One of my annual summer rituals is to visit the arcade at Hersheypark. It's a place that I was also excited to see when I was a young kid and an arcade that I hit a little more frequently in my teen years. The Hersheypark arcade has of course changed drastically since my early days there in the 80s, but I still get good vibes and a little sentimental walking in each year. It's one of the few arcades I can say I've actually been able to visit year after year for decades now. Here's how it looks in 2022.

Wow it’s impressive to see so many old machines from the glory days. An original Karate Champ and Shinobi. Those machines are ancient! I always love seeing Karate Champ because that’s the machine Van Damme plays in Bloodsport. My hat goes off to Hershey for keeping the early 90s alive in some aspect.

Been to Hershey Park many years ago when I was a kid. My father grew up in PA. The arcade looks fantastic and looks like it has all the classic games you'd want to play plus the modern ones look fun as well.

Wow. Hershey Park has changed a lot. I haven’t been there in almost 20 years. I’ll have to get back there. Dorney is where I saw a Big Blue for the first time back in the 90’s. My company is having their company picnic there again finally. So I’m looking forward to checking out the arcade.

I'm a little over an hour away from Hershey. I am very happy to see so many classics in their arcade. When I saw the title of the video, I was expecting a few modern racers and mobile games put on big screens like the local "arcade" we have here. Big props to them for keeping and maintaining so many classic cabinets.

Wow truly impressed with the Hershey park arcade they managed to keep a lot of their old games and haven't gone the way of a Dave & Busters, haven't been there in years. I grew up in NYC and spent my summers at the Jersey Shore (seaside park/heights) there were arcades everywhere up and down the boardwalk with every game you could think of. There all gone now and it's all blown up cell phone games like at a Dave & Busters it's tragic when I think about what it was in it's prime back in the 80s and 90s.

A friend sent me this video. Crazy to see the ol' Minetown Arcade and what's left. I worked as a games repair technician (coughApprenticecough) about 20 years ago for a couple of seasons. That whole left side and especially the back corner used to be all pre-2000s cabinets. Looks like a lot of the bigger ones are still around and they're down to about 1/3 the cabs they had when I was there. Brings back memories to see Dragon's Lair, Hercules, High Score Pool, and the Daytona pack. Sad to not see the Outrun standup, Afterburner II sitdown, nor Heavy Unit anymore. Biggest surprise was to see that Carnival King still there. It's been 20 years so I doubt any of my high scores were on it, but while I was working there, I was big into light gun games, held, and defended the high scores for all 3 stages. I was morbidity curious to see if the scores would pop up during that section of your video to see if any BLU were still there

Wow, grew up less than an hour from Hersheypark so went there frequently as a kid, never paid much attention to the arcade. Surprised with how extensive it is! Friction was an obscure indie title from 2011 if I'm not mistaken and Hercules was one of the few Atari pins and the largest commercial pinball table ever made.

Lost a bunch of games like Brave Firefighters and most of the fighting games, but glad to see a lot of stuff still alive and kicking at the arcade. There where three back in the day. One when you came in, another near the big top and the one where the Falcon is where you took this. Lots of good memories and lots of money spent in there :D

at first view I felt like saying , you could show them a few tips on building a great arcade (dragons lair panel tear AAAH!!), HOWEVER as it went on it shows it still has got some wonderful arcade magic (phew)lots and lots of great arcade memories .sigh places like this will always be my happy place so well done for capturing all this on your recordings . Here in the UK , most arcades had dwindled in the 21st century , but in the last decade there has been a resurgence with different business model ( pay entrance fee all machines then on freeplay ).some examples are Heart Of Gaming London (great lineup ) Arcade Club in northern England locations (amazing lineup ) plus many many more arcades now so its really cheering and uplifting to see the arcade magic is enduring and starting to resurge . your vid it was great to see some classics not normally seen nowadays (top skater/ wave runner) there should always be Daytona lol in America no Sega rally which is a shame as its a great game , big in Europe . Karate Champ although flagging now , was a trendsetter in the day .love Cruisin Blast nowadays so big up to Raw Thrills to keep on rocking with arcade games .eugene Jarvis god bless you sir !!and you sir MR Sprites
@ScarletSprites
@ScarletSprites 2 года назад
I just was able to play Robotron on a cabinet today at a convention. Eugene Jarvis keeps on giving and I love that about Raw Thrills. Sega Rally was available here but you’re right, it wasn’t nearly as popular as Daytona.

