Hydrahead Hunter yes let’s do that so artists remain in poverty and all industry grinds to a halt. Yep because the months and years writers, artists, musicians and so on put into their work shouldn’t be rewarded at all, ever. Gee wonder how well that would work? Yeah it doesn’t. Look I know you’re probably trolling but it’s not a joke. Copyright is one of the best things that ever happened.
@ookazi1000
@ookazi1000 4 года назад
@@hitandruncommentor Did I ever say we shouldn't compensate artists: did I ever even imply it? No. No, I don't think I did. I pretty sure I said "we should abolish copyright and intellectual property as they currently exist." Artists should absolutely be compensated more than they currently are (and IP as it currently exists is one of the forces that depress wages). Imagine a world where artists don't have to work for the company that owned the thing they wanted to create but were instead free create whatever they wanted. You'd see abusive studios disintegrate right quick as artists just say: fuck yer dad, We'rra gonna go make [Insert Creative Work Here] without you and be directly compensated for our work instead of letting you take the lion's share for just owning the IP. I'm something of an artist myself, and let me tell you copyright as it currently exists doesn't protect artists: it protects intellectual property owners. See every youtuber ever complaining about youtube's content id system and DMCA. See all the millions of stories written on Ao3 and Fanfic that go uncompensated because the artists don't own the characters they're using. See Taylor Swift being unable to perform the music SHE WROTE because some motherfucker owns the rights to her reditioning of that song. See the little guys who get their art stolen by big corporations who then lose their court case and receive no compensation. So on, so on. Copyright as it exists in our society does not protect innovation either: All the soulless francise reboots you see are a direct result of big corporations taking the safe bet and leveraging their monopoly over the ideas they own. If anyone could write a star wars story, do you really think the star wars sequels we got would have been the way they were? The Aurtherian mythos is nothing but fanfics of previous works within the canon: same with the Grimm collection, and no fewer than two dozen of the most critically acclaimed classics. If Shakespeare had lived under our current copyright system, there'd have never been a /Romeo and Juliet/, the ultimate lover's tragedy to wit all others are compared, because /Romeus and Juliet/ wouldn't have entered the public domain until 1637. My boy the bard died in 1616.
@ookazi1000
@ookazi1000 4 года назад
Under capitalism, where 'idea theft' means starvation, there should absolutely be a system that protects artists from 'idea theft,' but this ain't it cheif. The system we currently have which was started with that intent has been completely coopted by capital (read BIG DISNEY) starting in the 1960s, resulting in longer and longer copyright terms with the Copyright Term Extension Act of 1990 [CTEA(1990)] putting the length of a copyright term at the 70 years we see today and the DMCA not only destroying any legal direct action that could be taken to restore justice in the face of copyright abuse, but also completely face-melted the longstanding concept of fair use. Ideally, we'd see the overthrow of capitalism resulting in dissolution in the system because we'dn't need it anymore, but failing that: we need an abolition and ground up rework of the system.

Kara no Kyokai is definitely great as a whole, and it's definitely hidden in some ways. But it's hard to tell HOW hidden it is. It DID get a full series of movies out, and they never stopped and said "we're not making enough money to make these", so it's probably at least passably popular in Japan. It doesn't help that they were never dubbed in English though.

@Janeiro I I think to an extent it depends on what you look for in an anime. I am very big into themes and story, which Silver Spoon does not have a ton of, but I ranked it above Eccentric Family because Silver Spoon is LITERALLY my life in anime form. I'm a writer so I can think something is objectively better as a story, but if you don't care about a story, obviously you're not going to take to story-driven anime like the ones I listed. It boils down to opinions on value judgments, but I do believe there are objectively good anime from a story viewpoint.

Just rewatched the first 21 episodes. Gotta say. It did age very well. I mean. Obviously the visual quality shows its age from the 480p resolution to occasional "GIF-style" animation sequences...occasional though it may be. It's really quite charming. I don't know why I give it such a pass, when I criticize the animation in the new Digimon reboot. Perhaps because it's more congruent with the time and overall feel of the show than in Digimon where, on the beautifully-detailed backgrounds, they've just got a still image of the bug digimon moving across the screen. Or it could be nostalgia. But...I think it's actually really good and does hold up. Especially with the humor and kick ass music that just gets your blood pumping, ready for the next episode. "Hey Lina, that girly-looking Dragon...is a guy." "What were you looking at?"

