The show contradicts Ciris age although in episode 1 she states that she's the same age as the queen when she won her first battle which would be 15 but in episode 7 when Geralt meets the Queen (after the scene with the assassins) he states that he's been gone for 12 years which would make Ciri 11 - 12 years old. 17:40 If you stop the video at this time, there is gold round thing attached to Geralt's sword. It's Renfri's medallion. Geralt took it when he left Blaviken. He gave it to king Foltest before the battle with Striga. Triss returned it back to Geralt after the battle. Basically the show runners made another circle. Geralt failed to save one princess in Blaviken (Renfri), but redeemed his mistake by saving another one in Temeria (Striga). In Episode 4 he attached Renfri's medallion to his sword. It's literally the Sword of Destiny :D 3:39 Queen Calanthe should be 12 years old when she won her 1st battle. Because Ciri is 12 years old. It's from the dialogue between Geralt and Calanthe. Geralt said something like: "I have not been in Cintra for 12 years". Well, when he was in Cintra, Pavetta was pregnant with Ciri. So, it means the time gap is not 30 years. It's 33 years. 21:54 Cmon. It's not Sparrow. It does not even look like a sparrow. It's Zirael. Also known to humans as Swallow =)

Apparently the reason they called him Jaskier (pronounced ya-skay or ya-sker I believe) is because that's his original name from the books before they were translated, and "dandelion" is actually a poor translation, it would be more like "buttercup" in a more direct translation but the translators/the game creators decided that was too feminine. It just dawned on me. "Rare Species" being the title, obviously makes one think of the golden dragon, but as you mentioned, this episode's theme is legacy and family. The more deeper hidden message that because both Yennefer and Geralt are sterile, nothing will come of their relationship naturally, but with Ciri - which they don't know yet at this point. So their legacy is also a "rare species" due to the act of destiny and Ciri possessing the powerful Elder Blood.

No. You are not reading too much into it. I think it shows her transformation. Aretuza is the kind of place where people have to fit an image to be ready to be assigned to a court. That is why they go through that whole makeover to "perfect" themselves but they take alot away from the new sorcerers too.
@Timbo5000
@Timbo5000 4 года назад
In the books there isn't this good/bad theme between the Northern Kingdoms and Nilfgaard, but there are certainly differences like that. In the North, there is a culture of having to impress one another among sorceresses and sorcerers. Much worse than in the series, actually. It is about setting up a fake version of yourself. A game of trying to manipulate others into being useful for you. On the one hand it's a culture of beauty, on the other it's fake and filled with hidden personal and political interests. Sorcerers/sorceresses really are their own powerful institution in the North, more or less separate from the royalty they advise. In Nilfgaard, the emperor rules completely and mages are below him. They are not their own institution, they are kept on a short leash and used purely in the interest of the Empire. They keep it functional, they don't care for beauty, all they care for (or are supposed to care for, because not all do and some conspire with the Northern conclave of mages) is service to the Empire, but this is more because they are not free to do so than of their own accord. So to answer your question; yes and no. You're not reading too much into the differences in the sense that Fringilla indeed would conform to the Northern sense of beauty and the political intrigue there, but in the South would have to conform to Nilfgaardian ideas of mages as tools to the emperor. But I think you are reading too much into this when seeing some kind of race injustices.

The symbol at the beginning of the third episode is not only a hand of a striga, but also a heraldic emblem of a lily - the crest of Temeria. And the reason for translating Jaskier to Dandelion was simple. In Polish it's the name of a flower (buttercup) that is very close to a word "jaskrawy" (flashy). So the translator chose a flower that has a name with a similar vibe: dandelion, like a dandy.

I’m a little unclear about something. The mage army defending that castle from Nilfgaard... I was thinking they needed to do that to KEEP Nilfgaard from attacking Cintra. But of course Cintra had fallen already a couple days before. Since that happened already, why did the mages think it was so important to stop Nilfgaard army there and then? Wasn’t the line from Nilfgaard that after they took Cintra down, they’d stop their move across the continent?

Nilfgaard wanted everybody to believe they would stop at Cintra and many either did or pretended to. The majority of the mages didn't care about Cintra, because it's rulers have refused to have their representative on the court for many years, which would allow the mages to influence them, as they did with other rulers. So it seemed like a small price to pay. But Nilfgaards goal was to conquer all of the northern kingdoms. Many didn't see through it because their actions made no sense strategically. If they wanted to take the whole north, it would be best to start at Sodden and surprise everybody, before anyone would even think to defend it. Only a couple of mages figured out Nilfgaards real plans and cared enough to try to stop them.

As for why there - a narrow passage through the canyon (Jaruga river's valley, I think) was perhaps the only place were a small group of people could stop an army. Anywhere else even the mages would stand no chance, not so few of them at least

Man, they really should have given all of the separate stories different titles or at least put up captions showing the years and done more do differentiate the different periods. It's hard enough to get a new audience to learn a large cast of characters even when events are taking place chronologically. I hope Netflix put up a new edit of the show in chronological order, like they did with Arrested Development. Not to replace this version of season 1, just to provide another way of watching the same story.

Thank you for straightening it out. I had no prior knowledge of the story and was trying to figure out what the hell was going on with all of the time shifting. Thought they were quantum leaping or something.

I still don't understand the timeline. But I love this show. 😅
@MaciejBogdanStepien

Ciri's timeline is Present. Geralt's timeline is Past. Yennefer's timeline is even more remote Past. Those two past timelines converge in E05. They all come together, gradually, over episodes 07 and 08. In the "present" Ciri is a teen. Geralt is in his 70+, Yennefer is 80+. Witchers age very slowly (4x slower than a human). Sorceresses keep themselves forever young.

Look at it this way... Ciri's scenes are in the present, and are in order. Yennefer's scenes start decades before, and they are gradually moving forward. The same is true of Geralt, though his scenes start a little more recently than Yennefer's. By the end of the season, the stories of everyone are in the present. Geralt meets Jaskier first. Then, he and Jaskier meet Yennefer. Then he meets Ciri.

If one isn't familiar with game or books I think the show is hard to follow. Wonder how this will be received more broadly. So many characters and politics of people and places the show doesn't establish. Add in the time line jumping and I think people will be lost.