Wish my local arcade was still around. I discovered 4-player Daytona and Sega Rally there, that was the future to me. I distinctly remember the feedback in the steering wheel scaring the shit out of me in the first corner. Great memories of looping Area 51 and missing class because of it (we weren't gonna waste our credit!) and annihalating some cocky dude in Tekken 3 to an audience. I remember it tried to be a casino type place in the leaner years and the building is now some bank, I think.... /oldmanrant

Its nice and sad at the same time. The thing with arcades is the experience....not just the games. Just like going to the movies or sporting event, sure you can stay home and watch it or stream it or play online on your PC or console. But it was about the atmosphere. The background music and yells from all the machines...the crowds of people circled around every machine waiting their turn and cheering or groaning...etc... While the selection here was awesome...it was almost empty there. And that makes the luster go out. Its no fun playing a game solo in an empty arcade....no matter the game.

I wish i could go back to my childhood arcade, not sure if they are still around but a little dank place called Pete's Arcade was where I fell in love with arcade games. We didnt have much money back then so i would just go and look at attract modes. After a while the owner Paul got to know me and would give me free credits on the Big Red and that just was the world to me back then.

So much to talk about, I'll probably forget half of them... so don't be surprised if you see multiple comments. 1. First time I ever noticed Tengen and Atari on the same thing... I always new Tengen was Atari, but I always thought Tengen was a rebranding because people associated Atari with "gaming of the past". 2. There are some serious cobble jobs in that line up... did you notice that all the wrestlers at the top of the bezels were cut off? 3. That Dragon's Lair cab is gorgeous, I'd love to have one. I wonder if the LaserDisc's start to get disc rot like some older media tends to do... and if so, I wonder what kind of modern solutions you can use outside of a MiSTer to work around those (Replacement LD's, ODE's... exc). 4. The Real Ghostbusters cab takes me back... I am not sure I ever actually played the arcade, but I certainly watched people play it. 5. They really have a nice mix of games, and it's nice to see some classic cabs mixed in with the types of cabs you would expect to see (stuff like Mr. Do, Arkanoid, Karate Champ and Millipede) 6. I love the Comet pinball. I'll never forget that artwork of the kid with the ice cream cone splashing into the kid behind them. Made me look at roller coasters in a whole new way. 7. I have a Dave and Busters near me, and it depresses me when I see the kinds of machines they have. You'd be lucky to see a Mrs Pacman/Galaga combo cab there anymore. It's all giant Cell Phone game machines, ticket generating chance games and things you "ride". Its been like this a while and as a result, I don't feel the sudden urge to go in and see what they have because I know I'll be disappointed. 8. My son got to play Star Wars battle pod down the shore last year and his mind was blown. I didn't care how expensive it was... it made him feel like a space pilot for 2 mins and that was worth the cost of admission. Final point, and I completely feel ya on this one. We were broke kids, single mom, crummy neighborhood. I can't get over what a trouble and expense it was to drag us kids to some place like a 6 flags or Hershey Park but I know she found a way to get us there. What what little shits we were... where my mom drove us all the way out there, bought us tickets and we would rather hang out in an arcade with $0.00 than actually ride the rides. We would just stand there and watch people play Street Fighter II like it was a TV at a bar. Occasionally she would give us a dollar to play games to coax us out of there and those quarters would be gone in minutes. These machines really did mesmerize you. You just stood there lusting after them... wishing you were about a foot taller and had a roll of quarters in your jean pocket. Now that I have kids of my own, I can look at these situations in a new light. We will go out of our way to buy our kids something cool, and they will spend more time playing with the box. Circle of life.
