This is a 2 part video on how to coat Lead Cast Bullets with the Green Bullet lube thats available from Bayou Bullets. The process is is pretty easy to do and can be done with only a minimal investment of the lube from Bayou Bullets and a oven to bake the bullets in to cure.
A more detailed look at the sizing with an adapter that I made. • Resizing HI-Tek Green ...

p.s. I too really like the LEE press being mounted upside down, that's a great idea!

My father and I coat bullets with Hi-tek regularly. It does not matter if they are tumble style or lube groove style bullets..both will work just fine. As far as sizing them goes, you have to size them AFTER the coating is finished. The cast bullets need to be free of contaminants for the coating to adhere and correctly coat. This rules out any pre-sizing as you can't size "dry" bullets as it will cause galling and lead smearing off onto your sizing die throwing the dimensions all to hell. So sizing must take place after the coating process is complete. When you are minimally oversized it is no problem and the coating is not damaged during sizing. I myself spray some Hornady One shot lube on the coated bullets before sizing to ensure nothing builds up in the sizer and it works perfectly!! The key to not compromising the coating while sizing is to have a minimally oversized cast bullet dimension. The less you have to squeeze down the less disruption to the surface etc.So it is important to match the alloy characteristics of expansion/contraction to the machined dimensions of the mold. The mold maker can tell you the expected results with the various alloys. Some of the higher end mold makers will make you a custom mold on your desired specs and alloy. Yeah there is more to it than just melt, pour, and coat to get optimum results lol.

I like the upside down Lee idea when sizing, nice!

You can put the coated bullet back in but the coating will have to be skimmed off of the top. I do size after coating, most are sized correctly but there are a few need it. Since making this video I have come up with a tube/funnel that I drop the bullet in and it goes even faster.

Thanks so much for showing this! i've been casting for a lot of years, and The whole wax thing gets to be problematic, plus other shooters hate your guts at the range as soon as they start smelling it! I intend to look into this. Thanks again!

I was one of those people at the range with the smokey gun. I've just decided to sell off my super moly, pan, baster, silicone pan, and punch tool, in favor of transitioning to powder coating system. SO much less labor intensive!

my pop made this invention his a genius the idea of this coating is so that it doesn't pop the coating when you shoot it and its colour changes when its ready

Does laying them on the mesh leave any marks on the bullet as they dry? Ive seen where others stand the bullets on end, but that is with enamel. thanks for the video

The purpose of the hi-tech bullet lube is to greatly reduce or eliminate leading in the barrel and to reduce the amount of smoke compared to regular wax bullets. I personally use coated bullets and I have virtually no leading of the barrel.

Could you put that hammer tested bullet back in your production pot with the coating on it? Also, do you normally size after coating, or was that just to test the coating? I like your upside down Lee press for sizing, I have never seen that before. I bet it works pretty good.

Bayou bullets shoot well and smoke less, but the smoke that comes off them gives me really bad headaches, and a lady I shoot with who has respiratory problems gets attacks when she is around the smoke. Is there MSDS info on the bottle I have always wondered if they are actually safer than shooting lead un-coated.

Ice cola - they do need to be cooled. But it could also be that you tumbled them a little too long. Also note, they will not be completely smooth.

core drill the bullet to the size of a .177 BB jb weld a BB in there and copper plate it and you got one hell of a man stopper

Sorry to ask a dumb question; but I've always been taught that "No question is a dumb question..." So here goes: What's the purpose for painting your bullets? Is it just to have a different color bullet other than lead grey? Or Is it just a cool factor? Is there a gain to coating your bullets that I am not seeing? Reading through the posts, it seems that people are saying that it's to reduce leading; if this is the case, instead of cleaning lead out of your barrel, wouldn't you just end up cleaning paint out? Thanks in advance for the video because it was cool to know that I can paint my bullets.

Its not to reduce leading so much as to reduce smoke. If you've shot lead bullets with alox or ones that have been lubri-sized, you know how smoky they shoot. Bayou bullets have zero smoke, much like jacketed or plated ones. This coating makes your cast lead bullets get that benefit.
@DaveSmith-cp5kj
@DaveSmith-cp5kj 8 лет назад
+Kenneth Elston It reduces leading AND smoke because the paint acts as a barrier between the lead and the barrel. However, the paint stays on the barrel so there is zero fouling. You have to see it to believe it, you can shoot thousands of rounds and the gun may start jamming from the burnt powder residue that builds up (as it does with jacketed bullet shooting without cleaning) but the barrel is mirror shiny.

I haven't noticed any issues with using it. The second coat will cover any spots left from the first. If you haven't seen it yet there is a huge thread at castboolits.gunloads search there..

This stuff looks a lot like polyester resin diluted with acetone and some hardener. And it stinks when you heat cure it.
