After the Vortex video got blocked, I've been hesitant about doing live versions of songs so I went with the official video for Teacher, Teacher. This was incredible.

Tatiana said about this song quote "The idea behind the song is about people that dictate their agenda by means of their status, position, or just their Internet claim to fame in order to impose their opinion on to others but those opinions aren't based on experience nor knowledge." so its not aimed even at religion particularly just at anyone who speaks an oppinion on a topic and tries to impose it on others witout good knowledge.

Yes. Her lyrics is very often allegorical. So it's not about an actual school or teachers (catholic or otherwise), it's more the "school of life" with its multitude of self-proclaimed "preachers".

Yes and no. There are clear and overt references to religion in the lyrics. While it may not be SOLELY about religion and it still applies in all those other arenas, I think it's also to highlight that within the religious structure this type of thing is too prevalent. It can go both ways.

Hmm that's interesting. I didn't realize Eugene used anything out of the ordinary. I'll have to check that out. In general Jinjer usually tune their guitars to Drop A, which is AEADG on the bass. The four high strings are just like regular A440 tuning, then you drop the lowest string a full step. Eugene often uses basses with fanned frets, aka multi-scale. This gives better tension on that low A string when it's tuned down low like that. It is pretty wiggly though!

You should watch the interview that Elisabeth of The Charismatic Voice did with Tatiana. She said that the other three come up with the instrumental music in a way that she finds completely tedious, so she doesn't take part in it. Instead, she gets demos of the songs, and (after a lot of procrastination) she comes up with vocal lines and lyrics that she writes *in Russian*!! After that, she translates the lyrics to English that in some magical way fall into place with rhymes and all. Amazing!

Her process is kinda magical. It doesn't seem like it should work at all--but listen to the results! She actually FORGETS HOW TO SCREAM if she doesn't do it all the time. She has to relearn it every time, and she says it comes back differently each time. Say what?! She said she actually liked it better before than it is now. She'll probably have to do it again for this new album! Tatiana is a unicorn, and I intend to see them live as many times as possible. It's jaw dropping, and God knows how long she can keep that up. I pray it's for many more decades. They tour hard, and she does not warm up or do anything special to take care of her voice. I almost wish I could send her to Melissa Cross, the "screaming coach to the stars." Bless and keep you, Tati!

@ericpeterson7512
@ericpeterson7512 3 месяца назад
Yeah Drop A is just regular A440 tuning, but with the low B string dropped a full step to A. AEADG. It's specifically for 5-string basses and 7-string guitars (some guitarists tune 6-strings that way too). Like Drop-D but on a 5-string. The rest of the strings have regular tension, and the use of multi-scale guitars helps the tension on that low string, for both guitar and bass. Eugene hits that low A hard, though, and I'm pretty sure he has quite low action, so it sometimes rattles and grinds, like in the first few notes of this song. It's an awesome sound. I keep my action as low as possible for the same reason: I love that grind! I learned it from Geddy!

The tuning of the guitar is probably Drop-A (A-E-a-D-F♯-B). But you can't just detune a standard guitar! The strings would flop around like wet pasta. You basically have to add a very thick string for the low A and move all other one space down. Also for a defined and crisp tone, it helps to have a lot longer scale, that would be called a baritone guitar. If you look closely, you'll notice that Roman is playing a custom built fan-fretted guitar with o longer scale at the bass side, and a standard scale at at the treble. It's the best of both worlds with good definition for the tick strings and smaller string spacing for chords and soloing at the thin strings.

I wish the backwards stick debate went on at our church. We play in a 100+ yr old sanctuary and we do everything to keep the drums from overwhelming everything else. Hotrods or brushes, shields around the cymbals. At least we got rid of the full fish tank drum cage.... Another great reaction thanks, Matt.
@teckreactions
@teckreactions 3 месяца назад
Fish tank drum cage isn't terrible. Our church has four campuses and each one has a different way of treating the drums depending on the space it's in. Sometimes you just have to tell the drummers, "hold your stick the right way and play a little lighter." If they're not making it about the overall experience for the congregants and insist they know what's best for the drums to come through, they're not there for the right reason.
@goldenkurlz
@goldenkurlz 3 месяца назад
@@teckreactions I agree 100%. We have the fortunate circumstance if having a ton of talented people who are all in a great head and heart space when it comes to LEADING worship (as opposed to playing worship or performing). Unfortunately, that cage was hot as all get out, you could barely see out of it, and it was barely big enough for a full kit plus mics and stands. And then we had to squeeze the drummer in there. Also, as a bass player, not being able to feel the drums next to me and only hear them in ear made me hate the cage. They do have their place, though.

