After so many people have reached out in response to this video, I finally created measured drawings you can purchase to help you with your project. Let me know what you think!
This was my second one of these. It's a great DIY built-in secret door hidden by an outswing bookcase with invisible hinges and a concealed latch! Open the bookcase to reveal a secret room in our attic. Check it out!
You'll need Hidden Door Hardware:
Hinge: amzn.to/3nFNpBR
Latch: amzn.to/37AUpua
Note: This is not Murphy Door or InvisiDoor hardware that folks use (they're much cheaper)!
My Saw: (many questions about this): amzn.to/3y8ntVn
My previous build video:

I'm curious how you decided where to place the hinge point? how far back from the front edge, how far from the side face.... and does it really matter as long as you are consistent between the positioning of the top and bottom hinge?
@onFIREouttakes
@onFIREouttakes 2 года назад
Placement for me was trial and error by creating a template and adjusting the hinge point until I got the swing and clearances right. For the bookcase to not hit the frame when swinging, you do have to place them right (and top and bottom need to match, of course).

Nice project. You mentioned caulking the bottom to conceal the gap, but wouldn't that interfere with the door opening? Or were you just talking about a gap line between the trim and the wall? I am thinking of doing a similar install on an attic opening, but thinking of how to keep a seal to limit drafts/air gaps. The sides are easy enough, but the pivot hinge complicates the top and bottom. Did you add any type of weather stripping?
@onFIREouttakes

Just caulking between the trim and wall. I added garage door trim seal to the top and bottom and it helps to seal that gap.

@onFIREouttakes

These hinges will not flip. The adjustable pin one will not support vertical weight. The bottom one has a ball bearing inside to make the opening smooth. You could fill the upper hole with a dowel though.

Their instructions are horrible!
@onFIREouttakes

Thanks, Todd! Yes, the instructions are terrible. I left half an inch gap on the hinge side and 1 inch on the latch side. The hinge point (trial and error for me) on my template is 3 in from the edge of the cabinet and 1 7/8” from the front of the shelf. I hope that helps!

This is great. I’m building an out swing door currently. My trim on the hinge side is numbing the door only allowing me to open about 1/2 way the door OR have a huge gap. Do I need to make an adjustment to my hinge positioning?
@onFIREouttakes
@onFIREouttakes 10 месяцев назад
Yes, move the hinge point closer to the center and it should allow the door to swing clear of that trim.

Can you overload this style of hinge? It seems like they might bind if you have enough weight away from the axis the door rotates about.

@onFIREouttakes
@onFIREouttakes Год назад
Sorry, I’ve never pushed it. They are very robust hinges. The bottom hinge holds all the weight. The top just keeps it from tipping and holds no weight. If you plan to fully load it with books it may give you trouble. If it’s just the bookcase with some decorations, you may be okay.

How much clearance from the top do you need to position the door past the set screw and hinge bolt that sits proud of the top horizontal jamb? I would like to maximize the height of the shelf. I guess they’re variables in play here. Ie depth of shelf…width of jamb rough opening etc. but do you remember yours?

Can you access that hinge pin from the top since you had to cut out for the whole top hinge? Saving drilling that pin hole on top of shelve.

Unfortunately, no. When you install it this way you have to have that hold to access the screw that adjusts the pin.

A couple of things are unclear to me. Good project. 1. I tried doing this with a small sample but I had difficulty pivoting the top into the hinge after fixing the bottom. I needed to increase the gap. What is the clearance you left between top of door and frame as well as left, right and bottom? 2. How did such a large gap at the bottom get caulked and filled?

Hi i want to do something similar to this in my ensuite bathroom, there was a standard depth bathroom cabinet but behind it there is a 0.5m deep void space above the stairs, i want to have a standard opening bathroom cabinet but then press a latch or something which will then swing the whole cabinet open to reveal the much bigger storage concealed behind it. any ideas ?
@onFIREouttakes
@onFIREouttakes 2 года назад
That's a tough one. These hinges might work for that application. You'd just swing the entire cabinet with a door on the front. Clearance on that hinge side will be an issue though.

I have no experience with them and how they mount but if it’s accessible from the outside to manually actuate (or change batteries) it should work. Maybe a magnet to hold it closed too so it doesn’t just pop open every time you walk by.

Great video! Hello from Japan. I have a question. I want change a door to a room to be hidden but I am afraid the other side would look odd. I wanted to make a narrow shelf for small souvenirs on both sides. Since I am not sure how the hinge works, I assume there could be some issues for making the door look hidden from the other side due to some gaps between the door and frame you won't be able to fill. Am I correct in thinking so? It is okay for the other side to look odd but I just want to know if there would be gaps. I cannot find a video of how the door would look from the opposite side.
@onFIREouttakes
@onFIREouttakes Год назад
I don’t think it’s possible to trim out both sides to make it look good with these hinges from both sides. One side will always lack the trim necessary to hide that it’s a door.

@@onFIREouttakes Hey Seth. Nice to approach you again. So I am now building the structure that allows access to the Hideout. I made 2 book shelves out of 3. The one that is in the center (the one I didn't make yet) matches the dimensions of the opening to the Hideout. Above the book shelves I have plasterboard so the wall made of plaster will have the same continuity as the bookshelf. In the opening in the place where I am going to attach the hinge mechanism I have a brick full of cement inside (this brick is hidden behind the plaster wall) I have two questions: 1) At the backside of the bookshelves should I put a wood or do you think a thin plywood will work? I am asking this because it would be much easier with the last option. Plywood I need the one that we can bend it. 2) Can I set the hinge mechanism in the door frame- in this case inside the brick (it was the reason I put it)? Or should I install a wood just below to attach the hinge? Thank you so much again

I have to say, I admire your shop. Those battery powered Ryobi power tools you use? How well are they lasting? Also...I'd suggest a magnetic latch inside to keep the shelf door closed. Got a question. We have a mobile home and I'd like a French door style hidden door to lead into the middle bedroom we are redoing to make into a laundry and storage room. Cause we need one more than a second bedroom. Any ideas how to do that? My domestic partner is the crafty one with power tools. I just do the blueprints and come up with the ideas... And hold the flashlight. Yes, you can laugh at that.

Thanks, Becky! I like Ryobi and they have been great tools. Lasting well. I've tossed a couple of my older batteries, 5 years old or so, because they stopped holding a charge for long but other than that I've been very happy. Magnet latch is a good idea, thanks! If it's an outswing style of french door you seek, maybe this design will work (just add a mirror image of it on the opposite side). There are many more videos out there for inswing doors if that's what you're looking for.

Depending on the type of door you’re doing, ie. full length or short like this one. If it’s full length, you can add a spring loaded gate caster to roll on and help support the load. The hidden hinges take a pretty good amount of load so this shorter door can get away with just hinges.

This is an out swing as it comes out from the hidden attic into the room. There are easier designs/hinges if you want the bookshelf to swing into the wall.
