I'm pretty new to shotguns, and I was familiar with birdshot and how people used it to hunt birds. I've used it a few times for some invasive bird problems on my property. However, I recently encountered a slug problem in my garden, and naturally figured shotgun slugs should do the trick. Does the same logic apply for eliminating slugs?

You know I bet where this double ball ammo could be very effective is at bear defense, the penetration seems to be very very good, much more than the foster slug, getting to the vitals of a gigantic grizzly could be achieved much more reliably than the foster slug, but really that's about the only logical application I could see this ammo having an upper hand at.... I would absolutely carry this double ball ammo for bear defense, but that's about it Very nice presentation Paul, your videos are a treasure trove of knowledge, extremely valuable and helpful Thank you

I'd wonder after chronograph results/accuracy/lbs on the meat target, with ammo at different temps specifically. I'd also like to hear your thoughts on acclimating firearms to the weather (IE: If it's very cold outside, leaving your rifle, in this case scoped, outside to norm the temperature, and what differences, that makes, bearing in mind bore/overall heat generated by firing the weapon, and how often. I could go on at length, but I am curious: put the same kinds of ammunition in a cooler full of ice, some 'room temperature' some exposed to extreme humidity, some heated to The Suck conditions, I'd like to see those results. Thumbs up again, and thanks again.

My dad and I used to go down to the rail yards by the steel and fiberglass plants every few weeks and pick up glass marbles. He would load his shotgun shells just like those cept with 2 large marbles

You know, the one you can pull a 44 Magnum, 45 Auto, 38 Special, three boxes of ammo, and a box lunch out of the right pocket, and out of the left pocket a boxed set of duelling pistols, a folding bicycle, a small dog, and change for the toll booth.

The reason for the lower velocity with the double ball load is that you are launching the equivalent weight of two shotgun slugs with each shot. A single 0.65" lead ball weighs nearly an ounce. Clearly Herter's vendor needs to go back to the drawing board to figure out a way to keep the balls from adhering to each other. Solutions could include additional buffer material, a thin wad inserted between the two balls, or some sort of plating/coating of the lead ball itself.

The old saying "If it Ain't broke, Don't fix it" comes to mind......

There was that comment about eye protection, and I noticed a "facial wound" appear mid video. I've got a few scars from 60 years of 'return fire' from stationary, inanimate, targets. But I've still got both eyes thanks to good eye protection. Thanks for the info, Paul. I guess my white box 00 Buck will be adequate for rock throwing distance on coyotes, both two and four leg versions.

I worknat Cabela's. Herters is/was a Cabela's brand. BassPro, AssPro more like it, ceo Johnny Morris is gutting the Cabela's brand. Thus herter's brand is being discontinued. Cabela's is now a dying brand. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news folks.

I wouldn't buy this ammo myself. Appears to be far too inaccurate for me. And as Paul has proven in this video, that which it does do some what we'll. Common buckshot and slugs can achieve better results. Thank you Paul for another great video.

I recently picked up a bunch of Herter's 9mm brass case 115gr fmj for $10.95 per 50 round box. Works great in my S&W shield. Fired about 200 rounds last week. All ran perfectly. I understand it's different ammo but same company so I figure it's relevant. Reliable ammo.

Definitely need some shirts and hats. Wish I could make the show. Too far away. Need to come to southeast Paul. Get out of that snow. Good video as always.

Yay it's Paul!

Much as I love shotguns, the reality is that buckshot is a 25 yard prospect for social work. Slugs are better but it just makes it a hard kicking less-than-AK-accurate 'rifle' out to 100. I feel the shotgun must be regarded as a strictly close-in, 'enhanced handgun'. Great for jungle warfare, rural property defense, bird hunting and a poor man's elephant gun with slugs.

Oregon? What about all of the new Commifornia gun law Bill's being introduced?

It seems like a single large round projectile would penetrate like the double .64 cal balls and unlike the foster slug. But we’d have to ask the meat target to ascertain a more definitive answer to that question.

I had to go back and watch that meat target explode again with that slug load. Awesome results from old technology! Dont mess with what works.

Didn't know that a rifled shotgun slug was THAT effective.

Confirming once again that the 12 gauge is the Queen of close quarter defense.

I’m always happy with Paul’s videos as are so many others. What shocks me are the thumbs down numbers. Who would give these a thumbs down and why? Part of me thinks it must be folks either associated with the manufactures of these “hyper” ammo producers or simple anti-gunners. Either way; thanks Paul!

I bought a bunch of that Herters double ball when it was on sale for like $4 a box. I shot a couple boxes at the range and it was pretty boring on paper, but I really can’t find a reason to use them. They’re super at over penetrating, don’t spread, and aren’t as accurate as a slug. Slugs are as good at destroying things, and being as cheap and more accurate as well as not over penetrating, I’d probably use a slug over the double ball.

Now i want to see the old black powder percussion shotgun's buck & ball loading result ! Can find on wiki " back & ball " an X-ray that show they loaded with 3 buckshot , 1 full size ball in the middle and smaller 5 buckshot in the front , would be interesting to see the effectiveness of that kind of load in original percussion and modern shotgun

Paul, i noticed for most 12 gauge ammo tests, you seem to use full power buck and slugs. Could you do a comparison video on the effectiveness of low recoil buck and slug vs full power and #4 buck in a home defense role?

DAAAAANNG!!! That slug blew up the meat target.

You're basically shooting two black powder musket balls, similar diameter, weight, spherical shape, and velocity. From the 18th century I am referring to. Imagine getting two of those things in the same spot, because that's basically what's happening. Seems like it would be underwhelming on paper when just compared to modern day ammunition, but remember how deadly those 18th century flintlocks were. Now you just doubled it. Still way lagging behind a slug, but still isn't messing around.
