High expectations // Evergoods CPL24 BACKPACK REVIEW

There is a lot of hype and expectations for this bag online, and when you have two former designers of goruck and Patagonia then the bar has been set pretty high. Can they meet or even exceed expectations?

HOW I REVIEW:
As you might know from my „How I make a buying decision“ video: Rather than just looking at the pros, I like to evaluate the cons or flaws of an item and then evaluate if I can live with them. That is why in my video reviews I concentrate more on the cons of an item rather than going over all the features. Therefore everything shown is just a fraction of all the points that go into the verdict and score of an item.
DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A QUICKLOOK AND A REVIEW:
A Quicklook usually covers pre-production units or items that I only used for a short period of time. While Reviews cover final items that I have reviewed intensively.
AFFILIATE LINKS:

Hey Bo, super Review, danke erstmal! Mach weiter so Bo!

Moin Kevin.

Nice review especially because there are a lot of outdoor shots with the pack on your back. As for the idea of access only being on the left shoulder wear, you're not considering one thing. Although most right handed people actually wear the bag on their right side, in this case if you are right handed and are at an airport, counter, or just need quick access to that pocket, the pocket configuration is set up for the majority of the right handed population. You swing the bag over and use your dominant right hand to do most chores. And as a righty you will get used to this and find it very cool that it's that way. Evergoods are smart folks, they got it right.

Checked this review and bought the grey version. One of the things I dislike about it is the zipper ties. Will be changing it to GoRuck style paracord ties with 1/4" shrink tubing and see if it gives a better feel on opening the bag. For the color, I wish it was a darker grey than a light grey. It get's dirty easily. I'm hoping the company will grow enough that they can offer a variety of colors. Would loooooove to get a dark olive one! I wish they added collapsable side pockets for nalgene size and included a strap that clips on both ends (the small loops beside the carry-on handle) of the bag so you can use it as a sling pack. In summary, I do like the bag. It has easy access and ergonomics that make it a near perfect EDC. You can also fit a flashlight on the hydration tubing of the strap making it perfect for night urban exploration and if you hate headlamps ruining your hairstyle :p To answer the side pocket orientation query: I can easily adapt to the habit of picking up with my left hand to equip the bag and release with my right arm to access the side pocket. I do not one-shoulder carry as I think it will hasten the wear and tear of the strap bearing all the weight.
@Youknowthebo
@Youknowthebo 5 лет назад
Hey Michael! Thanks for the comment and for watching! Changing the zipper pulls is a good idea (I made a "how to customize your zipper pulls" video by the way). I also wish there are some more colors available. Hopefully in the future.

I am right handed, however I always pick my backpacks with the left hand. Simple reason: I need to insert first the arm that has the watch bump, so that after it's tight the second arm can insert smoothly. Same goes backwards: I need to remove first the arm with no watch. I think that's why many backpacks seem designed for left-handed people. Most people wear their watches in their left wrist. You don't want to have it in the way.

Hey Bo - I discovered your channel when I was researching my next office backpack. I was pretty set on the AER Fitpack 2 (after watching many other bag reviews from your channel and Chase Reeves) but after watching your review of the Evergoods CPL24 I decided to put an order through. I really enjoy how you show the bag in the real world, how you pack/use the bag and showcasing the cons of the bags. I really appreciate your unbiased points of view (as unbiased as you can make them). Continue the great work and look forward to watching future videos! By the way, I'm right handed and I pick up my bag with either my right or left hand but I generally put the bag on my left shoulder.

Like the new video look. Keep it up. Nice to see Hamburg in winter. I am right handed and sling the bag over my right shoulder. My EDC is the Mission Workshop Rambler and their quick access pocket is positioned to be easily opened for right handed people-90% of the population. Maybe the designers are lefties and wanted something for them? LOL.
@Youknowthebo
@Youknowthebo 6 лет назад
Thank you very much. I guess there must be some reasoning for most bags being designed that way. I assume it is to keep the right hand free to grab the stuff while the bag hangs from your left shoulder. I assume.

@@YouknowtheboI asked Evergoods if they would sell an alternate version of the bag. The answer was : "We do not have another version in the works. But here is our thoughts Kevin and I are both right handed. In fact Kevin, prior to working for Patagonia, had been a bike messenger in Chicago. We wanted our bags to be right handed with a focus on actually accessing the contents with your right hand. Many bag brands say right handed and all they mean is that the bag is right shoulder dominant. Our openings allow the bag to swing from left shoulder thereby allowing space between your dominant hand and the bag. This makes it very easy to access the bag with that right hand. So we prioritized how you get into the bag over what shoulder you carry it from." I bought the bag shortly after...

