i used to be an admin on this wiki like a year ago, and the plagiarism problem has always been so crazy. we had another admin that would straight up copy and paste pages from inkipedia, and we still kept them? how crazy is that

In my own experience, FANDOM itself has housed its own dirty plagiarists, who make it worse by being paid for their swindling. Remember that time they mandated company-produced videos on top of articles all over the English side of the farm, that editors had no control over? Yeah, they just jacked other people's content for it. I tracked down a few and none had given permission. One even had an ANIMATION he made-not gameplay!- stolen, and thanks to my warning, had them take it down. I wanted to compile a bigger document on the phenomenon but never got around to. So what i'm saying is... FANDOM staff and editors can be a match made in hell, sometimes.

inkipedia user here, and i'm glad to see finally someone talk about splatoon fandom. it was always a little suspicous that i could check the internet for something, accidentally click on fandom, and then immediately notice oddly similar details and notes once i clicked back on (or just remembered) inkipedia. honestly this situation is way more of a demotivation to contribute than anything, as i don't think fandom of all sites cares about crap, but your efforts have been appreciated. stay fresh!

Man I remember helping to put the music section together for Splatoon 3 when the game first released cause I wanted to learn how to edit wikis. It was fun, but I didn't stick around as a long term editor. Crazy to think some of my work could've been stolen and I would've had no idea.

For some context on these massive byte changes: I once single-handedly restructured, streamlined, and significantly rewrote the Wikipedia article for "GCSE" (a type of school examination in the UK). This edit touched almost every sentence and section of the article in some way, and resulted in a reduction of 8886-byte change in one go. The entire project all-told, across 16 edits, was -9274 bytes, of which -3936 were from removing an entire comparison table off the page and into its own template page. 3000 and even 9000 byte additions to a page DO NOT come out of nowhere.

My question is: What is the point of The Fandom Splatoon Wiki even existing if it's just going to be a cheap mirror of Inkipedia? For two wikis on the same topic to justify themselves existing, the provided information in each needs to be different enough to *need* both (EG one can be a straight technical stat analysis of a weapon, the other hardly skims that and focuses on visual design of the weapon). If One is just an incomplete version of the other, why does it exist? Though, this problem may not even exist if Fandom just let wikis larger than 5 pages shut down. Edit to add: They split off almost 10 years ago now, there's zero reason the fandom wiki even has editors left because it was done so early on. Genuinely why are people editing on fandom at all?

The worst part is this kind of thing will never go away completely. As long as the fandom wiki exists, its SEO and self-promotion will make sure new people will stumble upon it. But because anyone who joins who is actually interested in creating and maintaining a useful wiki will eventually find the real wiki and leave, what you're left with is the kind of people who for some reason are willing to just plagiarize content from the real wiki. And the fandom wiki /will/ continue to exist, as fandom will not allow you to delete a wiki that generates ad revenue.

Fandom as an entire wiki site is garbage from the ground up, im not surprised that it's rampant with plagiarism

This isnt meant to be an "us vs them" comment, so do forgive me if it comes across that way. People can use whatever website they like. HOWEVER, I don't know why anyone would ever willingly use fandom wikias when there are other fantastic non-fandom wikias for people to use. Inkipedia, UESP, etc. Free yourself, break away from fandom and use independently hosted wikias!

before i installed a mod to hide fandom in search results (after the minecraft wiki left fandom), i would sometimes accidentally end up on splatoon fandom rather than inkipedia. every single page was almost word-for-word, with fandom always a couple weeks behind. i assumed at the time they must be maintained by the same people... guess not lol

I was always weary of Splatoon Fandom Wiki whenever I'm looking up information about the game. Inkipedia always was the better resource and its so sad that in order for them to 'compete' they had to steal from your work. Shame on them.

the tally hall community has a very similar issue, with a Miraheze(?) wiki stealing from the Tally Hallmanac's pages instead of a Fandom wiki-- Good to see you shedding some light on an issue like this!!

The Limbus Company community is going through something similar. Their solution is, because all the original admins of the fandom wiki left for the community one, to simply change all the plagiarized stuff to something else (after all, anybody can edit a wiki). Then whenever someone pops up somewhere confused as to why something on fandom is obviously very very incorrect, ppl explain the situation and direct them to the real wiki.

I knew Fandom was a dumpster fire but gods damn. The splatoon wiki has helped me track down specifics on side order color chips since I finally got it recently. Thanks for the work you do

I had already noticed how the Fandom Wiki had seemingly copy-pasted Inkipedia articles and am glad you're talking action against them.

You put this video together very well considering this kind of content being out of your comfort zone. The pacing is good and you focus on key examples and go straight to the point with explanations.

As if Fandom wasn't enough of a blight on the internet, the fact that this is an issue on not just Splatoon Wiki but SO MANY of their wikis is incredibly frustrating. Thanks for your work, Trig.

