Katherine (Famke Janssen) has to kill "Charlie" to protect Emily (Dakota Fanning).
FILM DESCRIPTION:
A newly single father discovers his daughter is caught up in a web of evil in this thriller. David Callaway (Robert De Niro) has been left to raise his nine-year-old daughter, Emily (Dakota Fanning), on his own after the unexpected death of his wife. David is at first amused to discover that Emily has created an imaginary friend named "Charlie," but it isn't long before "Charlie" develops a sinister and violent side, and as David struggles with his daughter's growing emotional problems, he comes to the frightening realization that "Charlie" isn't just a figment of Emily's imagination. Hide and Seek also stars Famke Janssen, Dylan Baker, and Amy Irving.

Dakota Fanning has done so much- War of the Worlds, I am Sam, Man on Fire, Charlotte's Web the Runaways, Push, Uptown Girls. WHY oh WHY does she not have an Oscar?! I have her autograph! She is just awesome!

Agree, she is too good an actress. The same goes for Dicaprio. It took decades until he finally got his Oscar, and that is why I can't trust the Oscar anymore, it doen't make much sense, at least for me.

I think it's cool that in 2023, Dakota stars in The Equalizer 3 with Denzel Washington, who she was in Man On Fire with. And she also plays Susan's daughter in Equalizer 3, who was the neighbor in this movie.

this movie isn't about a ghost, its a movie about a man with a split personality as a result of his wife's death. So the murdering demonic side is called charlie. And dakota fanning plays his daughter

Actually I think he already had a split personality disorder and while the "Charlie"-side of him was in charge he killed his wife out of rage because of her cheating and made it look like a suicide... hence the repeated messages throughout the rest of the movie stating that David is responsible for her death while those messages were actually composed by Charlie in order to try to "wake" David up to make him realize his crime and other side because in him doing so Charlie gets the chance to take over completely like he did in the end of the movie. It's a mental illness which clearly also ended up affecting Emily as suggested in all of the alternative endings.

He basically had a split personality...he probably already had the genes for it, but then "environmental" factors (in this case, finding out that his wife was cheating on him) basically triggered the gene into becoming active. His daughter also has somewhat a split personality as well. If you have seen the ending of this movie, you will see that it is clearly evident.

Dissociative identity disorder or multiple personalities doesn't develop suddenly in adulthood! It develops in children younger than 6 who were tortured....... It's the mind's genius way of dealing with the agony. It's not genetic. Dissociation can develop because of stress or trauma, but it would be blackouts not a new personality.

it's about emily and her father, her mother had just died and they wanted to start fresh by moving, emily makes a imaginary friend named charlie, over the nights there are messages on the wall above the bathtub where the mother died, after a while and after a few deaths the father find out he's charlie and he has a split personality. he goes nuts and plays hide and seek with the girl who calls her doctor (i think it was her doctor, something along those lines) emily hides in a cave she found at the beginning of the movie where the doctor finds charlie about to attack emily, she shoots him and adopts emily, at the end of the movie it shows a drawing of her and the doctor but theres another face next to her. and it just ends....i hope that helped! even tho i'm 10 months late XD

Starts out with a seemingly happy family. Allison is the mom, David is the dad (who is also a psychiatrist), and Emily is their daughter. Allison was found dead in the bathtub one night with her wrists cut. It seemed like suicide. David decides to move into another town upstate for a fresh start. They meet the sheriff and the neighbors. The neighbors had lost their daughter to cancer and the husband was drawn to Emily who reminded him of his daughter. Not long after, creepy messages on the bathroom walls are written, their cat gets killed, and David's new girlfriend Elizabeth gets murdered. Emily blames it on "Charlie." A person David never sees or meets. Emily's psychiatrist comes over for her wellbeing after a frightening phonecall from Emily telling her she doesn't wanna play with Charlie anymore. After some flashbacks of things that happened in the past, David comes to the chilling realization that he's Charlie. His Charlie personality takes over and he tries to kill Emily and her psychiatrist.

Spacemedood basically davids wife died and his split personality takes control of him called Charlie and he basically goes physco and starts murdering people this happens only because of if he is friends with Emily he will do it but David doesnt realise that Emily's imaginary friend Charlie is him I know it is so confusing perhaps I might have helped a bit Its funny cause my name is Emily
