Right before the Hiryu got bombed, she actually had very few planes left. Her offensive power was almost gone. Her top priority should have been to save the ship to fight another day.
@projektkobra2247 what does that have to do with it? I just wonder if charges were brought against the commanders responsible, if they survived the war.
Allied militaries made systematic efforts to take Japanese prisoners throughout the war, however allied forces continued to kill many Japanese personnel who were attempting to surrender throughout the war. Contrary to the myth that 'surrender was dishonorable and would disgrace them' It is likely that more Japanese soldiers would have surrendered if they had not believed that they would be killed by the Allies while trying to do so. Allied forces (particularly submarines) usually did not attempt to take prisoners, and the number of Japanese personnel they captured was relatively small. There is no real estimate of the numbers of Japanese naval personnel who died after their ships were sunk and no (Japanese) rescue was available.
@@projektkobra2247 Hiroshima and Nagasaki were attempts to minimise deaths as the projected casualties of Operation Downfall (Depending on the scope and context), for American forces ranged from 220,000 to several million, and estimates of Japanese military and civilian casualties ran from the millions to the tens of millions.
Hiryu, like Soryu, were newer carriers. They were faster but less armored. They were more fragile and less likely to be able to absorb a hit. A hit was more likely to be fatal. Hiryu had no chance of survival after being hit with four bombs in the forward third of the ship. Her sinking was a foregone conclusion.
Considering how expensive a carrier pilot is- in terms of money, time and resources; how difficult they were to replace, the way that the Japanese Naval airman approached their tasks is nothing less than idiotic. They approached battle as if they were finely-tuned Ferraris in a demolition derby. Ugaki's temper tantrum is so precious. "Those Americans aren't playing by the rules!! They're supposed to steam west so we can sink them!! Where's the umpire?
