Breaking down the third episode, titled "Family", of the new Don't Hug Me I'm Scared TV Show, the show exclusively airing on Channel 4 based on the hit web series brought to us by Becky Joan and Joe Pelling.
Don't Hug Me I'm Scared is a British surreal horror series created by Becky Sloan and Joseph Pelling. The original web series consists of six episodes, released from 29 July 2011 to 19 June 2016 through the artists' website, RU-vid, and Vimeo. The series combines segments in live action, puppetry, traditional animation, flash animation, clay animation, and computer animation.
Each episode starts like a typical children's series, consisting of anthropomorphic puppets akin to those featured in Sesame Street and other popular children's television programmes. The series parodies and satirizes these TV programmes by contrasting this childlike, colourful environment and its inhabitants against disturbing themes; each episode features a surreal plot twist in the climax, including psychedelic content and imagery involving graphic violence, dark humour and existential and psychological horror. The six episodes explore and discuss the subjects of creativity, time, love, technology, diet, and dreams.
In 2020, it was announced that Don't Hug Me I'm Scared will be airing on Channel 4 as a television series on 23 September 2022.

Red Guy seems to always be the one who is most concerned with having some connection to the "outside world". this seems to be a running theme of his. needing to immediately answer ringing phones could be an extension of that general trait.

and to add to that, Duck Guy is most concerned with his image or how he is perceived by others. and Yellow Guy is most concerned with fitting in or being part of the "in group".

@@roeerr1866 yea becky or joe mentioned that they made this season during lockdowns the past couple years. and according to them they went a little insane while making it lol. it makes a lot of sense when put in that context. in a way they felt like they were in hell and unable to leave the house, forced to make this crazy show about puppets just so they could earn a living lmao. i think the show is emphasizing the things that motivates us as individuals and the anxiety that accompanies those needs when they are not met or left unfulfilled. these anxieties people experienced to a much greater extent during the lockdowns.

He represents the frontal lobe of the brain, which in part deals with communication. As pointed out, in the original RU-vid series Red is seen leaving the house, trying to call the others via a phonebooth, appearing in what we're to assume is the "real world," and ultimately stopping Roy.

I like how Red guy clearly doesnt fit in when he's with other Red Guys. Like he is clearly the most dry one of the trio, but when put in a situation with those like him, it shows that the other two have rubbed off on him, so he cant quite fin in. Stuck between two worlds... which is basically what his character is all about.

Honestly this episode was probably the creepiest of all the episodes to me. The eeriness of the very realistic home with the photos of former family members all crossed out hinted at something very dark without explicitly stating it. I look forward to your analysis of the next episode; there are some good easter eggs there, like items found in the trash can and bits of foreshadowing, that definitely are worth looking at.

It's also interesting how the Yellow Guy is the mother, a role that doesn't (and shouldn't) have to be fulfilled by a blood relative. It highlights how reductive the nuclear family is, as Yellow Guy could've been adopted as a sibling but that wouldn't make them a "family"
@limonx6778
@limonx6778 Год назад
This ep reminded me of the general feeling of having an "unconventional" family as a kid and seeing most kids shows talk about families in a very reductive way. Here the twins outright say what is and isn't a family, but I think it's meant to be an exaggeration.

ngl the scene where red guy finally meets his family hits pretty close to home for me. my family have been pretty absent throughout me life, with my mother being the only person who actually ever cared about me and the only family member I've ever really known - I know my dad's still alive and I have two older half-sisters but I've never met any of these people (i tried to get in contact with one of my half sisters but to know avail). And I hardly ever see my grandparents due to family drama surrounding them. In that sense I can relate to red guy because I'd also like to see my family, all of them, but I know that they don't really care in the end, which I'm assuming is what he's dealing with in that episode aswell.

