In this action-packed episode, the MythBusters test the limits of super adhesive by attempting to lift a car with just seven drops and investigate if it can act as a substitute for a seatbelt in a crash. They also debunk myths about driving in high heels, wedges, and snow boots, and compare the effects of driving drunk to driving with a full bladder. Witness as they turn a room upside down using only super adhesive and challenge the conventional wisdom of footwear and driving safety.

For the driving in shoes test - try wearing high boots that give you little or no ankle movement. I'm a double amputee, no lower legs, and I can only drive a car with hand controls. This is entirely due to the lack of ankle joints on my prosthetic legs. If I had ankles, I could still easily drive.

That footwear test would've been even more interesting had they used a manual. Having to work three pedals and having to use both your feet while doing so would probably be even more awkward in certain shoes than driving an automatic. That said: While flip-flops are indeed terrible for driving, at least there's an easy fix: I always just take them off before I even start the engine and then I simply drive barefoot.
@MrMarinus18
@MrMarinus18 3 месяца назад
But also going full break or full throttle with weird shoes is not that hard as you can put your weight on the ball of your foot and all shoes have a nice large surface there. However when you only have it half-way you put more pressure on the back of your foot where shoes can get weird.
@Milnoc

Having a car with a manual transmission, I was thinking the same thing. I've tried to drive with winter/work boots, and it was very easy to press two pedals at the same time. NOT good at all!
@SuiLagadema
@SuiLagadema 3 месяца назад
I'm not so sure. Usually your clutch foot is reserved for it (at least how I drive) and, as all manual drivers can confirm, it becomes automatic. I don't know how to do a 180° because I'm mostly a city driver, but my guess is the coordination with uncomfortable shoes (for the person) could screw the fine motor skills for them. I've seen people driving with all kinds of footwear. I drive with military-style boots because I'm just comfy in them, and other people ask me how the hell am I comfortable driving with them.

Keep in mind they have pure cyanoacrylate which was much more pure ages ago that it is now so if you buy them in dollar store certainly they are not hardering that fast and are also not that strong.
@leoarc1061

@@motherpigeon1582 Yes, many modern versions of what we call "superglue" have a different ratio of ingredients or different ingredients altogether. Some are less viscous and harden in 10 or less seconds (like the old stuff), others are a lot more viscous (supposedly to increase the surface area in order to make up for the fact that the adhesive substance itself is of a lower in percentage or a different, cheaper substance was used in its place.)

@SirZaydenOfNapier10 3 месяца назад
Cyanoacrylate is the name of the chemical compound. Superglue is in fact a trademarked term, & that's why they mainly call it "super adhesive" or just "glue". I think Grant calls it "Superglue" at one point, but I think that one just slipped by the editors. Hope that helps.
@MrMarinus18
@MrMarinus18 3 месяца назад
They aren't allowed to use trademarked names. Which really became awkward in the bubble boy myth since bubblewrap is trademarked so they had to say "bubble packaging". Apparantly it was an editing nightmare with every other scene having to be retaken.

@MrMarinus18

Indeed. A seatbelt has stretch both in the belt itself and in the mechanism to help slow your deceleration. The glue has no give whatsoever so you will be experiencing the exact same G forces as the car.
@DrBarbequeSauce
@DrBarbequeSauce 3 месяца назад
@@MrMarinus18 Exactly, the crash doesn't kill you, the sudden stop and G-forces do, that's why seatbelts & airbags stop you gradually
@topaz123212
@topaz123212 2 месяца назад
@DrBarbequeSauce seatbelts and airbags do not stop you gradually, the seat belts hit a safety lock, and the airbags deploy at a rate of something like 200mph for a foot or so then will slowly deflate when something hits it a.k.a your face lol
@MrMarinus18
@MrMarinus18 2 месяца назад
@@topaz123212 If you pull really hard on the safety lock you can feel it has give, the material of the belt itself also has give. With a airbag it has 2 large holes in it and it's filled with gas so it also has give. An airbag doesn't slowly deflate, it deflates extremely fast. If you see an airbag go off in real time you don't see it inflate and deflate at all, it happens far too fast. A seatbelt is not made of rubber but it does have a few millimeters of give and that does make a huge difference.

That's my point. They should've done the tests with people who have been used to high hell shoes for years. If we give those same shoes to a man or woman who have never used them before, the results will show that. Do you feel more confident driving with high heels or do you feel more confident with a different style of footwear?
@haydendegrow945
@haydendegrow945 3 месяца назад
I'd hate to say this about my TV idols, but Adam and Jaime got the shoes myth all wrong. The thing is, they always knew what was coming, always knew that there was going to be a problem and they compensated for it. In the real world, people DON'T know what's coming, and don't realize their shoes are a problem until it's too late. Honestly, I think the boys created too sterile an environment to test in. They should have taken a leaf out of Canada's Worst Driver's playbook and made a course that had them encounter obstacles that were unexpected and sudden. THAT would have replicated the scenarios better, and their outcome might have been different

Regarding the footwear, it doesn't make much sense to test people who are not used to a particular style of footwear. Men tend to use high heels a lot less often or not at all, therefore the results are invalid. Testing the experiment on women who are used to both flat and high heel shoes gives us a more dependable result. I'm willing to bet that most women who have driven with high heel shoes every day for the last 20 years are, on average, faster in high heels than while using boots or even training shoe, for instance.
