Hideyoshi Toyotomi - Warriors Analysis 

I have a ton of respect for Hideyoshi however he made more than a few stupid decisions that came to haunt his family.

Basically, Nobunaga was the necessary first step towards unification through drastic, ruthless measures, but that approach made him a lot of enemies, which would render a peaceful rule impossible. Hideyoshi's approach of effectively befriending his enemies would work better for peaceful rule, but getting there would be near impossible without a strong power based to intimidate the more powerful warlords into surrender. But combine Nobunaga's power base with Hideyoshi's magnetic personality and it works to an extent. Ieyasu is more of a balance between the two, allowing him to serve as the final piece of the puzzle, perhaps thansk to his having served under both of his predecessors and learned the pros and cons of their methods. Nobunaga in SW4 strikes me as if he's trying to goad everyone else into betraying him and taking over, perhaps intending Hideyoshi to succeeed him specifically. It seems like Nobunaga knows his rule could never last and is instead trying to produce a successor to finish the work he's begun.

I wouldn't call Hideyoshi’s ideals a “noble cause”, especially after how he personally beheaded Nagamasa's 9 year old child and placed it on a stake.

This is where the Mocking bird idiom comes from. Nobunaga says kill the bird of it doesn't sing. He's a take no prisoners kind of ruler. Hideyoshi says make the bird want to sing, he makes his enemies surrender to him. Ieyasu says wait for the bird to sing. Which explains his patience and how waited for kobayakawa to join him at Sekigahara even though he had to nudge him a bit.