Nice reaction, Jinjer lyrics are always pretty deep and meaningful and often tackle authoritarianism (check out Home Back which has a Bossa Nova section) but also mental well-being (as you have found with Pisces, Vortex and Perennial). As a suggestion you might want to try out Aric Improto’s play through of Copper Wasp. Also check out Matt Gastka’s play through or Red Misso or Monomyth and anything by Gojira with Mario Duplantier. Prog metal has some epic drummers including Brann Dailor of Mastodon and Baard Koltstad of Leprous (not as heavy as the name suggests) plus the Goat of polyrhythms Danny Carey of Tool. "I'd have to see how wiggly their strings are" 😂😂😂 I'm gonna have to keep that one and use it! I've got wiggly strings!! Ha! I never noticed that offbeat trash China before! Noice! Now I'll always hear it. Alice Cooper did "School's Out," Pink Floyd did "Another Brick In the Wall" ("Hey! Teacher! Leave those kids alone!"). Jinjer are the masters of "beat shifting" as you call it. Nobody is better. It's so intriguing, so different, so unexpected and in a way mysterious. Like you said, "Not gonna try and keep up with it" (but with a smile). That's honestly one of my very favorite things about Jinjer. They do it in virtually every song, extensively. And yeah, when Vlad and Eugene drop into that sick backbeat in the chorus, leaving all that empty space between beats, letting Tatiana drive the rhythm with her voice... Chef's kiss! That is so groovy it makes you move your head like a chicken. It's disgustingly good. BTW that 9 had a 4 underneath lol. Of course it did. Neil Peart used Promark 747s, which have butt ends on both ends. He did it for a couple years lol. Like 40. He managed to draw a lot of nuance out with the butt ends. Maybe he liked the balance better? This is always one of the first few songs that the Jinjer Army wants reactors to react to. It's just a great song. But the message is intriguing. You'll see others here relate how Tatiana describes the lyrics. It boils down to "be your own person." They have Ukrainian Orthodox and Russian Orthodox, and it's a whole thing. Almost like the Catholics and Protestants in Northern Ireland. You could say it's religious and cultural genocide. Because it is. But that's another topic. Wait till you see Home Back. Amen to you on what Jesus came here to do and to say! 100% agree. I think that's part of what Tatiana is saying here as well, in terms of commentary on organized religion. I like how you're distinguishing worship from religion. There is a difference! But that's a different conversation! Nice reaction dude! Keep up the Jinjer, we love it! Why do I use so many exclamation marks! 😂😂

We saw Rush on that TFE tour and it was about the best thing I've ever seen, with them playing 2112 in its entirety for the first and only time. A lot of people say the backward stick is about the snare sound... but I think it's just as much about cymbals. Isn't it a lot easier to hit _through_ a cymbal with the heavier butt of a stick? I've also wondered if it's drummers with a marching background, since marching sticks are so chonky and thicc. Though Vlad _definitely does not_ have a marching snare background, lol. Far from it. Clay Aeschliman, drummer for Polyphia, did play in Drum Corps, though... and I never see him play backwards, that I can recall. Still, a lot of metal drummers play with backwards sticks, though, or alternate. I also think sometimes it's just because of needing to end a stick trick early, or one going slightly wrong, and you catch it backwards, or stop the spin backwards, and just have to play that way. Like, I've seen Ray Luzier (drummer for Korn) playing normally, then do a stick trick and be backwards for a while, then flip it back around to normal when he has time. I've even heard of a few drummers who specifically get double-butted sticks. Evgeny Novikov, drummer for Slaughter To Prevail always plays with the butt... but he beats the everloving crap out of his cymbals, especially his china, which is kind of where I started to suspect it's about cymbal hits.
@teckreactions
@teckreactions 3 месяца назад
You just end up breaking cymbals at that point. You din’t have to hit harder to get more sound. You just need to hit them at the right angle and at the right velocity. The microphones do the rest. Vlad also doesn’t play with stick backwards regularly. So, this has been the only one I’ve seen him do it. But overall only seen a couple videos. I think it turned into more of a fad.
@barefootalien
@barefootalien 3 месяца назад
@@teckreactions Heh, yes, well, from what I've heard, Evgeny goes through chinas in about 2-3 concerts. xD But yeah, could also be a fad. Interestingly, a lot of drummers and/or drum teachers see a metal drummer hitting with the butt end, and are stunned and claim they'd never seen anyone do that before. While I'd say of the bands I watch a lot of videos of at least, it's right around 50/50, maybe even a slight majority. This points to it being a bit less likely to be a fad in my mind, or maybe just sort of an "underground" fad among drummers themselves? Very interesting. I've also never heard any truly convincing arguments about any measurable difference in sound... maybe someone needs to do an experiment? Or maybe drum techs and sound engineers consider this such obvious common knowledge that nobody's bothered. Or maybe the experiments have already been done... 🤔
@barefootalien
@barefootalien 3 месяца назад
@@teckreactions It also makes me wonder if it's more about the performative/visual aspect. Sure, the microphones might pick it up and do the work, but what if a drummer wants a _reputation_ for hitting with a ton of power, so wants the cymbals rocking dramatically? (I suspect this is what Evgeny is going for with his whole-body china hits in songs like Demolisher.) Also, now that I'm thinking along those lines... I see a lot of jazz drummers or other drummers using cymbals that are clearly destroyed, bent and warped in all kinds of ways, or even cracked or torn. Larnell Lewis has quite a few of these, as do many other Snarky Puppy drummers. Also, Jonathan Moffett has a couple of super-beat-up cymbals in his kit. Is this about sound? Looks? Nostalgia? ("MJ fell into this one while dancing in a rehearsal and flattened it, so I'll never toss it" or the like?) P.S. if you _do_ end up covering any Slaughter to Prevail (Evgeny has some of the most incredible drum playthroughs on the internet, with production at least as good as the songs themselves!), his name is notoriously hard to pronounce for non-Russian-speakers, so... "yev-GYEH-nee NOH-vih-KOV" will getcha pretty close. Technically the first O in his last name is somewhere between "No" and "Nah" while the second is very similar to the vowel sound in "cough", but if you get the first name anywhere close, you'll impress people. ;)