Nice video. Appreciate your thorough and honest review. One thing I would like to call out, not of the product review but the video picture itself...your color grading is quite dark. Given that you’re reviewing a dark item, the high contrast look is muddying the details, for example being able to see the texture of the fabrics of the bag. Other than that, nice job.

Thanks for your honest opinion and review. I'm looking into getting a grey version thinking to hide the white dust easier. Haha. I am right-handed. I uses my right hand to carry the top handle and puts on my left shoulder before my right arm puts on the right side. Perhaps I'm the odd one out as when I carry on one shoulder, it would be on my left though I'm right-handed. And because I fractured my right arm when I was young, I learned to use my left hand more often and it became part of my life.

This review is great. And the focus on details is very helpful. On the question of "handedness," I wonder if the design choice comes to a matter of what you prioritize. If the designers assumed you'd reach into the side-open pocket with your dominant (90% right) hand and prioritized dominant "reach" hand instead of dominant "hang" shoulder, then the design actually makes a ton of sense. If you hang it from your right shoulder, then you're always reaching into it with your left hand. So .. I don't think evaluating the choice should depend solely on which shoulder you want to hang from. Hope that's helpful in helping people look holistically at that design choice in making their decisions on this bag.
@Youknowthebo
@Youknowthebo 6 лет назад
Thanks, Eric. You are totally right. I also assume it comes down to the priorities of what the dominant hand is supposed to do. And most designers assume that you need your dominant hand to take out the stuff and let the bag hang of your non dominant shoulder.
@evergoods_
@evergoods_ 6 лет назад
Eric - Jack from EVERGOODS here. You are totally right on. My partner Kevin spent years working as a bike messenger in Chicago and we used that experience to drive that to access(while wearing, also dropping from two strap usage) the bag with your dominant hand would be best. Also, having the bag on non-dominant shoulder creates a space between the dominant hand and the bag you are accessing thus making it easier to use said dominant hand. Bo thanks for getting this dialogue going sir.
@ericniu6398

Ah, so I’m not crazy. I do agree w Bo’s points on padding the laptop compartment (for both vertical and horizontal orientation), internal org of the front pocket (maybe interior zip pockets or elastic straps?) and comfort of grab handles. Also .. I have a GR1 and appreciate how the interior has Molle at the top so you can affix a small pouch to distribute items more .. wondering how y’all thought about that use case? Anyways, bag looks great .. with above updates, I’d likely buy v2
@evergoods_
@evergoods_ 6 лет назад
Eric - The LT compartment has padding on bottom(two layers of foam) as well as around the perimeter of the compartment. The zipper side is not padded but I doubt you would put it down on the zipper side as that is the side you access it from. We felt like the 3D pockets on the inside of the CPL(internal pockets have their own dedicated volume) that you could pack the bag really well without the aded use of Molle. The handles are quite good in our opinion. We went for a sturdy feel, there is quite a lot of build in them. With the aluminum stay (found inside the main pack) the bag carries by handle really nicely when full. No bagging out or sagging of the pack when in side carry mode. I have carried this all over the world by side handle and it has been really great. Easy to grab quickly and move around or take a breather from backpack carry. Thanks for you thoughts!

so close to perfect... a tip I figured out: if you go to hardware stores (at least in the U.S), they have foam tubes used to insulate water pipes. They're thin, light, soft and make great cushions for laptop compartments. As for one arm carries, right side on lift and one arm carry. Great video!

I always always always carry my bag on both shoulders, but I pick it up with my right hand and put it on my right shoulder *first*. (I am right handed.) That said, I've been carrying a Tom Bihn Synapse 19 for...around 8 years of heavy, daily use. As you probably know, that bag has a quick access pocket on each side, so I've gotten used to swinging the bag to one shoulder when I want my keys or a pen, and to the other shoulder when I want my phone or my wallet. The only issue there is that I sometimes forget which side has which stuff, but that's my own issue, LOL.