Pretty much anything by CLAMP at this point, you rarely hear about their works anymore. They were huge in the 90s and 2000s. While I know there's CCS- Clear Card, I don't hear anyone talking about it. It's a shame too because one of my fav anime/manga of all time comes from CLAMP- Magic Knight Rayearth (I've read the manga and have all of the anime, including the OVA). It was one of the first anime to put a twist on the Magical Girl setting that Sailor Moon established in the 90s. I would also add the works of the following manga-ka too- Arina Tanemura (Full Moon o Shagasite, Phantom Thief Jeanne) and my fav manga artist- Yuu Watase (Fushigi Yuugi, Ceres Celestial Legend). All of these artists had works that shaped my taste in anime and manga and I love their works (even the ones that didn't become anime). Other Hidden Gems I love are Jing: King of Bandits (Jing is a Robin Hood type of char, he's a noble thief and the anime is short with most episode being "one shot" episodes) and MADLAX (created by the same people who did Noir). *Hears Wolf's Rain* I don't like it either because it made me cry at the end OMG did they really go full out. I remember first hearing about it in NEWTYPE America (when that was still in print) and wanted to see it. Finally got the chance, I can't remember which channel I saw it on because it was on TV. OMG was it brutal! I was dumbstruck by the end and was pretty disappointed actually. Arkada- "Gankutsuou is-" Me- "A trip?" Arkada- "Weird" Me- "Close enough" lol. Yeah it is weird, but still dark. Definitely interesting animation for sure. Not my fav rendition of this classic tale, but still pretty cool. Princess Tutu, I didn't like the ending. It just left me disappointed. Great anime yes, but just not for me.

the whole "your next favourite anime is already out but you haven't found it yet" is a very fun thought, i like it a lot!! so a couple of weeks ago i decided to randomly generate one anime out of my PTW list on MAL because i thought i haven't seen that many underground anime. i got glasslip which i added on my list only because of the suuuper low rating and i wanted to see what's so bad about it? watched it and loved it, all the symbolism and weird stuff, the fact that you don't know what's real and what's not, the open ending, i loved everything about it!! (i'll probably get a lot of hate because of this lol) since then i've been trying to do this more often and found real hidden gems like tsuritama, hourou musuko, hybrid child, kirakira precure à la mode etc. although this might spun a whole other discussion about different opinions and the fact that everybody likes and hates different things. and sometimes you can't even say why, it's just how you feel. thank you for this video and also to the person who wrote that comment, it was tons of fun thinking about this and sharing my experience 🤗

Dude, I've been an anime fan for like over 12 years and it's crazy to see how many shows are becoming obscure over that small amount of time! Recently I had the chance to talk to younger anime fans and I think it's so interesting to see their take on what anime is popular right now. With streaming and other means to watch anime on it's becoming so mainstream I just think it's awesome. Although it can still be terrifying that the landscape can change so rapidly. As for some of my hidden gems I would definitely have to put: - Moribito: Guardian of the Spirit - Rozen Maiden (maybe..?) - Bamboo Blade - Shakugan no Shana (Also in the maybe category) - Gankutsuou - Hozuki's Coolheadedness - Kakuriyo no Yadomeshi - Baccano! (might be more on the classic range) - Blood Lad - Princess Resurrection (and also I'm putting this one on here because I don't really hear people talking about it either, but I'm not the biggest fan. It's called Cat Soup; interesting, but very strange and niche)

I remember Gosick quite fondly. It scratched my itch for historical European setting anime and mysteries. I think the way it swings between being episodic and being more serialized makes it harder to remember what all happens, but I still remember how it made me feel. To add to the ever expanding list of possible hidden gem candidates, I feel like xxxHolic is quite underrated, particularly the second season and OVAs. I think the manga is better appreciated because the anime really went for the slapstick comedy, but it knows how to hit you with mystery, fantasy, horror and melodrama when it needs to. Maybe it just needs a remake to really shine?

