❤ the breakdown of the poach but with 2 righties I think the left side player would have taken that 3rd shot. Having a leftie created this particular situation. Totally agree that you have to totally commit to the poach. You leave a lot of court open if your poach isn't successful.

@BrionesPickleball question: Instead of resetting the balls, why wasn't Pesa aggressive on those balls? The balls seem to be between yellow and green zones. I ask because I just played a 4.0 tourney, and most of them were using aggressive volley from the transition zone.
@youngsuit
@youngsuit Год назад
5:00 - this is big. if you want to get better too, you need to be able to not get discouraged when you miss the poach or lose the point because of poor execution. this then makes you tentative and lose out
@BrionesPickleball
@BrionesPickleball Год назад
👍🏻👍🏻
@jassmone2009
@jassmone2009 Год назад
The first point...who should take it seems obvious but not mentioned...Caden has to back away from the ball whereas Pesa has to step into the ball to hit. Which player would be in a better to position to hit any shot, not just a drive? The one stepping in and not backing up. It seems to me that the better players would just pick up on this movement naturally and so it would be obvious to them almost as soon as the ball leaves the opponent's paddle on the other side of the net. I also like the idea that if the decision is a "tie" then the player who can take it earlier should to put more pressure on the opponents (by taking away time).
@BrionesPickleball
@BrionesPickleball Год назад
It’s always situational. The first point Pesa is hitting off the back foot and not stepping in. Lol

For preventing the shake and bake, would hitting a deep return to the server or the server's partner be better (this is for rec play)?
@BrionesPickleball
@BrionesPickleball Год назад
No matter who you return to, the other player can technically poach on the 5th shot. The key is to practice your 4th shot (volley), and keep it low and/or away from the middle of the court.

P. hit the drive on his backfoot then stepped BACKward to about 6' behind the baseline -- had the poach not been a winner, acres of open court to block into behind Cayden. Looks like a bad decision 3rd with a lucky outcome due to Cayden's athleticism & anticipation.
@BrionesPickleball
@BrionesPickleball Год назад
Definitely not lucky. 1. Pesa was looking for a shorter return to step in and drive. 2. Return was fairly deep, so he had to adjust. 3. Drive target is key, as you can see it was towards Craig’s dominant side. 4. Caden made a good read and good poach. 5. If Craig happened to hit a better punch volley, Caden may have let it go, and Pesa would have just hit a 5th shot drop. And then they would have got to the kitchen line. 6. Every situation is different, sometimes you may lean back on a drive, make the wrong read, or miss the ball completely. The pros practice over and over again, and they may miss or make a wrong read sometimes. All in all, this was a great play, and is a good example of what a poach can look like. Again, every single situation is different, and good players adjust during the play, and will adjust strategy and positioning on the next play.

This play is wrong! You never see Collin Johns running to the net to shake and bake. So many times people smack that drive back behind the poacher. If you want to be 5.0 play like this. You want to be top pro, slow down coming to the net.

@RalphL12332

@RalphL12332
@RalphL12332 Год назад
@@BrionesPickleball any drive that gets drove at me I’ll smack it back, whether it’s to my BH FH or body. I suppose it depends who u r playing. But you’ll never try to shake and bake Collin as a strategy to win. So if it can’t beat the best, then why try and learn it?
@BrionesPickleball
@BrionesPickleball Год назад
Have you seen Ben play mixed doubles? Lol. To say that he never shakes and bakes, is ignorant. Also, it doesn’t have to look EXACTLY like this. This is just an example. Lastly, when he plays with his brother, they usually don’t have to ever do this. Why? Because they can beat everyone from the kitchen line. Watch more mixed and mens pro doubles, and you’ll see more poaches. As the game evolves, we’ll see more and more.
@BrionesPickleball
@BrionesPickleball Год назад
Also, mixing in plays like this may be the only way to beat the Johns.
