I used to go in search of tidal roads, fords and flooded roads from rivers. Ive driven through depths up to just below the bonnet (high air intake) and yet when you come across a flooded road, the expanse of water makes drivers panic, they think its ten foot deep ! I always look at the water against kerbs, fences and other fixed points to try and gauge the depth as best as I can. Often looks far worse than it is. Great fun.

Great video! Love the music. Reminds me of racing the tide at Lindisfarne. Know your vehicle, know the road and know the local conditions. If you don't know, don't risk it.

Landy goes straight through. Merc off roader sits and waits, says it all really.

Stewart, The driver of the landy, Mark Cain had earlier that day been off roading and the underside was muddy, he actually drove across 3 times quickly to wash the mud off. this vid shows how it's done. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-3QCJW_Fn_ng.html

How quick does it come up? If I drive over and it’s dry it won’t come up quickly right? I’m from London I’m not experienced with tides but want to check out the Essex islands.

Hi Sam,The soundtracks I used for this video are 1.) ATB - 9pm Till I Come ((A Russian DJ Tarantino remix of the original.) 2.) Blondie - Rapture, and The Doors - Riders of the Storm (a home made mash up of these two tracks.) 3.) Coldplay - Paradise, (a remix.) 4.) Darude - Sandstorm, again a remix club edit. If you'd like any of these tracks for your own vids, email me & I can send them to you. Regards, Mal Hyams mal.hyams@btinternet.com

Is this water salt water if so is it super corrosive
@malhyams
@malhyams 6 лет назад
Hi Jose, Yes, it is salt water. The road floods only a few times a year. Where we live in East Anglia in the UK, it rains quite a lot so corrosion is really not an issue.

buy a tide time table. and get to the strood at least an hour before an extra high tide x the locals dont want a bridge grrrr, just hope they dont have an accident on the island, as the ambulances would not reach them. Terrible accident on the island recently !
@ANDREWLEONARDSMITH
@ANDREWLEONARDSMITH 3 года назад
Why do the locals not want a bridge across? Do they derive pleasure from this danger? Anyway a bridge is not nesscary as the obvious solution is to raise the level of the causeway way above the high tide level.Are the locals against this too? Are the totally ignorant of the damage salt water does to vehicles & also it prevents the emergency service from doing their job safely This causeway (& all other similar causeways in the UK ) which are on main roads should be raised above the high tide level with funding from the national flood defence budget as this kind of regular tidal flooding is a dangerous nuisance which should be consigned to history once & for all.

@@ANDREWLEONARDSMITH I agree with you, but then, they say, it wont be an Island .......they dont really welcome visitors anymore IMO.....

@porcupine460

@@ANDREWLEONARDSMITH Hi, local here. There is a fire service on the island for emergencies and there are also a couple of clinics/doctors for emergencies. Crime is not really an issue on Mersea so not much need for a police station, but if there was every such an emergency the RNLI station at Mersea or the Essex Air Ambulance can and has taken the relevant people across quickly (the latter can land on the beach). The island is only ever cut off for max. 3hrs too, and not every day as tidal peaks vary massively. All in all, it's a small price to pay for the charm that the Strood brings to Mersea - people who drive across when it is obviously too high probably had it coming given the number of warning signs and flood height markers there are on the road. We also make sure to always hose off our vehicles afterwards!

loved the land rover that just blasted it . Right vehicle, and probably right guy that had done it before. Unfortunately just makes the less caple have ago. For the record, once sat there with a real high tide and nobody was brave enough . A money van ( transit )ploughed right through the water. Must be a mix of policy that cant stop and fully protected engine. The water was deep, no 4x4s or loons were trying, but the van went right through the middle ??

Question one...how long does the causeway stay flooded question two. ..could they not raise the causeway?
@malhyams
@malhyams 9 лет назад
Colin Clarke Colin, As far as I know the Causeway only floods during spring tides. From my experience the flooding only lasts an hour or so and does not create sufficient challenges for road users to be a major issue. The Causeway could be raised but the cost far exceeds any benefits. I guess in total the flooding only lasts around 10 hours per year. Hope that helps with your question.
@porcupine460
@porcupine460 13 дней назад
Hi, local here. 1. It stays flooded for anything from a few minutes to 3 hours depending on the tidal peak for the day. It floods year-round but not every day - the tides tend to fluctuate every two weeks or so from low to high. The tide timetable can be found online and as a general rule 5m will cover for 1/2 hour either side of the high tide and 5.5m will cover for 1.5 hours either side. 2. Yes we could raise it but it would cost a ridiculous amount and ruin the charm and uniqueness of the island for the sole benefit of not having to rescue a couple of muppets per year who decide to take their Ford Fiesta through a metre of water! There are emergency services on the island so there's no danger about them not being able to reach it and the RNLI/Air Ambulance can always bring more help if needed.
