I have the same tool. On page 8 of the instruction manual, under General Operating Instructions, it says "WARNING. Do not use sand for blasting." Further down, it states that compressor pressure should not exceed 90 psi. I had no problems, after reading the manual. That's what it's for.
Not sure which manual you're looking at, but that's not what it says. The warning is specifically regarding using sand with silica, and it's NOT that the unit can't use sand, the warning is specifically about breathing silicosis and aluminum oxide.
Impressive! I love you didn't quit and your modification worked!! For people seeking an inexpensive sand blaster, this video shows how the mod is done. Once again, Friends, Live and learn! Thanks, Anatollii!
Dude, you just saved me so much sanding. Tryed the gun yesterday, didnt work. Been procrastinating sanding the molding on 10 oak doors for my friend, your a life savour man !
Holy Cow! Some hobbies should not be tried without researching the danger or hazards! When I saw you hold the metal with a bare hand and I was already concerned when you stated going to home depot for a bag of sand... If you accidentally pass that over your bare hand it can take off flesh. Sand is risky, even with a dust filter, when you take it off the dangerous dust is lingering in the air. Yes some sands are safer than others but why mess around, get some blast media.
Nice details, I have an old one that I never use because it never worked well. Going to work on that. Very handy to not have to pull out the big blaster for small jobs.
Thanks for this mod video and sizing on bits/holes. I know this is 2 1/2 years old, but for folks that are coming here later, it does indeed say not to use sand. However, I found a decent work around to get consistent media size from Home Depot sandbox sand. I first put the sand out on a tarp to dry in the sun - Then use a mesh strainer you can get from Walmart/Target and filter into a milk jug/soda bottle through a funnel. It takes out the largest pebbles and gives a generally consistent media without clogging.
@@coldspring624 You don't blast the beach sand at high velocity on metal plates while breathing the dust though. The NO SAND warning is because of silicosis, a lung disease that's nasty and occurs quite fast when exposed to significant amounts of silica (sand, concrete, plaster and other dusts, even glass) either over time or in acute exposure.
Man you are a true blue Harbor Freight customer. Harbor freight sandblaster. Harbor freight cordless drill and those dangerous gold drill bitts that snap in a heartbeat . I drilled a piece once like you did. Held the piece to be drilled in one hand while drilling with the other. The bit snapped and I drilled right through my thumb with the broken bit that was left in the drill. What a bloody mess . I NEVER buy drill bits from Harbor Freight anymore.
It does work out of the box if you use the proper media. Home Depot sand is made for a child's sandbox. It does not have a consistent grit size. I've used glass bead & aluminum oxide with great success. Moisture will clump the media and clog the gun, you need a water separator right at the gun.
I just brought one of those guns and same thing out the box it did not work so thank you very much for making this video it helps alot cause I was about to take it back to the store
@@23steph13 I’d like to say it went well, and I did get it done. Works incredibly well. Just took about 8 times the length of this video. LOL But worth the effort.
You have a 50/50 chance with this sand blaster, I did the modifications and it works great now but the guy next door to me, his worked right out of the box. I am also glad you remind everyone to wear goggles and gloves are a good idea as well, Thank you.
@@nateb4543 Not just the paint dust. The very sand itself that is being used for blasting here contains silica and you can end up with silicosis which is no joke.

Just picked up one of these today along with a used 5.5 hp compressor for $70.00. Hooked everything up and loaded the gun with glass heads. I’m going to etch glass. Cut a stencil on my Cricut, stuck it on a glass I wanted to test on and it was fantastic. I live in SW Florida so humidity is a way of life here. Installed a desiccant moisture absorber in line and went to town. I am throughly empresses with thing. It does a great job.
I followed this recommendations and the blasting improved a lot, but still was not good for the task at hand. I was trying to remove old paint from a porch light and it failed miserably. My compressor does not hold 90 psi for more than a second or two, it drops to 60 very quickly, so that might be my problem and not the improved modified gun. Thank you.
The most important factor in any media blasting is having the proper media. Home Depot sand is not made for sandblasting. It has tiny rocks, pebbles, and debris in the bag. You need either sand made for sandblasting, or you can filter your own sand through a screen to remove the larger particles that are clogging the valve and the tip on the gun.
NOT supposed to be using sand through this gun. Says right on it not to use sand. Glass beads worked great through mine. No issues. Haven’t tried baking soda but should work too. All this extra work was unnecessary
I gotta strip the paint off some old steel wheels for a repaint. Liquid strippers barely phase it. A 2400psi pressure washer with the needle tip does not phase it. Think this would do anything?
I found sacks of black grit at Menards. I think it was eleven bucks or so. It works great but you are constantly refilling the hopper. I tried baking soda today. I dont think it's as aggressive but it lasted a lot longer. I bought sand and it didnt go through, im sure glad it didnt, the comments said I would have Silicosis right now. I have a respirator so i might get a second gun to modify.
you can use river sand if you dry it out first i use a metal bucket on a propane burner to dry the sand quick and easy damp sand will clog any sand blaster
"silica dust is very hazardous to inhale." silica dust is really bad, it lingers in their air and doesn't settle, then becomes airborn. most states have banned it's use. it's worth the spend to go to a tool shop and buy the proper sandblasting media, plus get advice on the right material to use for your job.
@@LatinDanceVideos Blasting media is quite expensive especially if you don’t have a way to recover and recycle it I don’t agree with banning the use of silica sand just saying it’s dangerous or hazardous isn’t the best warning either they should put the definition of silicosis then people could make an educated decision to use a respirator or not
Yeah mine is doing the same, Just thought it was a piece of scheisser, Didnt think about doing that mod, Guess i will be taking it to work tomorrow to modify when i get a spare 5 minutes
I’ve had one of those for a long time. Has never performed properly, like yours. I’m gonna make those mods. Get a hood. Keep the media out of your face and hair. Also filter your media with a 5gallon bucket and window screen. You can figure out how. I used the bucket lid to hold the screen with about an 8 inch hole in it to hold the screen. I use play sand and filter (screen) it. Or you can get blasting sand from some hardware stores.
Анатолий, здравствуйте. Спасибо за видео, собираюсь обзавестись таким же или подобным. Как вообще впечатления от аппарата после доработки? Можете рекомендовать ?)
Obviously not an experienced user. You’d think, however, that someone could kinda figure out that if the tool is meant to remove paint and rust, it MIGHT be wise to: a)wear some good gloves and b) keep your hands and other body parts away from the nozzle. C) wear a mask or better yet a respirator and goggles or a face shield.
This is perfect for those wanting to blast coarse media yes it's probably not intended for it but it obviously works so i dont see the issue for all the ppl wining
Thanks for the video, I did the modification on mine but it still didn't work properly. Can you please tell me what size air compressor you used? I have a Dewalt 16 gallon compressor, I used play sand and also tried black diamond media. Could the compressor size be the issue? Thanks
