Hammering in pegs, and then having to pull them out of the ground can be a total pain - if you’re looking for an easier way to pitch your tent or shelter, then the range of drillable pegs from Hex Pegs will be right up your street.
These unique pegs can be removed and inserted in just a couple of seconds with an impact driver, or electric or cordless drill. The robust design features a steel threaded body, rubber grommet and stainless-steel washer with a hook attachment to secure the guy rope.
In this video, our gear guru Ben tells us all about the Hex Peg range, demonstrates how to use them, shows you a comparison of conventional heavy duty pegs vs hex pegs, which drill has the best torque to use it with, and discusses the limitations of these pegs plus more - so watch above for all the details.

We bought a bunch of these -- flat ones for around the tent, and the hook pegs for our guy ropes. Since we have a large canvas airframe tent (Zempire Fortress V2), once we get the four corners down, my wife goes around screwing them down as I'm pumping up the tent. Our process is pretty efficient and fast now thanks to these!

Consider rounding all edges to prevent cutting skin, which could be a severe cut with movement pressure. The tie-down may also be able to be designed below the flat mount without a above ground metal hazard. Thank you.

Which edges are you referring to, Dan? I'm sure the designers put various versions to the test, I'm not sure exactly why they ended up with this design though. ~ Ben

Just to expensive for what is essentially a bolt. Bunnings sell 300mm landscape construction screws for $3.35.

I ride a motorcycle, so I can’t carry a drill. Have you got them in with a ratchet/spanner?
@SnowysOutdoors
@SnowysOutdoors Год назад
I don't personally know anyone who uses a ratchet/spanner, but cant see any reason why you couldn't. Just might obviously be abit more effort in super hard ground. ~ Lauren

Can you use a manual hand drill?
@SnowysOutdoors
@SnowysOutdoors 4 года назад
I guess you could, Paul. I haven't tried it though, so I'm not sure what the net difference in effort is between a hand drill versus a mallet to belt a standard peg into the ground. ~ Ben

What's it like on hard pitches ?
@SnowysOutdoors
@SnowysOutdoors 2 года назад
It's easier than belting a peg in the ground with a hammer when it comes to hard ground, Kieron, but everything has its limits and I've no doubt there will be some ground that just isn't going to accept a tent peg. ~ Ben

How do you attach a spring tensioner to the hex head , the cleat is not designed with this in mind.
@SnowysOutdoors
@SnowysOutdoors Месяц назад
The hex pegs with the hook top are the ones to use with a spring tensioner, they should just slip over with abit of manoeuvring - we've tried them out before. ~ Lauren

Can you drill them into tree stumps?
@SnowysOutdoors
@SnowysOutdoors 3 года назад
I guess you could if your drill was burly enough, Angie, but we don't recommend this. If everyone started drilling into tree stumps we'd very quickly destroy the environment around our campsites. ~ Ben
@angieg9361
@angieg9361 3 года назад
@@SnowysOutdoors oh yes, I should clarify, I meant stumps where trees have been logged. We have a few on our farm and thought about setting up for our kids to play under the rain.
@SnowysOutdoors
@SnowysOutdoors 3 года назад
@@angieg9361I'm sure you could do this, but you'd probably need to pre-drill pilot holes. They are essentially a large coachscrew, so your drill will need a bit of torque to drive them into the timber. I've never tried this before though. ~ Ben

How do they do in sandy soil?
@SnowysOutdoors
@SnowysOutdoors 2 года назад
About as good as any other peg of similar size, the ridges can't really grab in sand unless it is wet. You'd be best using longer stakes for sandy ground. ~ Ben

You're only saving yourself 5-10 secs. 1 min at most. Maybe if it were impossible to hammer the peg in the soil, then it's worth it.

Yeah, they aren't for me, I'm happy to belt pegs in the ground. I've found that it's often those who have bad backs or not enough strength two swing a hammer that like the Hex Pegs as the drill ends up doing most of the work. They are significantly more expensive than regular pegs though. ~ Ben

I'm disabled and find that they're much easier to get in AND out of the ground because my driver does all the work, it's also quicker and quieter for those times I got lost and got to the site later than I wanted. Mine are for use on medium to hard ground