I’m speculating that The Family is a rival television program. It’s like a cross over, we got a song number in one show and then we go to the other show. Except the second half was more of a kidnapping. So Roy only came to save Yellow Guy because the rival show kidnapped his actor son. How dare they take his torture victim and get the chicken sponsorship! The audacity! So Yum-Yum was the only option. Or even with out the speculated context. Roy didn’t save Yellow guy out of love. It was to eat the chicken and punish The Family

As someone mention I think this episode is main message is that family has finally loss it meaning. With red even though his family is blood related and they go along with what he want to do he can’t simply get along with them. It more of Red feeling so out of place with his own family despite being blood related. It’s not a bad thing mind you but Red barely see a line dividing family and friends. Green is the opposite where he can get along with his family but also see his friends as just as much family to him. There isn’t a line between family and friends for him. Yellow is being taught by both the teacher and his friends in a way about this kind but is also given the most negative experience with family. Family who only want him when they need something. I do like a lot of your points about this episode. There is something I really like to mention if you haven’t noticed yet but green always defend the group. It’s shown more in the next episode but whenever someone tries to break the status quo of the group, he always first to speak up and defend the group.

ok so, for the longest time people have seen roy as the mastermind who's in control of everything, but i'm starting to think that maybe he's the opposite. maybe he's actually not supposed to be here at all and is trying to break in to help his son through the whole series he's always been in the background observing things in weird places, like he's hiding from the real people in control and trying to find ways of getting in. whenever he directly makes an appearance, it derails everything. like in the time episode where yellow guy introduces him and the song just stops like he wasn't supposed to be there, and red guy has to interrupt to move on. it happens when he shows up again in the same episode, and they just ignore his presence and keep the show going. in the family episode too, him showing up didn't feel like it was supposed to happen. you can see him walk by the window before he shows up, like he was watching from there and decided to interfere when yellow guy was in actual danger there's also the fact that the only times he's ever intentionally shown up were when yellow guy was in danger. the first time was in episode 6, and he shows up to stop red guy from touching the machine because of how distressed yellow guy is. then he shows up again in this episode to save yellow guy from the family, and i think he did show up to save yellow guy. i always saw the way he pushed yellow guy as him telling him to get out

SPOILERS I feel like the episodes of the tv series are parallels of the RU-vid series. Creativity and jobs ( the teacher says all this stuff they can do, but things go off the rails and ends with the teacher leaving, plus jobs and creativity starts with ideas) Family and food ( teachers are a group with intentions involving food. Teachers target yellow guy while duck guy resist the lessons ) Love and friendship ( friendship and love are similar emotions, red guy and duck guy accidentally upset yellow guy, the teacher is a bug that targets yellow guy using the fact that yellow guy is upset to their advantage and warren could possibly be Michael. Duck guy says pesky bee in both) Computer and Technology ( Robotic teacher that tries to teach why technology is important, one of the three leaves the group after wising up while the other two get trapped in a checkerboard room, there's a blackout) Time and Transportation ( old teacher, a character dies of old age, theirs a bit of foreshadowing of the finale in both, time and Transportation as lessons compliment each other, and theirs an appearance of roy) I don't know how death and dreams go together though

If you notice an episode two, I believe, death the duck comes back and basically meets himself a.k.a.: oh the claymation thing that turned into him, and at the end one of the ducks gets killed and you know it’s the original duck that got killed because when his head falls in the blood spills there’s maggots in the blood Since he was in the casket. So after episode two the duck guy isn’t even the original duck guy.

I know she may be dead or not in the picture but we never get any insight from the creators or anything it’s almost sad but I think Roy divorced her and took Yellow-guy or she abandoned him but I don’t think so. My theroy is that the character of Lesie who is introduce in the episode about electricity is ment to symbolize Yellow Guy's (and to an extent Red Guy and Duck's as well going by the whole David theroy) mom and possibly even being the creator of the "show" with the show of DHMIS (referenceing back to the og web series) and haveing based the show and all 3 characters on her possibly now deceased son (David) at different point within his life. It most likey that when we encounter her in the attic it could be a metapor for the concept of meeting your deceased loved ones after death. Roy probably went insane and started abuse David due to become overcome with greif and the stress of haveing to care for a child all by himself. But thats just my take on the whole thing.