Same issue with Wikimon (Digimon Wiki) and TFWiki (Transformers Wiki). TFWiki crushes its plagarising Fandom page, of course, and said Fandom page can't compete with or replicate its unique structure that indulges in and encourages humorous comments from the contrubutors and editors (they try to steal it all, but the pages end up half empty because they can't format it the same way). Wikimon, unfortunately, shows up secondary to its Fandom equivalent despite being a much better resource with functional and up to date links. The Digimon Fandom Wiki doesn't have the same fantastic organisation that Wikimon has either, lacking its neat tabs and aesthetics as well as proper formatting for each mon's extensive evolutionary trees. What Fandom _does_ have is the slight advantage of using the English adaptation names over the Japanese ones that Wikimon defaults to, so they tend to appear higher in the English results for that reason as well. Still, Wikimon is leagues superior and has dedicated fans constantly working on it.

Hey, I’m not an editor on any Splatoon wikis, but I am one on a self hosted Shin Megami Tensei wiki. Your frustrations was totally understandable, and while the wiki I’m working on had an opposite issue where the Fandom counterpart has the most information available but lacks the sources/references needed to back up + sometimes contains misinformation, plagiarism sucks and I always made sure whatever I put on the wiki has a reliable source and was written on my own. The Inkipedia is totally my go-to place to just see what Splatoon is up to nowadays, and I’m very impressed of it. I aspire our wiki to be as clean as you guys one day

Even back when it was Wikia, I associated Fandom with low quality content. From the quality of the writing to the design of the platform, Fandom has always been inferior to self-hosted wikis and even other wiki-hosting platforms. Sadly, some of the franchises I follow only have wikis on Fandom and I'm certain any push to fork the wikis would be an uphill battle given how high the Fandom wikis would appear in search engines.

Mentally cheered a little at the section on banning plagiarizers from Inkipedia and making sure the reverse wasn't happening either. It's always good to see actual moderation online when so many platforms just use bots now. Huge amount of respect for the determination to get this stuff taken down - it sucks that you have to do this, but I wonder how many people just wouldn't even bother. I hope you don't have to fight too hard to get this resolved o7 I've been poking around at a Fandom wiki and seeing plagiarized content is just soul-crushing. (For example, a decent few pages on the Imagine Dragons wiki are just... straight copy-pasted from Wikipedia, not even removing the citation numbers) In my head I go - what do you gain from this? Why are you making this wiki page if you don't enjoy writing? Why can't you just write it poorly, or not at all, if you think your writing is bad enough that you have to steal? It takes all the joy out of seeing a big page. Immediately I go - well, this one is longer than 3 sentences, I may as well see if it's got a Wikipedia page. No monetary gain from stealing for Fandom wikis, no real benefit, and it sure doesn't gain them any friends. The motivation for people to do this is just indecipherable to me.

I've noticed that some fandom wiki Splatoon pages have the same descriptions as the Inkipedia ones but less detailed in different areas, so I've been using Inkipedia as my go to Nice to know how all that happened though. I didn't know "Wiki plagiarism" was a thing. The whole "Open-sourcing of knowledge" and "You can't copyright facts" thing. I didn't take into account the wholesale copy-pasting of articles. If you're going to transplant knowledge between wikis, at least take the time to write it how you think it should be written.

Inkipedia is absolutely invaluable to fans and players of this series-- I do a lot of writing and art about Splatoon and I'm always checking this wiki for information, references and pictures. You guys are taking care of something super great, and it's astonishing to see such petty plagiarism going on here. Fandom wikis are dumpster fires, speaking as someone who maintains one for an EarthBound/MOTHER series fangame. It's a messy platform and I'm no fan of it, but I don't have the resources to migrate so I'm just kind of stuck on it, lol. It's never something people should willingly use if there's superior alternatives.

Great job shining light on some of the issues with the mentality of some (again, *some*, not all) Fandom editors. As I know you're aware, I've had some of my own content on Pikipedia stolen by Fandom editors, so again, it is great to see someone standing up for people like me. Amazing video!

I might be biased, but Inkipedia has ALWAYS been my go-to source, fandom always had a weird feel about it and it was significantly more tedious to navigate... It's a genuinely so sad that this kind of stuff has been happening (even if some examples are absurdly funny for how obvious they are), but I'm glad that you made a video addressing it! The Inkipedia staff is WAY too dedicated to have their work thrown aside and copied like that. (By the way, love your delivery, you're really funny, for your first long video this is great)

spreading useful information is good, the point of a wiki is to be helpful to its users not to compete with other wikis.

Hello 🙋 I'm PeacockFeatheredRaccoon, one of the content moderators and bureaucrats, and I've been editing [mostly manga character pages] for almost a year now I never considered the Fandom wiki be a "rival" to Inkipedia (like other wikis might), but it's sad that it's being known as "the plagarism wiki" I've warned people about it before but, and I know it's also partially my fault and others for not doing something other than a warning about it, it's upsetting that the main editing staff member has been doing so much plagarism. I might be able to look through pages and removed plagarized content, but now that I have school again and a job I might not get to that much I'll talk to other staff today about what to do with them UPDATE: The main plagiarizer has been removed from the staff team and blocked

I have a friend who likes to write walkthroughs and primarily posts on strategy wiki and someone from Fandom wiki flat out stole an entire wiki he made, thankfully when he went to Fandom to have the pages removed they did. As far as I'm aware that game never got another Fandom wiki page. Since I found out about the plagiarism problem on Fandom I've been a lot more conscious of which wiki I use when I need to look up information for a game.

