Hey everyone! In this week's episode of my Hey Arnold! Character Analysis Series, I'm going to analyze Curly aka Thaddeus Gammelthorpe! Curly was a 4th grade student at PS 118. He was a bit of an outcast and was considered one of the "geeks". Even though he was a supporting character, he was probably one of the most memorable ones.
Curly's whacky and outrageous ideas and schemes throughout the series got him labelled as the "crazy one". In this video, I analyze Curly's crazy plots, his personality, development, relationships and more! If you like this video, be sure to give it a thumbs up and subscribe for more!

In the episode where Rhonda was throwing her "Cool people party", and separated the kids by cool or geek, I remember Phoebe looking up the definition of geek. She said it was, "Someone who bites the heads off of chickens as a circus show act." One of the kids then says, "Only Curly did that." To which Curly responded, "Yeah, and only once." I feel like no one talks about this enough.

@RanterInShades

I think you hit the nail on the head with where his infatuation with Rhonda comes from. I think of it like how in Helga on the Couch, her love for Arnold was rooted in the fact that he was the first person to show her genuine kindness. That pretty much happens in Rhonda's Glasses, where she stood up for Curly when no one else would, leading him to want a closer relationship with her.
@DialUpDigest
@DialUpDigest 3 года назад
Thank you! 😊 Oh ya, good point! Curly fell for Rhonda because she made such a grand gesture of kindness that helped him like probably no one else ever did. It's just like how Arnold complimented Helga on her bow and then gave her his cracker. He was so kind to her and no one else gave her that kind of attention before. I never realized it, but Curly and Helga both had that in common - they were obsessed with characters who did something special for them.

Been waiting for this. He may be a psycho but Thaddeus/ Curly is arguably one of the most entertaining character in the series. Between framing Eugene taking Arnold hostage he does crazy things and its for such petty reasons. Of course there was the famous let the animals free from the zoo scene and even in the jungle movie he was quick to side with La Sobra when they were captured who refused even calling Curly too crazy even for him and when the movie’s villain calls you too much that speaks volumes. I honestly could see Rhonda and him as a couple they actually have something in common: attitude. Rhonda is the traditional stuck up haughty type while Curly is chaotic you don’t know if he’s going to kill you or kiss you I think he was inspired by Rhonda’s rise up speech to act on impulse it was always their she just gave him direction.
@DialUpDigest
@DialUpDigest 3 года назад
😊 I think he was one of the most entertaining characters as well. You just didn't know what he was going to say or do. His behavior was always outrageous, like when he used a jetpack and flew out of a classroom, let the animals out of the zoo, held the school hostage...I think him and Rhonda would have been a nice couple if he wasn't so creepy and obsessive about her. I think it would be an unhealthy relationship. While I do agree they have similar personalities in terms of being strong-willed and determined. I don't know how much of Curly's chaotic nature Rhonda could handle - she seems like a very strict, rich kid with very clear do's and don'ts, (like in the episode, "Rhonda goes broke" she was devastated by having to compromise her life and expectations). I think he would embarrass her. I agree, I think Rhonda's speech gave Curly that final push and made it easy for him to act.

Similar to Briany, you can tell something was going on with Curly. Character wise, I think Curly’s craziness was used to differentiate him from Brainy in a similar but different way. Different is their personalities, but similar is term something else was going. However, due the lack of exposure and awareness, back then, of conditions like autism and any condition that causes severe social anxiety (Briany’s case) and extreme behavior (Curly), it was hard to address, let know how to interact, with people who had something let that because they fully explain that, which is why Briany barely talked and Curly would go to extremes. If they do a revival, I wish they would better address: 1. The stalking tendencies that Briany and Curly did, notably towards Helga and Rhonda, respectively. 2. Whatever conditions that Briany and Curly have, to better create that awareness and if being written off as a freak (Curly) or unsettling (Brainy)
@DialUpDigest
@DialUpDigest 2 года назад
Yes, I think there had to have been something going on with Curly and Brainy. As a kid I thought they were just weird. But now, because I'm aware of conditions like autism spectrum disorders, mental illnesses, etc. I can see how maybe these characters had something that can explain their behaviors. The kids in the show behaved just like kids in real life would if they interacted with kids who seemed different. The lack of awareness caused these kids to be misunderstood and judged. I like how the kids in Hey Arnold never really excluded Curly or Brainy. They still played with them, even though sometimes there were comments made about their behaviors behind their backs. I agree, if there is a revival, I'd love to see an explanation for Curly and Brainy's behaviors. Perhaps Brainy has Selective Mutism possibly among other conditions. I think Curly may be on the Autism spectrum.

Curly is the quintessential grievance collector. To him, minor instances of annoyance are major slights, or extreme insults to his ego. He mentally collects these "slights", keeping tabs on the "guilty" parties, then eventually succumbs to his delusional anger and goes berserk. This is most evident in the episode where he shouts "injustices" from a bullhorn while barricaded in the utility closet.
@DialUpDigest

Curly did have extreme consequences for others when he felt slighted. It shows how everyone reacts differently to the actions of others, and while something may seem inconsequential to one, it may be a huge offense to someone else.

whats great about this show's characters is that , they look like stereotypical at first but as the show goes on we see interesting details about them. and this show just brings nostalgia for me , it feels like summer of my childhood building gundam toys and watching shows on my little tv.

