CIty transport in Hagen in the German federal state of Nordrhein-Westfalen is provided by Hagener Straßenbahn AG. This is the former tram company of Hagen. Nowadays, trams are no more in service but only buses, mainly Diesel buses built by Mercedes, Solaris, and MAN. There are also two Diesel hybrid buses (articulated buses) built by Hess - known as manufacturer of trolley buses - from Switzerland. Their middle and rear wheels are covered and they have also got an extension on the roof, covering the roof-mounted electric equipment - so they look really different compared to the other buses.
in the addition to the information provided by Hess you can find a description of the buses on the website of Dresdner Verkehrsbetriebe (dvb.de), they use similar buses. The buses have got a serial hybrid drive train. A Diesel engine with 220 kW drives a generator with 190 kW power output, the combustion engine does not drive the wheels directly. The middle and rear axle of the bus are each driven by a 120 kW electric motor. The buses have got an energy buffer consisting of supercaps (capacitors) on the roof. They are charged during braking or by the generator and can provide energy during acceleration.