They play in drop A. I'm pretty sure the guitarist uses a baritone guitar with an extended scale length while the bassist uses a 5 string to keep the tension. The first drummer I know of who used the butt of the stick as the striking end was Mike Portnoy. I tried doing it... my left hand could not handle the vibration when I hit the snare. Also, kept destroying cymbals I hit with the left hand lol
@teckreactions
@teckreactions 3 месяца назад
For real. Mike Portnoy plays with much lighter sticks than normal so he has the speed around his kit. So it makes sense to turn his around sometimes. I play with Promark Rebound 5B with wooden acorn tips. Perfect balance and no need to spin them around.

We have here Orthodox Christianity in the east and all kinds of Catholicism in the west of the country. They have another song about religion that they wrote after the first Russian invasion. Being forced to leave the east and go to the west, they were struck by how religious people were there and how religion left no room for maneuver, and these impressions resulted in the song Sit Stay Roll Over.

@@teckreactions The band is of the generation in Ukraine who lived through the transition from the Soviet Union to Ukrainian independence. A generation who has seen some horrors, In 2014 they had to flee the Donbass region of Ukraine. Their homes, their friends. Tatiana's home town is within a few hundred meters of the front line as we speak. That generation like many in war torn areas are the most likely to ask the question "if there is a God why do these terrible things happen to me?". You might feel you have a good answer for that question but they might be hard to convince given the things they have seen and lost. That sentiment is sprinkled into some of her lyrics. She certainly isn't militant about it and not obsessed with it but coupled with the general aspect in metal music of throwing up devil horns in rebellion because it triggers some people not because it's expressing a belief that is the reason for the imagery. Her husband from what I gather is Mexican and his family might be Central American Catholic. A very large close family and there are pictures on Instagram of her and her husband at Christmas time with traditional decorations in the background. Obviously if she was militantly against Christian religion that wouldn't be something she could tolerate so I don't think it is even close to ruling her life or defining who she is it's just a sore spot with her to one extent or another because of what has happened in her life and the lives of her friends and family.

Blurry is better than nothing (for Vortex) 🙂 we can still watch the original video for reference. 3:46 I think the lowest note is an A, so it could be a drop A or some other tuning with A 9:01 oh nooooo not Alice Cooper 😝 but then at least you half-saved it 😂 10:41 that section is pretty cool: starts with a 4-bar progression, but then they modify it to 5 bars (all 9th chords I think), then she comes in and they continue the 5-bar pattern 12:44 I doubt that he's playing chords, sounds more like a single note (hit with a special technique), max 2 notes, but I'm not really sure 16:12 I suggested it because it's a cool song - very quick voice switches (back and forth between clean and growl), catchy chorus, interesting different sections and patterns, blast beats, surprise ending etc 🙂 Like others said, it's not specifically about religion. She even sings "the school was all imaginary". But since you mention it, the main (but not exactly "official") religion in Ukraine is Christianity, and the main denomination is Eastern Orthodox. It's REALLY funny to hear you say religion is ridiculous. Of course, "religion" can mean different things (especially to different people), but in general, I think the concept of a "worship drummer" doesn't really exist outside a religion. Unless you're perhaps playing exclusively for non-denominational "grassroots" small groups with no organization or set of doctrines. But like you said, that's for a different conversation. Anyway, my next recommendation from Jinjer is "Home Back" - it's a heavy song about the war in Ukraine, and (surprise!) it's older than the 2022 invasion.

Jinjer is from Donetsk region of Ukraine originally, which is Christian Orthodox. I don't think she's been in a Catholic-like school. Like others said, this is more of a general critique of people who are fast to judge others. This is kind of a recurring theme in her lyrics. My personal guess is that being a metalhead in a conservative corner of a former USSR state kind of made people like that expose themselves to her. She's not really flowing downstream with conservative cultures with her style and attitude.