Just ordered this bag, super hyped to get it. Thanks for the review! Your suggestions for improvement gave me a couple of workaround ideas. For the front quick access compartment, I might get a Tom Bihn organizer. And regarding the laptop compartment, a neoprene sleeve should do the trick. Right shoulder most of the time. It makes me think if I need to change my orientation for the bag. Bo Ismono well I don't edit on premier or final cut or anything but it does great work. I mainly use it for my classes and run the programs they give us and I use the tablet portion for drawing my economics graphs. My only complaint is that it is very heavy. It's built like a tank and has a very nice design but you'll definitely feel the weight. But it's the only laptop I've liked. The surface laptop (not the book) is too frail and the bottom is portion is like a plastic fabric mixture. The surface pro is compelling because it's essentially a lighter more portable tablet of the surface book but it's, like I said, a tablet. If I had to choose a tablet it'd be that but for a laptop I like surface book. The typing experience is amazing. You'll notice that right away that pressing keys feel great compared to the new MacBook ones. I personally am not heavily invested in the apple eco system, I have no apple watch, iPhone or Air Pods. I just have an old iPad air. I also think windows OS is designed better and is easier on the eyes. Mac OS definitely looks cooler but it's not as elegant and kind of distracts with the contrasting bright colors especially at night. I like the 3 finger tap for control center (quick Bluetooth, wifi, projector, brightness, toggles). I like all the track pad gestures. But the surface lime would be the only windows laptops I would recommend.

Hi Bo! Thanks for your review! I'm loving the bag, and definitely resonate with the "piles dirt easily" comment, but it seems like it also comes off easily. I like the big front pocket because it fits an iPad pro perfectly - I find that convenient. Also where do you buy your patches?

Bo, great review! I was waiting for this review on your channel. CPL24 looks good to me, great ergonomics I believe. But my main concern is about fabric, it becomes dirty so fast as I see. I hope EVERGOODS will think about changing it to something different with less magnetic effect (dust, fur, etc.) OR will provide one more color (light green, sand, etc.)

Awesome review! Really like the new format! I cried a little when you mentioned that the bottom of the laptop compartment is not padded =( the bag seems great in so many ways, but this is a pretty big oversight. Sadly I've seen this on the laptop compartments from bags from a few well known companies and it always surprises me that this isn't one of the first things that's considered when designing a laptop compartment haha
@Youknowthebo
@Youknowthebo 6 лет назад
Thank you very much, mate. There is always some tradeofs unfortunately. I guess the huge benefit of the compartment is, that it can fit many laptop sizes. Usually designers only make them for the macbook pro.

Your review pays great attention to details - it's awesome for people who are looking to get this bag! As for your final question, I do face the same problem, I sometimes wonder if those bag designers are left-handers. Haha P.S: the outdoor shots is a refreshing change of style. Awesome filming and audio quality as usual. Keep it up man!

Nice change Bo!!! And still you, cool!!! BTW I'm right handed too but I usually use the bag on my left shoulder so I have my right arm free. Try it...maybe you like it too... :P I also have a one shoulder mini bag that's designed to use on your right shoulder that I love, it's a GO CAPRISA an Italian brand. And of course after watching you videos I became more aware of the details and more interested in organization and bags...I already have two backpacks (different sizes), one messenger bag and now the shoulder bag...:P

Enjoyed the video. As for picking the bag up, left or right, I pick up right. But I always wear over both shoulders and will just need to remember where to hang it when trying to access the pocket. Not a huge deal for me. What is a huge deal is the lack of a bottle holder on the outside. With all the tech we (I) carry on a daily basis you can’t risk getting anything wet. I feel like this bag was designed by the guy from GoRuck with no input from the Patagonia guy. I compare it to when a new cell phone comes out and they see if it’s an “iPhone killer”. This bag is trying to be a GoRuck killer, though not for those who use GoRuck for rucking. For the price, I’d get this bag over GoRuck as the MOLLE does not sway me either way. Oh, and no padding/suspension for laptop?! Deal breaker. Appreciate the review as I saw this bag on Huckberry.com and they have it 10% off. I would have been disappointed ordering it and finding out the laptop is minimally protected.
@Youknowthebo
@Youknowthebo 6 лет назад
THanks, Kevin. I get what you're saying. And that's the beauty of it TBH: Everyone has different needs. I actually like that there is no bottle holder on the outside. I never use them because when I need to catch a train for instance and I am running the bottle always flys out of the outer bottle compartment. haha As for the laptopcompartment: It does sound like a deal breaker, but after having thought about it I personally came to the conclusion that it is a tradeof that I am willing to take. many padded laptop compartments are more or less designed to "only" fit the macbook pro 15". This on the other hand can fit lots of different sized laptops, but then again isn't well padded. So adding something soft to the bottom of the compartment is actually ok for me. especially if I might want to switch to a surface book for instance which is way thicker than the macbook and would never fit into the Goruck's laptop compartment for instance. But again: I totally see where you are coming from. PS: Riding season is about to start again in Hamburg ;-) Gonna get me an Akrapovic exhaust I think. Or the SC Project. Not sure yet

