This is part two of the Amazon Jungle adventure where we're relocating some Emerald Tree boas and Amazon Tree boas from a highly trafficked area of the Courantyne River in Suriname and bringing them to secret locations deeper in the jungle where these snakes can live free from hunters and trappers.

Thank you for humanizing the hunters/trappers and traders and explaining how the trade of wild animals is a complex issue. You show your intelligence and credibility by not presenting info as sensational or black and white. I've always been impressed by how you communicate and educate, and I think you will bring so much favor to the reptile-keeping community.

I believe most of the snake skins are coming from the Florida everglades python hunters. Fl law requires that the snakes be humanly dispatched, alligator leather probably mostly comes from commercial alligator market.

I gotta say your conversations with the locals and trappers and people you are dealing with are very interesting and eye opening to others ways of life. To really interrupt the trade, you'd have to find another way for the hunters who catch them to make a living. Possibly pay them to refrain from hunting for export, or paying them to do something like documenting the species' they'd hunt instead. Supply them with trail cameras to maintain, for example. Or perhaps cultivating species that have become threatened to release? They're not getting rich doing what they're doing. Pay them slightly better than what they're getting now for something that helps their environment and I'd bet they'd be glad to change. But a change like that would take a concerted effort by a sizeable group to fund and organize.

Hi Bob. Here's a good question. My exo terra Terrarium 60x45x45 is arriving soon with the heat emitter, inkbird thermostats etc. The breeder I got my ball python of just said it's the worst move I could make, they're not designed for snakes, don't hold the temperature properly and cause respiratory infections etc and nobody that breeds snakes would use one? I've just spent $£400 heeeelllp lol My new ball is an albino pied 😁
@GreenRoomPythons
@GreenRoomPythons 9 месяцев назад
It might be a bit big for a baby but it'll be just fine for an adult. Snake keepers should not be keeping their snakes like breeders do. Sometimes breeders don't have a frame of reference for how to keep snakes other than the way they do it. Check out my ball python care guide and that should help you out

I hope all these animals get to spend the rest of their lives where they belong. Especially the Emeralds. 90-95% of the imported emerald tree boas do not make in captivity. They are a difficult species to keep and with the parasites and the travel/conditions to make it to where they are being sold they do not fair well.

I appreciate your effort, but the native/local snake hunters can go anywhere you go, plus they have internet. When growing up hunting small game it made more sense, and less time to go remote to find the game, same for fishing. When I lived in the Keys we used flat boats to go where most boats could not go and fished the shallows in and around the mangroves. Want to help make it difficult to sell wild caught? Breed more affordable captive bred babies. Highlight on the affordable. This has already happened with ball pythons, as you know. Why would anyone pay 25 dollars for a wild ball python with parasites when a captive bred can be bought for 50 dollars. Same for parakeets, nobody is buying wild caught parakeets.
@GreenRoomPythons
@GreenRoomPythons 9 месяцев назад
I appreciate your thoughts on this but that is not something that would have gone over our heads ;-) The fact is that these trappers and hunters stay in one general area because they don't need to go any farther. There are plenty of animals within the range that they hunt and trap. They're also not specifically looking for snakes - they make more money on other animals. I actually mentioned this in the video But I realize many people comment without watching the video. I'm very confident that we found safe spots to relocate these snakes.
@addaptinginthedark
@addaptinginthedark 9 месяцев назад
Breeders have to be able to make money as wel, and a lot of that happens with pricier animals. Obviously many love to just get snakes out there, but a breeding business isn't going to stay afloat selling all 50 dollar snakes. (I know it was just a price example and there is a wider cheap range than that.) And I'm not a breeder, I have no skin in this game. lol