I guess to add onto the list, Angel's Egg and The Wings of Honneamise: Royal Space Force are two 80's gems I would consider hidden at this point. In conversations about old, artsy classics from that era, they sometimes come up, but not like Akira does. Also, though incomplete, at this point Kare Kano is a hidden gem I would say, at least as a pretty good intro to the story in the manga. And finally, the 1001 Arabian Nights animation from I think 1999 by Yoshitka Amano (Final Fantasy) is a really neat experience. Think of an extended, trippier section of Disney's Fantasia. (Wish they would've set it to the original Scheherezade, but oh well).

I think that to be a real "hidden gem" an anime has to fly under the radar when it comes out, not just get forgotten in time. So Claymore, Ergo Proxy, Elfen Lied and the like can't be classified as such as they were pretty big things when they came out. Though, I might consider allowing those that are pretty good but not good enough to be classics to fall into that category with time. :) As for Planetes and Wolf's Rain, those are classics, pure and simple... among the best representatives of their respective categories. And for my own "hidden gem" recommendation, Those Who Hunt Elves. It's almost never mentioned or talked about, but it's hilarious. :)

Boy do I have a list of hidden gems that I feel should get more attention in the west nowadays especially for new anime watchers just joining the anime community. *Bodacious Space Pirates* - Very few people actually know about this show despite it having a full 24 episode length and a movie so it's definitely hidden though whether it can be considered a gem depends on taste I guess. *Mahou Shoujo Lyrical Nanoha Series* - A rather old series that's still well known in Japan but more or less forgotten now in the west despite being one of the earlier animes brought over with an English dub. Only older anime watchers remember this show. *Mahoujin Guru Guru* - This is more classic than anything but again, it's rarely ever talked about despite having a remaster/remake in 2017. *Mon Colle Knights* - Another childhood classic that I know you mentioned once in the past. *Fushigi Yuugi* - Again, more along the lines of Slayers and the classic thing but I think it still counts *The Vision of Escaflowne* - One of the original isekai anime out there before the isekai booms. *Pandora Hearts* - not sure if this one counts but it's definitely more hidden nowadays. *Gunbuster/Diebuster* - Again, not sure if this one counts as hidden but I feel like Gurren Lagann overshadows this series enough to be considered hidden. *Nadia: The Secret of Bluewater* - Again, another Gainax show that gets overshadowed a lot by Neon Genesis Evangelion, Gurren Lagann etc. *Tsubasa Chronicles/xxxHolic* - I put these two together due to their shared connection. *X* - Another one of Clamps work that seems to have been forgotten. *Crest of the Stars* - A series on pair with LOGH in my opinion in terms of Space Opera. *Shaman King* - Not many of the newer generations of anime watchers seem to know about this. Also it's getting the Brotherhood/HxH treatment of getting a remake. *The Mythical Detective Loki Ragnarok* - Another oldie but goody. *Hellgirl* - Not sure if this counts but I'm putting it in anyway. I would have put *Symphogear* as well but its recent attention due to Crunchyroll promoting its last season means it's not as hidden as it used to. That's all I can think of at the moment but I'm sure there are plenty more out there.

I get the feeling as well. After watching anime for a while and seeing popularity rise and fall. Some series just doesn’t seem hidden even though maybe not so many people tend to talk about it currently. Like Shaman King or Eyeshield 21. For me there’s a bunch of titles that comes up when talking about hidden gems. Stuff like Ergo Proxy, Haibane Renmei, Nana, Planetes... I understand that they might be some great series and more people should see them but they seem less hidden because they always seem to have a firm fanbase backing them. For me a hidden gems needs to be more hidden yet offers something that’s presently surprising. Some of which are: Infinite Ryvius, Figure 17, Heat Guy J, Maison Ikkoku.

Punch Line is my hidden gem I love recommending. The MAL description takes a very minor plot point and makes it out to look like it's an ecchi series but it's actually a goofy character-driven action series sort of in the vein of Kiznaiver when it comes to tone. Also surprisingly pretty. Edit: I was scrolling through looking for other people's recommendations and completely forgot about Kaiba. That's one of my favorites for entirely different reasons. Gorgeous Astro Boy inspired animation and a great message about class consciousness with just enough artsy sci fi weirdness. Flip Flappers is also great, but it's pure artsy sci fi weirdness with some moe yuri flavor. Edit again: Tetsuwan Birdy, the original OVA, is really interesting and the longer adaptation from the 2000s didn't do it justice.

