I love seeing you building it up. My issue is often that I go in too fast with the darker tones. And then the lighter and darker tones get disconnected from each other and it just looks messy. But it’s better to gradually go further and leave the juiciest darks to last. :)

11:59 "By Contrast..." I see what you did there! When I attempt to add contrast, I tend to darken everything equally which of course doesn't increase the contrast... :-( I need practice only darkening the darker areas I guess. Thanks for your wonderful teachings and inspiration!

Thanks Mark. I'd enjoy watching you paint a large watercolour landscape. I find it relaxing to watch you paint in watercolour and gouache. I know your specialty is manga, but I enjoy these kinds of western traditional art videos. I hope you're enjoying autumn in Michigan. The colours must be beautiful.

I used to render like the first skull, but if you use heavier shade and an eraser on the light edges, you get a lot better result 👍

I tend to be somewhere between 2 and 3 when I go with Pencils. Skull 1 reminds me of some stone carving somehow. Something you would expect to see done of ancient Greeks or Romans. Sandstone or Marble and finished by polishing to get that smooth look. @markcrilley: You said in the Video Skull 2 and 3 are printed out - did you use an ink cartridge or a laser printer?

Low contrast drawings with careful use of line weight and a few strategic darks can be quite lovely, especially if the tone of the paper is allowed to do most of the work. In the low-contrast skull, lighten and lose some outline information at the top and left while enhancing slightly the line of the chin at the ball. Also, give a little light shading of the edges in most places, about 1/16" of an inch, very light and subtle. That should help the sense of depth and make it less flat. Then add a little bit more dark at the top of the nasal opening and behind the molars. Punch it slightly. Finally, try almost imperceptible toning of the background at the edges in a few places -- just a little -- then see what you've got. I think you'll like it.

Hey Marc, long time subscriber but it's been a while since i've been to your site. I have given out your name many times on QUORA for so many people wanting to learn how to draw anemine or manga drawings. If you haven't ever been to that site you really should check it out. There are so many people on that site looking for someone like you to show them how to draw like what you teach that you wouldn't believe it. I have only been drawing and painting for around 3 years now but for some reason I would only last about 2 months on whichever type of art that I discovered before I would see something new or different that I wanted to try. Okay long story short I thought I would ask you to teach me how to draw a mallard duck. Not to sound to pushy but I am going to learn to draw a duck swimming a duck landing and a one or 2 taking off. I just thought it never hurts to ask right, I saw a guy's work one time and I couldn't believe they were paintings. I told him he was lying and that they were pictures. He assured me that he painted them and that he does it every year trYING to be the artist that was picked to be on that years duck stamp.ANYWAY