Wow, this is was a lot more edited than your usual analysis videos. I'm glad to see you're improving greatly with your editting. I also appreciate the more in-depth analysis than your usual videos. I think what I like most about analysis is being able to create theories around patterns of characters. I didn't want to say it in your earlier videos because you were just starting out and I didn't want to discourage you, but I thought your earlier videos lacked something in the analysis. I just thought in your earlier work you just kind of went surface level on the characters and what they did in the episode and didn't delve into the subtext as much as you could of for some characters. I'm a sucker for theories and headcanons though and I assume you wanted to have the facts as they stand instead of going deep into speculation. I feel that in the Curly video you're starting to get the hang of analysis and delving into possibilities of why characters are the way they are. I look forward to future videos and fingers crossed on that Edmund episode (XD) Before I end my comment here are my thoughts on Curly. I think Curly was already heading that path of being the way he is due to a disorder of some kind, but Rhonda helped move it along faster. I mean Curly bit the head of a chicken once offscreen (as said in Cool Party) and that's very concerning. In the episode, "Helga Blabs It All" Curly seems to have memorized the schedule of the Jolly Olly Man to call out the randomness of him showing up at Sunset Arms. That's something you would expect Harold to do more than Curly. Maybe Curly just really wants to know when he can get his licorice sticks before anyone else? ("Ransom")
@DialUpDigest
@DialUpDigest 3 года назад
Thank you for your feedback! 👍 Looking back, at times I agree that I could have gone more in-depth with some characters. I think now I'm starting to get the hang of structuring my videos so that I can add in more subtext into them, instead of just covering surface level details only. I have a lot more video ideas about more in-depth topics relating to Hey Arnold! that I plan on making (Maybe even an Edmund video soon??), so stay tuned! 😊 Yes, I think Curly's psychological state was definitely a factor as well. He may have just been prone to behaving in unexpected ways do to that and then Rhonda's actions in "Rhonda's Glasses" just pushed him over the edge.

I think there are two possibilities. Either he was inspired by Rhonda and later gave up and calmed down or we look at a deeper issue you touched upon. Diane Cook the comedian did a bit where he talked about how there's always a weird creepy guy somewhere in your life. He explains a lot of the time you work with that guy. He further explains that nobody talks to that guy. But Diane will talk to that guy, he'd find him on purpose and have chit chats with him. Be nice to him give him candy to make him happy. You know why he talks to that guy? When that day finally comes where he just SNAPS and he comes into work with a sawed off shot gun killing everybody. When he finally gets to Diane he's going to take a deep breath pause and say under his breath, "thanks for the candy" and skips Diane, and continues on his rampage. You might laugh at the idea now but you know when you get to work your going to be like "hey curly, how was your weekend, you good, good I'm good, everything is good, see you at start time. So talk to that guy. Befriend him. It could back fire so be carful. If he becomes obsessed with you your in trouble.

My favorite moment is in the episode of curly snaps when he hogs all the balls and held himself up in the principal's office and even got arnold into the situation so the reason was he wanted to become ball monitor and Mr simmons had picked another student instead of him me simmons didn't realize that curly was truly the one to become ball monitor next after sid i thought that was crazy lol 😆 and there is another episode that I like of curly called false alarm is when there was like a meeting going on between the students to figure out who pulled the fire alarm 🚨 and everyone had there theories until curly had finally admitted to what he had done and than the principal have him detention for it that was funny 🤣 curly is one of my favorite characters on hey arnold

The episode "Curly Snaps" was really intense 😨. I feel a little bad for him though because at first he tried to explain to Mr. Simmons how it was his turn but Mr. Simmons didn't double check. If he did, this whole problem could have been avoided. Of course, that's no excuse for what Curly did. I like how he randomly involved Arnold into the situation, lol. He knew Arnold was trustworthy. I liked listening to the kids' theories in False Alarm. Meanwhile, Curly was sitting silently knowing the truth 😳. Curly was so unpredictable it made him one of the most entertaining in my opinion 😆

I don't think curly went crazy through Rhonda I think he was always crazy yet psychologically given the fact that he took revenge on Eugene for sharpening his pencil down to the metal parts of the Eraser. I will say he kind of fits the description as Roger Smith from American Dad I mean Roger Smith is a real psychopath who goes as far to plot horrible unforgiving revenge's on the Smiths or anybody for that matter like there are a few episodes I can name where Roger goes incredibly too far. Like one Steve eats a cookie Roger tell Steve that he was adopted kidnapped by Stan and Francine. In another episode where Stan killed a hundred people his conscience doesn't want him killing anymore instead Roger tells him I have a better way for you to get your ability to kill back. By going kill some random stranger that says deserves to die. As Roger revealed the man who deserve to die all this cycle of Vengeance was about him having the last donut when he offered to share a piece with him. Let's face it Roger Smith from American Dad is a real psychopath. Curly at a young age is just the beginning unless he is given some real help like immediately he's going to end up like Roger Smith.

To be a little fair to Curly at least he asked Ronda for an lock of her hair. Unlike Helga who creepily collected Arnold's used bubble gum for her shrine. 😂 I mean he at least he asked consent that's a little better and little more innocent. I do believe Curly is heading in two directions either one he gets help and develops into a more well rounded yet kind of quirky young man.... or he'll end up prison or the mental hospital after going full blown crazy. I do wonder how different things would have been had Curly developed a crush on one of the other girls? It would have been interesting to see him have an crush on Helga or even someone like Phoebe. Though I always felt Phoebe would take a calm and rational approach to him and help him get to help or to Doctor Bliss....
