The Hifiman R9 is an interesting headphone: a closed back dynamic from a company that typically makes open back planar headphones… Not sure they really did a great job with it. Luckily, there are people like JM Audio out there who can take something that is objectively pretty mediocre and elevate it to something that is quite enjoyable and competitive.

I wonder why nobody is reviewing the JM Editions XTC open and closed headphones. I feel like they are the most important in his lineup. I have the XTC Closed back and completely blown away by the sound quality. Just hoping someone will compare to other high end headphones.

@MrAyrit u just received the verite open and Atrium open yesterday and had my hopes set really high for them. The XTC Closed beats both in clarity, separation, and tighter bass. The ZMFs sound muffled and almost too much dampening going on in the cups.

I’d say the Elegia would undoubtedly have better resolution and detail. It’s probably the better headphone overall, but as I said in my review of the Elegia, I feel like sometimes I really enjoy it, and sometimes it doesn’t sound quite right. I found the JM R9 fairly consistent and enjoyable.

I tell ya, I've been thinking about this, and I don't even know if I can answer. Do you mean my favorite headphone for under $1000? Value considered? Best overall? Too much pressure to just say best without any other context--couldn't decide.

@@MrAyrit I thought it would be the sv023 but I tried it for a while in a shop and it had an intimate soundstage. The Edition Xs I think lacks dynamics, treble and has an unrefined soundstage. Yes, by better I mean complete. Good bass, presence of its lows, present mids and not penetrating but present highs. Clean sound, wide scene and precise image. Not too high energy requirements for more versatility with different devices. The truth is... I think I'll switch to iems.

I prefer the JM R9 to the Elegia. If you watched my review of the Elegia, my main issue with it is the FR is just a little odd. Sometimes it sounds great, sometimes it's off. I had a hard time consistently enjoying it. R9 is more exciting and consistent. Bigger bass as well. (the JM modded, I wouldn't even consider the stock R9)

I'd say it probably has less dynamics that the Elegia, but I prefer the JM R9.

it struck me as an ad video more than anything. I mean the stock is 0 in sound quality and by paying it turns out to be a 10 with no flows what so ever.