Kevin - Jack from EVERGOODS here. We envisioned CPL to be super low profile, not snagging on things when in tight quarters ie a crowded subway, when being put underneath an airline seat, or even when off the beaten path. Additionally we really wanted folks to take advantage of using the bag on its side. We felt a bottle pocket would get in the way of the above objectives. As far as our design approach we know there is not a perfect solution for everyone BUT our job is to know why we are doing what we do with clarity and then build towards that. Regarding the LT compartment there are two layers of foam in the bottom. It is not suspended ie the foam is in the bottom panels of the compartment itself. Thank you for the great discussion!
@kevinankin
@kevinankin 6 лет назад
Hi Jack. I would never have expected you to reach out to me as you did. Thanks for that. I fly a lot for work and bring a water bottle with me which I fill up at the airport. I have trust issues putting them in any compartment, rather than a dedicated pocket on the outside. That's on me, and I know that. The lack of the compartment doesn't take away from the quality of the bag you produced, nor it's over all aesthetic. It's a great looking bag. Thanks for the additional info on the laptop compartment.

Excellent review. I’ve been waiting for it. Nice bag. I think I would prefer my GR0, though. I always pick up my bag with my right hand and sling it over my right shoulder. When taking it off, I usually loosen the left shoulder strap first, then slide the bag off of my right shoulder. I would prefer the laptop compartment on that side.

Thanks, Tommy. If you already own a highquality bag (especially the Goruck) then I would always recommend to safe money instead of buying a new one. But if you were to choose between the GR1 and this one as your first bag, than the choice would be way harder I think

If the vertical zippers were on the opposite side, I would instantly buy. Love the minimalistic design. Maybe 1 bottle side pocket would be nice. I wonder why companies don't make such style of bag for 2 different handed people. I've come across this problem on many bags I like.

Great video ! I appreciate the new format. To answer your question, I'm right handed but I carry bags over my left shoulder. For an urban usage with EDC kinda like yours (laptop, bottle, lunch bag), would you recommend the Evergoods or the Invisible Backpack you mentionned in this video and reviewed in the past ? Thanks again !
@Youknowthebo

That's a very good question. If you need lots of organizational compartments then I would say: go with the invisible backpack two. If you need clamshell opening and more comfortable carrying (although the invisible backpack is also very comfortable) then go with the cpl24

Like your new style 👍 just a thought would a protective product like scotchgard help with the dirt and pet hairs from sticking. LOL I also use a tissue pack when I put my MacBook Air in my Dakine packsack. I'm left handed but grab my backpacks right handed and put them on the right shoulder, probably because cameras are right handed and a lot of my camera backpacks have had access compartments that are made so you sling the bag to your left side and access your camera from the right side access door, Lowepro BP 250 is an example, some Manfrotto bags are set up this way. My Think Tank Photo Airport Essentials is one where I have to set the bag down and open the main compartment to get access to my gear. This bag is made for transport and security so that is not an issue, I actually prefer it now since I ride motorcycles as my main mode of transportation. Whoever would of thought having bags could get so technical LOL Getting late here in California. Gute Nacht

Great review! Love the new “real world” review style. Really interested in this pack, but am torn between this and the GR1 21L. If not full, would you say the depth of the CPL24 vs the GR1 is noticeable? CPL24 is listed as 8inches deep, the GR1 is listed as 5.5 inches. Is that noticeable in real world use? If the pack is not full? Thanks.

I had a question about is backpack. Is it made of a flexible material? Sometimes I have to cram my backpack into a cabinet or locker at work and a lot of new backpacks, that have a space for laptops, don't necessarily lend themselves to being squished. I'm looking for a backpack for myself, who is not even 5 feet tall and it's really only going to hold a lunch bag, water bottle, and three small pouches of necessities.I liked this video and will definitely be checking out your others.
