I love my Hidden Woodsmen 25L day ruck so you could only imagine how happy I was to see The Hidden Woodsmen come out with a 35L ruck! Its basically like the day ruck ewith an added kidney belt and side pouches. I chose mine in Pencott Greenzone camo. I show it here and also talk a little about my current winter sleep system.

Big D " Leader of the Pack" and "Minimal Nick" in the woods. Great looking piece of kit Sir. Always enjoy your project pieces. I'm with you , on the idea that as you get older , you pack stuff that keeps you feeling good. With a much bigger Nick camping with you now, and his minimalist designation, it would be cool to see both of you compete in one of your old school mystery pack of 10 items or 15 items, chosen by the other guy. I'd really like to see a person who gets to live the "realbigmonkey" camping philosophy up close, put his own spin on it. Does the heart good, to know you guys are going to have some beans and bush coffee. Thanks for the info , and the invite to tag along. As always, looking forward to seeing you in the next one.

As usual, you never disappoint in your vids and unique ideas. I love the idea of the palate cover and heat reflective material. Where do you even fine such stuff? Pencott does make a winter/fall camo pattern. I've seen it on military packs from Europe. Great new packs for you both. Just because you don't feel cold doesn't mean you aren't. I learned that the hard way standing in line one winter during the snow. It took me a full day to warm up. Take Care and Stay Safe, y'all.

Howdy Big Monkey its been awhile since I have commented but the old man was inspired today. I like the way you think in regards to building your pack system tall with the pack rather than horizontal, good thinking. For years I have used the Medium Alice Pack and am a believer in the external frame with a shelf on the bottom as it can be used to carry other things (meat, water, wood etc.) Also, I like "pockets" for organization. For example in my case: Pocket 1, Waterproof med kit; Pocket 2, Waterproof fire kit, navigation, small binoculars, tools; Pocket 3, Gloves, cordage, extra socks, beanie hat, neck gator, scarf etc.; Added left side pocket, water bottle, cup, water purification and expandable water storage bag; Added right side pocket, cooking gear. All sleeping attached to bottom shelf. Rain gear, snake gators stored inside top flap.

Hello Richard and Im glad you liked it. Sounds good the way you pack your Alice. Thanks for watching
@richardstone5241
@richardstone5241 2 года назад
@@Reallybigmonkey1 You're welcome buddy! One more thing you might consider trying, I found a plastic trash can that fits perfectly into the ALICE, the idea is to keep the sides of the pack from collapsing making it difficult when rummaging through it. It works great and can also be a water container etc. at camp. Also, you can wrap cordage or repelling line around it for internal storage if desired. You have a great channel and info as always. Keep up the good work!

Another fun and informative video, Dave! Love the sleep system. I have the MSS… definitely will keep you warm but just so bulky and heavy. You’ll have to share with us how your system preforms in the very cold weather! The reflective pad at the bottom is a very clever idea. You would do well at developing ideas for an outdoor gear company if you ever decided on something like that. Looking forward to “Dave’s Dome”! Lol! Your shelter videos are my favorites! Hey o to Nick!

I have been keeping my sleeping bag in a drybag, on top of my pack (modded lk35), with my shelter system on the bottom. It means that can leave my kit ready to go, more or less. Just pick a shelter/sleeping bag combination to suit the conditions, stick in the consumables and you're ready to go. Particularly useful if you're working in the woods on and off for half the year. Nice looking pack. Stick a frame on it and it would be close to ideal.

Good stuff Dave & Nick. I don't take an axe as I've no need for one at this stage of my journey. I'm going to use alcohol or gas stoves mainly or a bushbox to cook with and avoid fires as much as I can, reason being most of my camps are stealth camps and a fire will give you away - you might as well set off flares - "Hey I'm Here" - as I'll be on someone else's land. I do like the pack, not sure that the camo isn't too light in colour and if they took the shine off it too - maybe toned down it would be fine all year or as Nick says have two. I hang boots in a bag in the vestibule of the tent or off the daisy of a hammock. My socks - thick wool with a synthetic thinner sock underneath or over the top, allow for warmth and the clean replacements go in a bag with my spare clothes at the bottom of my sleeping bag.

As always, another excellent video on a new piece of kit. I could not believe just how much equipment you were able to get in that new rucksack 😃. I did like the unusual cammo but agreed with Nick that it would be better in summer and stand out a bit more in winter. I also like to have a hydration bladder in my rucksacks as I tend to be more inclined to drink often that way. The sleep system is superb and I learnt from you a long time ago, to have a complete change of clothes for sleeping in👍. I liked the idea of the round tin holding dry firelighting materials in too! I have Silky F180 Pro and I just keep that in my pocket for quick easy access. I keep my Silky BigBoy Pro in the side pocket of my pack. For my small pack it's a simple mesh bottle pocket and up higher is a strap with an _airloc buckle_ that can be adjusted to tighter or looser and that keeps the saw from bouncing around and flying out of the pocket. On my tall pack, it has on both sides a tall narrow zip-up pocket, which my Silky BigBoy fits in very well.