Key: The Metal Idol (Received lots of promotion in its day, however, it now appears to be largely forgotten) Speed Grapher (I don't think distributors had a clue how to sell this) Patlabor (Obviously a popular show and a classic, however, newer fans seem not to know of it)
@Typhoonis88

Speed Grapher is a very strange anime which I found intriguing but I don't think its something that many people would enjoy. I personally loved the visuals but the story felt odd even by anime standards. I will say that it is definitely hidden tho I don't think I have ever seen anyone else mention it before or if there is anyway to view it besides sailing the high seas! Ps fully endorse the other 2 mentions Patlabor is a 10/10 for me such a good series

Hidden Gems you say... I think i would consider Jin-Roh, Angels Egg and Serial Experiments Lain as such. These are known by critics but basicly vanished out of the normal conversations of the very most anime fans today. You could also consider somethink like Death Billiards a hidden gem, while Death Parade is at least known to quite a few people, Billards hasn´t even 1/5 of the ratings on MAL and even some DP fans seem to have forgotten about it, even though it´s actually pretty good.
@wolfco47
@wolfco47 4 года назад
Hmm... Angels Egg takes a certain type of fan to enjoy though because of its format. On the other hand, I thoroughly agree that Jin-Roh and Serial Experiments Lain are gems. The whole hidden thing just depends on the age of the fans in question.

I'm absolutely here for Maria the Virgin Witch, surprisingly good, I love the accurately realistic medieval warfare depicted, how a one of the antagonists is pretty much confirmed to have been part of a mercenary group that operated in the region I lived and I had never seen depicted in popular media... and the main characters are likeable and compelling

My hidden gems are, first two i've seen mentioned once before, but the thrid one i've not seen anywhere. Ping Pong the Animation - Favourite show of all time, its much more about the human psyche and why people are motivated to do things then it is about ping pong. Also has incredible animation and art. Kaiji - Really dark and full of nail-biting moments. In the show the protagonist doesnt always get his way Cromartie Highschool - Just truly the most bizarre thing i've ever seen

The coolest hidden gems I know: Hana and Alice: Satsujin Jiken Minky Momo in The Bridge Over Dreams Kurozuka Kaiba, even though it’s a Masaki Yuasa anime KyousouGiga Aru Machi Kado no Monogatari, an awesome little 1960s film with animation that shockingly holds up very well, I think produced by Tezuka’s production company Harmony, the 2015 movie Kuuchuu Buranko UN-GO, even though it’s a Bones anime Maria-sama ga Miteiru Kujira no Chouyaku Terra e... (the TV show, not the movie, but the movie even more so) Mouryou no Hako Kyou no Asuka Show Dareka no Manazashi, even though it’s a Makoto Shinkai anime, and frankly, I think it’s his best work. Imawa no Kuno no Alice, even though it doesn’t have an ending Aki no Kanade Zaregoto, even though it’s a NisiOisiN show Mnemosyne, as a forgotten gem with problems but overall good AKB0048, the cool futuristic idol show based on the real life band The whole Senki Zesshou Symphogear franchise Hanayamata, a CGDCT madhouse show with good drama, up with Chihayafuru in covering an obscure sport Aru Tabibito no Nikki is a cute, short anime about a traveler Miss Hokusai

Dude Hana and Alice is a legit masterpiece, I know the animation style puts a lot of people off but I've watched it like 4 times and thoroughly enjoyed it each time. I never see it discussed and haven't heard of anyone else who's seen it other than people I've told to watch it, but everyone I've recommended it to who can get past the animation long enough to get into it ends up loving it.

Hana and Alice is definitely my favourite anime of all time, although the live action movie is my favourite movie of all time. So if you haven’t seen that, go see that. Also, nobody talks about Mushishi, I think because there isn’t much to say about it other than that it’s an experience. It’ll probably come up whenever someone talks about Kino’s Journey.

While everyone was fawning over "Maidens in your savage youth" there was another anime on the same streaming platform that was an absolute riot but stayed largely uncovered by reviewers. Wasteful Days of High School Girls, should be making it on everyone's top 5 lists of anime comedies.

@@Vantitas according to reviewers it has a similar theme. But I find that the pacing and delivery is much more like Western comedies and sitcoms. I liked it mostly because even though the material is heavy on japanese culture references, it has very few japanese comedy tropes. Just take a look at the OP. There's no other anime like it.
