Hickory Run State Park is one of the premiere hiking destinations in the Pocono Mountains of Pennsylvania. With over 40 miles of trails featuring waterfalls, dense and diverse forests, and geological and historical attractions there is something here for everyone. Today we take a look at the extremely popular and photogenic Hawk Falls, and the lesser known but beautiful Mud Run Natural Area. Our hike starts on the route 534 parking area and descends along Hawk Run on a wide and well worn path, crosses a foot bridge and quickly reaches the waterfall. These falls are a super popular area, many people try to swim here, and the place can quickly become overcrowded. The park service does its best to maintain order and swimming is NOT ALLOWED, and violators will be fined. Try to visit early and during the week for an opportunity to experience this scenic treasure in its purest and most natural state. Many people will simply return to there cars from this point but there is much more to see for those willing to explore onward. Just after the falls Hawk Run empties into Mud Run which is a much larger classic mountain stream - crystal clear waters, fast moving currents, and continuous rapids, boulders, and deep pools. Bear left at Mud Run, following upstream, and you will soon connect with the Orchard trail. In this particular hike I missed the obvious trail junction where I should have went to the left and continued following the yellow blazes. Instead I plowed ahead on a faint footpath that followed Mud Run. I do not recommend this option as it was overgrown, loaded with spider webs, and the footing was extremely treacherous in places. Ultimately, I did emerge back onto the Orchard trail after a bushwack up the side of the hill but I picked up a tick and some poison ivy for my efforts. The orchard trail is a beautiful trail, marred only by the occasional far off sound of traffic from the nearby Northeast Extension of the Pennsylvania turnpike. Here the trail meanders through thick stands of rhododendron and beneath a healthy and dark canopy of hemlock, pine, and oak. Rocks are covered with brilliant bright green mosses, and Mud Run roars at it courses through the thoroughly scenic surroundings. This is classic, iconic, Pocono habitat. Eventually the trail emerges onto an unpaved access road where you will turn left and emerge back onto rt. 534. It is only a short quarter mile or so road walk back to the car. All in all alittle over 3 miles of beautiful hiking through the Mud Run Natural area of Hickory Run State Park.

My wife and I camped at the SP campground. We hiked this trail last month. Your video brings back nice memories!! We made the left turn and followed the Orchard Trail. My Alltrails app showed the sketchy trail you were on, but we decided to go left. Thank goodness we did, as we had our two dogs with us. We took the trail that brought us out to Rt 534 and walked the road back to the parking area. You really don't have to change your filming technique. It's done very well!! Happy trails!

Your very kind. Yes it is a very scenic spot. We have had alot of rainfall in Pennsylvania recently, and all of the falls and streams have been running strong here. Also lots of mushrooms popping up everywhere. Thank you for watching and commenting, I truly appreciate it!

Once again you find the coolest places. In answer to your question, I like to see a variety of shots from the walk by shots to the 1st person perspective. You do such a good job mixing them up and giving us a good variety of shots. I'm so jealous you are able to get out so often. I barely get a chance to try new spots. Thanks for sharing all these cool spots. Love the blooper reel at the end! Guess I'm not the only one who has to do take after take.

Thank you for your feedback my friend. I tend to concur that mixing up different angles and shots is the best way to go. I appreciate that you watched till the end, I can be a bit of a perfectionist, and talking scenes like that are always the hardest for me to pull off. So now everybody knows how it really goes out there, lol. As for my ability to get out so much, I have a strange work schedule where its either 60 hours a week or just a handful. I've learned that time is our most precious commodity in life, so I choose to spend as much of mine as possible doing the things I love and pursuing my passion for nature, hiking, and filming whenever I can. Take care my friend.

You really captured the picturesque nature of the park. I'm sure with the waterfall being so close to the parking lot it gets crowded. I like how you weave the various views throughout your filming. Thank your for all you do in making these engaging videos! The behind the scenes makes me appreciate them all the more, realizing that it sometimes requires multiple takes for a 30 second clip.

Thanks Eva, I appreciate your input so much. I hate to admit it, but I have to be honest, I crashed the drone into Mud Run! Luckily I bought the insurance, and I'm in the process of getting a new one. But yes I enjoy the birds eye view myself for sure!

ah i wish i was able to see hawk falls while i was there! i was pressed for time so i sort of just was able to see a few things, but i thought the waterfall they had over by the chapel was absolutely stunning! 🌿✨
@WALTERZOLNA
@WALTERZOLNA 2 года назад
There are actually a half dozen or more waterfalls and many many riffles and rapids throughout Hickory Run. I do agree the area by the chapel is very scenic. Right across the road from there is the Shades of Death trail, which is a short but scenic trail following another creek. So while Hawk Falls is the biggest waterfall at Hickory Run there are many options for beautiful waterside hikes and views. Thankyou Marie for your comment!

I had been noticing in my travels that all the waterways and streams have been flowing at a healthy clip lately, which is unusual for the end of summer. Thank you for verifying that this is in fact the case and not just in my head! That was my first return to Hawk falls in 12 years, and I find it to be a very photogenic and relaxing place, IF you can time your visit right. By the time I had finished my hike the lot was full and people were asking me for directions to the "swimming area", which is my cue to hit the road, lol.

Thanks for the feedback! From my perspective, first person is good if you can hold the camera steady enough and keep it from bouncing around which can be very hard to do on a trail.

My dad would take us to hickory run, to hike, swim and catch salamanders, there is a lake there for swimming, I believe it's called sand spring and also boulder field is there formed by glaciers. Your editing and music is excellent.
