Zwischenzug means move in between. The move was indeed in between the bishop and the queen.(lol)

A cool exchange sac, and even cooler zwischenzug. Thanks Daniel.

The saving zwisch in this game reminds me of the kind of sequence Stockfish shows me every time I think i come up with something cool. It's hard to see Qg6 leaving that rook undefended banking on a queen trap. :)

Loved the zwischenzug vid the other day, was a great format!

That's the kind of move I get ready to put in a cheat report for if it happened online. :p

I have always thought of a zwischenzug as a move that breaks up an expected sequence of moves, especially captures, i.e, when a player eschews a recapture to make a greater threat elsewhere. The move …g7-g5 here is an amazing interference move, but I personally wouldn’t call it a zwischenzug.

Nice game and nice win, Daniel! Is "g5" a zwiszenzug though? Seems more like "the only defensive move" for black.

Have played and studied chess all my life and will keep doing so but it's intricate beauty never ceases to amaze me. Isn't it funny how we're more likely to see such things after we've taken the plunge like your exchange sac here? That could make you doubt your instincts but just finding such gems makes it seem like it's worth it...once your competitive days are behind you :)

Great video; I find it amazing that GMs make things look so easy. ...c5 looked so natural to me, but was just ill timed in this particular situation (with hindsight for clear reasons). I feel mentality is also important here. Had black given the position as a puzzle it's not unlikely that they'd have found g5. There are some self-fulfilling prophecies in chess. These Zwischenzugs are difficult to spot but I feel at every level are quite decisive.

I think we as players greatly under estimate the importance of fundamentals in the opening. Mostly because we get away with poor ones frequently. We have to remember, when we're playing black specifically we're down a tempo. When white has developed their pieces and castled, if we dilly dally around making pawn moves when we haven't taken care of business, we can get in big trouble quickly. Suddenly, we'll find our self unable to develop that last piece in the way and then unable to castle. And then our king is screaming GET ME OUT OF HERE! :)

@@LateCloser Yes, very true. I notice also a massive rating gab. If I play against weaker players I tend to feel VERY comfortable after move 10, whereas against higher rated opponents I'm often already struggling. For me there is also the idea that "I should know" the opening and a desire to "not let my opponent know I'm out of book" and that kind of mental garbage.

g4 is the kind of move that flashes through your mind but at my level (1800) you're not quite sure if it's worth playing it or not as black...
