Herzog and de Meuron designed the CaixaForum in Madrid that opened in 2008.
This cultural center is located in a former power station and hosts temporary exhibits and cultural events. A vertical garden faces the square and the the brick mass appears to float above the ground drawing people to pass beneath. The stone plinth was removed and metal panels are added above the existing brick facade. The interior is opened up with a stair connecting the stack of spaces.
For something to drink and eat, try the Forum’s restaurant or El Patio Vertical across the street where you can watch the activity in the plaza.
Be sure to see the CaixaForum when you are in Madrid.
