Today we are venturing into new territory and are all about hexagons and hexagon quilting. Our crazy quilt and patchwork tutorials have been popular, if you have not seen them you can catch them here:
• Patchwork and quilting...
Quilting is a craft that we really have wanted to explore more as it is a lot of fun!
Some time ago we received hexagons from Kate ‪@thelasthomelyhouse‬ in the mail, it was such a nice gesture of Kate to send us the hexagons. Since then we have been planning what type of hexagon quilting project we should do with the hexagons. As they were a gift we wanted to do something really special.
You all know that we are big fans of thrift stores, upcycling and repurposing items, and that put us on a thought. In this tutorial we show you how we reuse old embroidered table cloths to start a beautiful hexagon quilting project.

Of course we all love Kate ))))) She is us. Thank you for rescuing damaged embroideries to make into Hexagon quilt. There are beautiful textiles that cannot be restored, but they can be rescued for this )))). Splendid idea )))). Another Kate on the other side of the ocean.

I LOVE how you've taken this in a new direction! Have you guys got a vertical design board to pin your hexies up so you can create a design? I can cut you more templates when you run out of those - I have more children's books! I have just finished my granddaughters quilt - it took me three years - so you take your time! much love xxx Kate

Synchronicity! I am sorting the pieces from the jigsaw puzzle I just got from Kate while I watch you two having fun with her hexagons. At the same time I am soaking some sweaters I just inherited. They were made by my grandmother (who died in 2000) for my aunt (who just died this past October at the age of 96). I am sure they are over 30 years old. I am the keeper of the family textiles, including the embroidered table runners, as no one else is very interested in them. I'm honored by the position! You two and Kate add so much to our lives by keeping our hands busy with beautiful and happy things. Please never stop! ❤❤❤

Several years ago my sister-in-law jumped up from the table saying "you're crafty, this would be something interesting to you" and came back in the kitchen with a box of things she found and brought home. In the box were many scraps of fabric and also a small bag with a few pieces of fabric sewn together and written on with pen. It was a quilting lesson by someone to teach someone else how to sew the fabrics together. They had written on the fabric, this much seam allowance and so on. My sister-in-law gave me the whole box and many, many months later I had a quilt made with all the fabrics in the box in honour of the lady I never knew but felt so connected to during that time. I did the exact same thing you are doing now. A hexagonal quilt in English paper piecing. It is on my bed right now and I will be crawling under it tonight. Thank you for reminding me of that lovely, slightly sad time. I hope that lady knows that someone loved and felt inspired by her efforts.

Arne, to eliminate paper clips and hand stitching, you can use a fabric glue stick which is readily available in craft stores. It just makes the process easier and faster. You only need a very small amount on each edge and the paper template will pull out and can be used several more times.

I love working with hexagons. I started patchworking back in the early l950s using this method and a large bag of 1930/40s dressmaking scraps. I was 12 years old! I actually never finished that project but I did it again in the 70s also with a large bag of scraps saved from being thrown into landfill and I made a circular skirt which I wore for many years. I I continued with hexagons for a few years, and enjoyed using the fabric patterns to create other designs as you are doing here. I am so looking forward to following this project. And the paper hexagons are definitely worthy of preserving in a scrapbook too. The paperclips are a great idea! 😀❤
