Back in the day when I drove to Savannah from Atlanta on I-16, I took a length of PVC pipe and cut a hole through it. The PVC slipped down over the Hustler pole (mast). The other end extended forward to the luggage rack, attached with a bolt, rubber washers and wing nut. This was great to take the strain of the wind off the Hustler and connector. I think I had a second tension line to the side to stabilize the mast. Just a consideration Walt.

You can never have too many antennas 🙂. I have just repurposed my magnetic loop antenna to work with my uSDX QRP SDR rig and it works great and will definitely be an easy portable antenna for 20 to 10 meters. Not sure I will mount it for mobile use though lol. Good to see you still using CB - so many seem to ignore it which is a shame ( 11m skip in Europe has been amazing lately). 73 M7BLC

I have a small home mag loop for 20m & a car with a panoramic sunroof.. look at a metal box with massive holes in the front, back, slides and top and how good a screen do you think that would be... 20dB if that & that is only a smidge over 3 S points... Not for TX but for RX it is surprising how much you can still hear with your mag loop INSIDE the car. I had mine suspended by 2 bungie cords between the 2 rear grab handles (& could reach back between the seats to peak the capacitor tuning). Give it a try & you will be surprised to see what you can still hear ( inc DX)..... And you don't even have to worry about low car park roofs or car washes... The ultimate stealth antenna.

I love hamsticks. I have a Breedlove stake mount on the back of my f-150. I put a piece of 6” PVC pipe under my back seat. I store the antennas in that. I also use harbor freight colored zip ties to match the whip to the base. Just grab both green items, screw together and get on the air. I use an ic-705 in the truck. I hope go buy an ft-891 at the Huntsville Hamfest to mount permanently. Love the content. Keep being you. Thanks, Ray -KN4RAY

working great. I just have the mag mount for the car. has 3 large magnets and is MNO . I do have adapter to 3/8 . manly just GMRS/MURS Comet VHF/UHF antenna. tunes 2 meters and 70 CM great. has very large band with and good gain. I do have CB antenna . even a fire stick 102 in fiber glass whip. it's orange. wont drive with that on but a rest area gets out great and tunes 10/11/12 meters with ATU . I do have a 4 FT CB antenna. 3/8 mount. receives great but poor on TX but has great tune. I got LiFePO4 100 Ah/200 Ah in back depending which I put in. got DC/DC charger and 12V cooler . it will freeze as well. we had ice cream in hot summer when on the road. kids at camp ground went nuts we has ice-cream was 94F that day and muggy. and I did radio at night. 100 watts HF. the only trouble I have is mostly AC noise when car is running. AC off not too bad. only S3 noise from car. put the AC on and it's 10 over 9 . it's the fan. changes with fan speed. snap ferrite just came today. I will try fan motor wires. I all ready did all DC power leads. my work uses lots of ferrite cores cutting RFI. RV's pretty bad at times. solar MPPT is also bad at times. depends on controller. the cheap China ones super bad. Victron pretty quit. I got 200 watt solar in car. Texas got record size hail. be safe on trip. keep in tune to NOAA radio. what I do. great coverage . my radio auto scans all NOAA and tunes to best one. great travel . weather crazy . be safe ,73's

Hey Walt and thank you for the entertaining video. The back of your car looks suspiciously like mine: a bunch of poles and antennas, cables, various antenna mounts, wires and such. Not much room for anything else 😆 I really like the Diamond mono-band HF antennas with the coil at half-height. They seem to be the most efficient. I have the 10, 20 and 40m models on a large magnet mount with a ground braid to the body of the car and I'm quite happy with these. OTOH I had a bad experience with the so-called multiband Outback antennas. Almost impossible to tune on 40m and not quite efficient IMHO. No risk holding the mike while driving in the US? The cops wouldn't like this here. [edited for typos]

Walt like you I love playing with antenna. My most recent project is a 88.5 foot 29 Meter random wire fed by a 9:1 with a 1.1 unun immediately behind it. Starts at the top of a 20 foot mast sloping down to about 10 feet. I get less than 1.5:1 swr on all bands except 80 meters which runs 2.5:1. Even 160 meters runs 1.2:1. 1 25 foot counterpoise with comes to lay on the ground. I was planning on playing with the counterpoise to optimize the antenna but with these results I have not touched it. With my G90 I just got off 15 meters with 5 by 9 reports into Europe. I just had cataract surgery but when I am back to 100% I’ll be trying some verticals along the lines of what you use. Horace N1DDH.

@@COASTALWAVESWIRES I didn't even take the tuner into account for mobile use. I was more concerned about the 20 watt output for mobile operation. Between Aug of 2023 and Feb 2024 I was using a wire dipole cut for 10 meter and was able to talk from 10 meter down to 40 meter because of the tuner on the G90. Probably wasn't the most efficient, but that is what I had thanks to my Elmer insisting we put up the 10 meter antenna when we put up my dual band 2m/70cm vertical in April 2023 prior to me getting my General ticket upgrade. The thought was I could at least get on 10 meter if I got a HF radio before upgrading to General. I wound up receiving the G90 as a gift for upgrading to General so I made the best of what I had at the time. Now I have an 80 to 10 EFHW for the home shack.

Will grounding the chassis and the plane where the antenna is make a difference? And if so, what’s the best way to ground it? Copper mesh?
@COASTALWAVESWIRES
@COASTALWAVESWIRES 17 дней назад
Hmmm, could be many things. If you are using the truck’s power the simplest solution is to wire the radio directly to the battery. I’ve done this and immediately eliminated noise. I don’t think grounding the chassis will make a difference, in fact it may cause you to pick up even more noise. That’s just my first thoughts.
