one they were selling. But they had house of the dead, laser tag, ski ball, basketball, wheel of fortune, an older DDR game, air hockey, and I forgot the other games they had. I think I saw a tekken game in there. All I can say is that I spent too much time on KOF 11.
@ScarletSprites
@ScarletSprites 5 лет назад
The unfortunate thing in this case is you’d have to pay admission to the Park to access it. I typically go once a year, which is enough tbh. The fighting game lineup doesn’t sound half bad, but I can definitely see how you’d want to mix in other genres. That would get tiring pretty quick if you were stuck in one style of play. I’m a sucker for House of the Dead and Virtua Fighter. Well, pretty much anything Sega arcade really. I wounding mind a VF3. Depending how it was wired it could be used for other games too.

@@ScarletSprites That same small area had an initial D arcade cabinet but it didn't work. You know the sad part is that it's much better then what my Dave and Buster's has. Dave and buster's is a mix of some classics but mainly stuff for Gen z kids(a few were complete trash).
@sladejosephwilson2300

@@ScarletSprites One of the guys I played against gave me $20 worth of points just playing VF3. Also I don't have the room for Virtua Fighter 3 and I didn't want to see it disappear from that arcade area. I am just happy to an arcade area in my state. There use to be another place to play arcade games in a much smaller area in a different mall. However they got rid of the whole area. What sucked the most is that it had a good working Guilty Gear XX arcade cabinet.

Being a 70s and 80s kid/adult I frequented "real" arcades in their heyday. I understand why they don't really exist anymore but at the same time am sad for this generation of kids who flock to platforms like Twitch. A huge part of the arcade was the atmosphere and social aspect. Meeting new people, meeting girls, interacting with people in real life, not on some screen. It was truly a golden age and I wouldn't trade it for anything. Also, it can't be a real arcade without the cigarette smoke/burns and Spicolli selling weed in the parking lot. 😁
@ScarletSprites
@ScarletSprites 5 лет назад
Haha, that last comment. There was an awkward social aspect to it like you described. We were all nerds, some of us outcasts, but it was always clear that everyone was there enjoying the same thing. It may not have been much, but sometimes it was a nice deviation from reality and one of the few places some felt comfortable being social, however little that may have been. What’s amusing about that is that you always had to gauge any trash talk. Things kind of balanced themselves based on the age and more importantly, size, of the other players. Now, anyone has free reign to just say whatever they want while hiding behind a microphone and broadband line three States away. I often play silently when I do game online, but there is a part of me that would love to transport some of the noisey ones back to 1990 to see if they had the courage to talk like that to an opponent in person. I think there’d be a lot more hush mouth, or parking lot stomps happening.

Puts most ‘Arcade’s’ to shame that I’ve visited in recent years - surprising to see so many older titles in original cabinets still running. I’d have assumed that most theme parks would have cleared out all the older cabs years ago and just had the modern Alien/Terminator light gun games or the mobile phone type games so it’s good to see some of these machines still active. I would have been straight on the Super Hang-On and SF2!
@ScarletSprites
@ScarletSprites 5 лет назад
I think some of it is just that they don’t clean out inventory. You probably noticed that a few of the games just had LCDs dropped in them, which isn’t surprising. I do like Super Hangon though, I’m a sucker for a good driving/racer. It felt like the place to find an Afterburner too, but no such luck.
