In this video, we are brazing thin stainless steel with SSQ-6 Silver Solder Paste, and presenting a muggyweld.com customer testimonial using the SSQ-6 on a replica Han Solo DL-44 Blaster.
Scott Juarez writes, So far so good; I've done between 10-15 of these so far and haven't had many issues. In fact, the only issues I had were where the threads of the studs would suck the solder up into the threaded spacer during the melt and reduce the solder on the surface bond, and broke loose during recoil. Easily fixed with a second application.
Since then, I haven't had a failure, and my own gun has been about 1000 rounds through it.
The 56% Silver Paste comes in a one-ounce syringe. When you are ready to use the product, just twist off the end cap. Keep the cap handy to twist it back on when the syringe is being stored. Store in the refrigerator, if possible. Caution: Do not store near edible items. If you refrigerate SSQ-6, please store in a "chemical only" designated refrigerator. You will find your dispenser. also known as an applicator tip, in a plastic bag on the syringe. Push the dispenser in, give the tip a quarter turn, and you're ready to go. The SSQ-6 is excellent for the novice and the pro. It's straightforward to use, and it gives you all the strength a brazing rod can provide and more.
In this video, we are trying to hide the brazing joint. Because the paste is so strong, all we need is a couple of dots of paste. The paste is used in a variety of applications, large and small. It's great for male-female joints. Just coat the male tubing with a thin layer of paste, insert, and bring to metals to the working temperature, and you will have a stronger joint than a brazing rod as the rod only solders the end of the tubes.
We are using the Bernzomatic BZ8250HT Propane/Mapp Gas Torch with an adjustable flame. The hose makes it easier to use for soldering and light brazing. The torch can be found at muggyweld.com while supplies last. You can also find them at most hardware stores. Let the project cool naturally for maximum strength. This is an easy way to join stainless to stainless or a variety of other metals. It also works on copper, brass, steel, cast iron, bronze, Damascus steel, and more. It's rated at over 80,000 PSI and operates at 1050°F. If you think you may need more strength for your application, just add more SSQ-6 silver paste.
We got the thin stainless a little too hot. It doesn't hurt anything, but we do not want to warp the thin stainless. As soon as you see the metals turn even slightly red, you are done. When the solder is sandwiched between metals and the view of the paste is obstructed, you can't see if it has wetted the metals.
In the second half of the video, we have a review of the SSQ-6. Scott Juarez emailed muggyweld.com photos of his Han Solo DL-44 Blaster replicas using the SSQ- paste. Scott builds a variety of popular props in this field. The SSQ-6 is popular with gunsmiths across North America. If you want to hide the silver solder, there is no easier way to use SSQ-6 paste. On thicker metals or a larger mass, oxyacetylene or oxygen Mapp gas will get the parts to the working temp faster, which is essential when using the SSQ-6. If it takes too long to achieve the 1050°F, the flux and metal particles that make up the paste can separate.
The SSQ-6 typically has a shelf life of six months, a little more when refrigerated. Don't forget to subscribe to our channel for more muggyweld.com videos, and be sure to tell your friends and coworkers to Muggy Weld It