I may be kinda r̶e̶t̶i̶r̶e̶d̶ Preoccupied (is more accurate) as right now as an editor but I'm glad the discord deiced to put an @everyone tag on dc, this is very good content! The editing style really reminds me of technoblade, im pretty sure I was weeping when he died. so this video really made my day.

I feel a lot of people will be like it's just a wiki who cares, but it shows a level of disrespect for the time and effect of others that's just incredibly rude, if it was by random editors whatever, anyone can edit a wiki and the admins just didn't realize it was stolen but the fact a large number of admins are participating in it, is just baffling

First of all, thank you and the staff for making such a beautiful and wonderous place for people to learn about Splatoon! I use it to read about my favorite characters (mainly Marina) and learning more and more about them makes me feel closer to the game than ever before! Second, I hope that your efforts are rewarded and the Fandom wiki is forced to redo all of that work they stole from all of you. Having your works stolen like that, stings like a wasp sting. All that hard work, just to be taken by someone that's too lazy to do their own work...that's pretty cruel, ya know? Hi there, i wanna say thanks to you and the other contributors for tirelessly collecting data and facts all over Splatoon media into one place. I read the wiki a lot, i love the trivias and pictures, been doing it since i was on elementary school. The only thing i like about Fandom is that readers can post comment on individual pages, that's it though. I'm not supporting the plagiarism (i'm also confused on why there should be 2 wikis on the first place). Keep up the good work, you guys.✨

I have an unpleasant question: What are you going to do about it? A callout only works when someone can be bent by social pressure. Most likely Fandom will utterly ignore you. If they don't stop, which I fully assume they won't (if anything, this might very well galvanize them), do you actually intend to force the issue? I don't like asking this question, but a lifetime of experience has taught me that there are bad people who, once they've chosen a course of action, will not stop unless physically incapable of doing so. This seems like one of those times.

i've never understood the point of plagiarizing. it's better, and more fun, to write your own stuff. but plagiarizing THAT MUCH? i don't think i can even comprehend the idea of that. also i really like your editing style!! having not too many moving things is really nice because i end up getting distracted by it and not listening to the video for like 3 minutes and then i have to rewind. i would love to see more videos by you in the future!!

Oh, hey Trig, fancy seeing a vid from you in my recommended. CanvasK from SmashWiki. Just about everything you talked about between the NIWA and Fandom Splatoon wikis is true for the Smash wikis. 1, entire articles being copied. In one case I saw it was for trophies which had notes at the bottom that were verbatim what we had. Sometimes it was just a few sections. 2, images being copied. Why would they have the taunts, idle poses, and on-screen appearances on different stages? Because we did it! (most were done by different people and we don't have a standard really). And I can prove some of them were stolen because I have the original video files that the GIFs came from. 3, being done by higher ups. There's really only 1 or 2 staff members there, but I know one of them is the one who stole the on-screen appearance GIFs. 4, policy pages. Ok, they didn't steal those from us, but some clearly haven't been read by them. Some have notice banners that are white text on yellow background with a broken image. We have a notice template for if we have stuff that is mostly from Wikipedia (because some of the stuff you can't really say differently) and I'm sure Fandom does too. But I saw somewhere one their wiki that they have a notice template basically saying "Yeah, we copied from ssbwiki. Their license says we can as long as we credit. This is the credit." and I think it was only used once.

if I remember correctly "bring etched into DNA" is exact wording used in official sources so it doesn't seem unreasonable to me that both would use it. I might be wrong tho. 6:45

I never liked fandom that much anyways. Inkipedia always has the info I need so I always go there instead of fandom (if I'm going to the splatoon fandom wiki, I probably wasn't paying attention, because the information always felt lower quality compared to inkipedia). If fandom refuses to take it down (because we know for sure the splatoon fandom wiki's not going to), there is case to be made that Fandom could be intentionally choosing to silently endorse plagiarism in an attempt to punish wiki editors who forked away from fandom.

I'm assuming you don't want to go down this route if possible, but just out of curiosity, given that they've broken the terms of the Creative Commons License does that mean you could file a copyright claim against them?

Oh, something I meant to ask. At 15:15 you say "Deleted, not just removed". Elsewhere in the video you use "remove(d)". Would you be willing to explain the distinction? If I had to guess, it means that you don't want simple "revert" edits so that the plagiarism remains in the articles' history, but complete rollback past those edits, or even page deletion?

what is crazy is that I recently found out that the Pikmin wikis have the opposite problem because I learned that the wiki information was poor quality and I was told the non fandom wiki editors "work very hard" you look inside and it is all just plagiarism...
