After watching the video do you think the Star-Spangled Banner is a "masonic" song?

I would say it was most likely a Masonic drinking song because not only the National Anthem, but the song My Country ‘Tis of thee, or “America,” seems to be almost a parody of “God Save The King.” I would imagine songs like these were a mockery of the British monarchy, so what better way to celebrate freedom than to mock your would be oppressors while having a few beers? 🍻 This kind of stuff is what made these people and our country so special.

Thank you, Illustrious Brother ... I had always heard that the melody was an old "college" drinking song. There is a song that has overtones in the lyrics that sound very masonic in nature, that I am adapting for use in my lodge ... "Swimming To The Other Side" by Pat Humphries ... you may find the chord progression familiar. Jim Hammitt, 32nd (Valley of Hartford NMJ) & KYCH

A few comments regarding the tune "Anacreon in Heaven" and its use in the United States. The song was written for the Anacreonic Society in London, England and first published in 1778. The tune (but not the lyrics) was written by John Stafford Smith and is believed to have been a drinking song for the society as well as its formal anthem or theme song. The tune gained some popularity in the US and was used as the tune for the "Song for George Washington's Birthday" of 1798. In 1805, F.S. Key wrote a poem entitled "Poem" in honor of Stephen Decatur, Jr. and Charles Stewart upon their return from the Barbary War. This poem was set to the tune of "Anacreon in Heaven" as the song "The Warriors' Return" or "When the Warrior Returns". The poem "Defence of Fort McHenry" was structurally the same as "Poem" and as Key specified was also set to the tune of "Anacreon in Heaven."

The history...its like a joyful hug as I reflect on the landscape of my mind, recalling my experiences and knowledge curated from childhood until now. Thank for enriching the Anthem with renewed life with, for me, a more meaningful resonance.

I thought it was just a limerick, like playful rewording. I don’t think they meant to do it intentionally, it just kind of evolved that way!

MAYNARD!!!! It's Mary from the Ride Across Maryland! I've been a local historian for a very long time and the song isn't the KEY = the author is!!!!

Hi Mary! We can't prove Key was a Mason. He was surrounded. But no mention of his joining a Lodge.

There is a difference between a " song" (specific lyrics to a specific tune) and a "tune" which simple is a series of musical notes. Musical tunes from the past, especially those from folk songs, get reused all the time..

Interesting , since Francis Scott Key was Catholic. Maybe things were different then.

My understanding is that he was originally buried in Baltimore against his wishes. He was later removed to Frederick by his family. The Grand Master and his line Officiated at his re-internment. Might there be in the MD GL records a clue as to his being a Brother Mason. Maybe a notice for Brothers to attend?

His burial was officiated by the Grand Master Shayrock and his Grand Line. Would there be a clue to this in the Grand Masters papers?
@ScottishRiteMasons
@ScottishRiteMasons 11 дней назад
Didn’t know that. Good clue! But it must’ve been some sort of rededication because Francis got key died in 1843 and Shryock wasn’t even BORN until 1859.

I did watch this yesterday. This looks like it was pulled and reposted? Audio edit? Well It's still good content. I did not notice anything odd with the previous version. If that was the issue.
