High Marham Power Station. Last day of generation 28/03/2003. This video contains the de-synchronisation of Unit 2, the final operational unit.
The station closed in 2003 after nearly 45 years in operation, with a loss of 119 jobs.
High Marnham was the most southerly of three power stations which lined the River Trent, known locally as Megawatt Valley, the others being West Burton and Cottam. The station was constructed by the CEGB Northern Project Group, overseen by resident engineer Douglas Derbyshire and the main contractor Alfred McAlpine. The power station was constructed on a "green field site", started in November 1955 and fully commissioned by 1962. With a total generating capacity of 1000 MW [946 MW net], it was the first 1000 MW power station built and commissioned in Europe, to operate at higher boiler operational temperature / pressure limits than ever previously commissioned.

It was an interesting station with each unit control room directly under the high level de-airator. Which on one unit split preventing operator Dack from leaving before shutting down the unit. Regards Terry Johnson in New Zealand Zealand ex Cottam operator

Very sad to see yet another part of the UK's self-sufficiency being sacrificed.

All 6 of my former stations now decommissioned. Always sad to see years of service come to an end.

High Marnham sent its electricity via overhead lines to the Chesterfield substation close to where I live. The lines were renewed and downgraded after the station closed and are now due to be re-upgraded to handle the electricity from the offshore wind farms off the east coast. Madness in my opinion to close all of the coal fired power stations and loose our own secure power supply, the last one Ratcliffe to close later this year 2024.

Cottam shuts down in September leaving West Burton the last operating power station on The Trent.

West Burton A is now the last operating Coal fired Station on the 'Trent'.

@@konradblades93 Till at least 2021. I think it will eventually go biomass or entirely gas fired.

I remember as an apprentice with English Electric Co in the mid fifties reading about High Marnham in the works quarterly magazine. It stated that with the five 200. MW machines giving a total of 1000 MW it was the first station in the country to have such an output. Later with Eggborough P. S. E. E. Co installed four 500 MW machines in the sixties with two more at Ironbridge. Now nearly all these big units are just history. - sad but inevitable !

@@kennethstill5945 I wonder what happens to the units when power station's are decommissioned. Sold on? scrapped?. The only thing left at High Marnham is the substation. That will probably get took down at some point.

And 19 years on, there's still an empty space there, in a country that is facing it's biggest ever (self-inflicted) energy crisis.

A flip of a swiitch and there ends years of service. Sort of sad.

at least it was resurrected, in India. they don't close them for the environment, it's to leave a good impression on the gullible people who are thinking of the environment. if they did care about the environment they wouldn't sell it all off to India where it can run unrestricted by regulations. the same will no doubt happen to all the others. so there'll be just as many coal stations just they'll be running far less efficiently as they don't have to keep everyone happy. and how much energy is used in decommissioning, transportation and recommissioning everything? there is more to going green than people like to think, in the long run coal isn't as bad as it looks. we need a viable, reliable, practical alternative first and we haven't got one yet.