Hi Dave, another great video of "What's in Daves bag". Maybe sometime you'd show me/us how you set your sewing machine up to sew that reflective stuff to that waterproof stuff. Also, maybe sometime when Nick isn't around you can show us where you stash your Snickers bars. I wouldn't want my son around when I'm dumping my bag out and a dozen Snickers fall out. I think that green camo would be great in a spring and early summer environment. I need to work on a ground pad to go under my air mattress. P.S. My boots aren't going anywhere near my head when I'm sleeping.
@Reallybigmonkey1

Hello Ralph and I'm glad you liked it! I don't do anything special with my machine. It's a Singer 4423 heavy duty so it's no big deal to go through thick stuff. Lol, Nick and I keep separate chocolate stashes. Take care and thanks for watching
@ralphwatten2426
@ralphwatten2426 2 года назад
@@Reallybigmonkey1 I like the idea of separate sweets stashes. That way no body gets shorted. I have an early 60's Singer 503A that chomps through the heavy stuff pretty well too. Does your machine have an adjustable presser foot and if it does, do you adjust it light or heavy for that reflective stuff onto that kind of rubbery, strong stuff. No tarps for me unless I'm under it while it's raining. By myself it's a TCOP and with my dog it's a TC2P. Thanks to you and Nick for all the great videos.

Another spectacular video, gents! :-). That’s a nice bags all right. The first thing I noticed when you open the first pic was the bright orange reflection, and right away I could see that it would make a huge difference when it came to finding something in the bag. Thanks for the tour of your rucks’ contents; there’s lots of food for thought In that presentation. It was nice to see your set up and your new system for sleeping; I was hoping to be a bit at the end so that you guys could reflect on the new system in the morning, having test driven it overnight. Because really, no matter how impressive a system looks, and no matter how well thought out, it’s experience that tells us if it achieved everything you set out to achieve. I don’t mind telling you that I’m paying close attention to the new things that you’re doing with your sleep set up, with an eye to getting mine back to the point where I can get comfortable sleeping on the ground without having to pack a cot. PS. As Nick videod Dave of walking away with the new pack on, all I could think is that if the colours are slightly different, it would be really easy to put that bag down and walk away a few feet, only to have trouble finding it again. It’s amazing what’s a visual pattern technology is coming to. It was dazzling!

Thanks, Im glad you liked it Daphne! The sleep system works very well, at least for Georgia. For extreme cold Im not sure yet. Since I was showcasing the pack I didnt want to drag the video into the next Moring. Pencott makes several other camo patterns with this same technology if you have time to look them up.Thanks for watching

Well, in refference to Nick, considering the scarcity of food in the forrest, someone has to feed those starving critters, including Mosquitoes, Midges, Gnats etc. So Nick is just practicing an older form of the Noble Practice of Forrest Husbandry. 😊 So well done Nick, just stay away from the junk food. Those Mosquitoes and such could have health issues from a bad diet and then the Government will waste money on numerous studies to determine why the Mosquitoes are sick.

I really like that camo pattern. I’m like Nick, I like to pack lite as possible. Notice when you were walking that pack looks very stable, thanks to the kidney belt. If I was carrying a pack that size I would probably only fill it to bout 60% capacity. Amazing though how much gear you can get in those side pockets. With any pack I prefer pockets on the side rather than the back, makes the pack more stable. I’m gonna look for one of those down blankets. I always put my sleep gear and xtra clothing in a dry bag. Back in the day didn’t have that stuff. Thanks to you and Nick for a great video, I really enjoyed it.

I don't know how likely it is to find the right size, but that plastic backing reminded me of a fresnel lens sheet which would be a great backup for getting a fire going if you have the sun available plus you'd still have some support/stiffening. But you couldn't really use it as a cutting board/table/etc. Another great video. You can pack/organize an amazing amount of gear in a 35L day pack.

Man ! That is a great camo pattern ! That comes as close as anything I have seen , to matching the " bright " vivid greens of summer . Have always wondered why they don't make a camo closer to nature in the summer . A tent in that pattern , and you'd blend in great . I like that pack . But ole Gubs has waaaaay too many already :D Interesting take on a pillow . Yes , you sure did , get a lot of stuff in the 35 L . Be safe out there folks .... Gubs
