Awesome video! very clear and well narrated. I have a 2009 and after the :"Dieselgate" mod that was done by the local dealer, my mpg has been dropping like a rock, the DPF light & and check engine light have illuminated, and now the fan runs for about 12 minutes after you shut the car off. Man, I have to do something and I have been told to do a DPF and EGR delete and that will get my mileage back up into the 50's. What ia your opinion of that idea? ( Plus cleaning the intake manifold) I love your channel and have subscribed so keep the great content coming.
I do appreciate your kind words. Thank you Sir. Yeah the new ones are smothered with all the pollution restriction crap. Those cars in Europe get great mileage without all the added junk. My personal opinion, if the state you live in does care about check engine light as far as inspection, DPF and EGR delete is a must. Your Mpg will blow your mind afterwards.
But unfortunately after doing those your car will have a check engine light on. But there is another way around that, there are companies that can flash your computer to run with those mods without the check engine light. 🤷🏼♂️ I hope this helps.
If you have a check engine light you may be running in Limp Mode that puts the care in safe operation mode that is very inefficient. Get the CEL off and your mileage should improve. I just had an issue much like that but it was the flapper valve. Lost 25% on mileage until it was fixed. Motor operated fine but terrible MPG.
I drive a Jetta 1.9 TDI AHF motor on 406,000 Kms. I reside in South Africa Do oil and filter change every 10K Kms . I use Prolong diesel 15/40 engine oil. No clogged Egr or intake manifold. Still original turbo . 5.3/ 100 ltrs. No sludge buildup. Original exhaust Original cv's Jetta still runs well.
Engine load makes the biggest difference in how much it gets clogged up. I had it clogged up like 5 times less, just a quarter inch thick. It really depends how a person drives the car. Low RPM (1300-1600) driving makes it clog up very fast. I drove my car always around 2000 RPM and up and it pays. Gotta say it had 250k km when I cleaned it. Another thing that clogs it up is oil leak from turbo or crankcase valve, which makes the oil sucked through the intake and it makes these nasty big chunks.
Great video bro 👍 My little daily I’ve owned for 17 years, a Mk4 2003 TDi , 90bhp, @ 200,000 miles, built like a Tiger Tank, same clutch, only on its 2nd battery, is just the most reliable car I’ve ever owned! Starts with one turn of the key, so much torque and returns 55 mpg regularly and on a long run 65 mpg plus! Only problems ….as the UK roads at the moment have feckin great big potholes EVERY feckin where you drive, is suspension repairs!! The UK, 7th richest country in the world and can’t even manage to repair its own road infrastructure 😠😠😠 What a feckin joke the UK is 😠 Sorry, rant over!
I'm in Chicago and just when you think most potholes are fixed and its not so bad winter causes a bunch of new ones. Same car as you if its a Golf (GLI seat swap, 6sp swap, 1019 injectors etc). Best mod I did to my car was 1.5" lift spacers and biggest oversize tires that could fit. Mpg took a hit and noticeably more roll but trade off was well worth it for me. Still get ~50mpg driving it like I stole it in the city and I can drive over curbs and bomb rough streets like its nothing - I also do go off-road boondock camping.
@@h82fail I’m jelous bro ☹️ I was even considering changing to a Dacia Duster as they’ve plenty of fat rubber on the road to get better pothole improvement 🤔 Can you message your lifter part number and tyre and wheel size combo please and I’ll price it up to c the total cost over here 👍 If it’s a common size I’ll try the scrap yards
Same shit in the USA, and we’re supposed to be the richest country in the world. But when all the money is spent on bums & illegals, guess that’s whatcha get.

@@thedolphinDog No problem, I'm not a fan of any newer engine, whether that be a diesel or gas. They are way to complicated and have way to many things that can go wrong with them. The main reason why the ALH gets such good mileage and runs so efficiently is because of it's simplicity and lack of emissions systems. That's what makes it a good engine and why it out preforms all of the others.
2004 Beetle tdi 484,000 miles averaging 550+ miles per tank. The only time I know for sure the intake manifold was cleaned was around 100,000 miles. The only service other than regular maintenance was spark plug harness replacement and a crank shaft that was showing signs of wear during the 400K timing belt change. New clutch at 325k. My daughter learned how to drive in this car too!
I have a 3.0 TDI and I'm trying to do a tune up and can't seem to find the spark plugs or harness? What other maintenence have you had to do to get 400k any pulleys etc.?
I had the same issue years ago I changed to Amsoil series 3000 never had a clogged issue again. I went 735 once left Denver got to the Iowa Minnesota border one one tank of diesel fuel.
@@VikingsGarage My 2013 Golf tdi returned the same fuel economy (when it was 7 years old in Aug 2017) during a roadtrip from Montreal to Glenn Burnie (close to Washington DC): covered 1183km on one tank of diesel at 60 miles/h.
@@VikingsGarage My 2013 Golf tdi returned the same fuel economy (when it was 4 years old in Aug 2017) during a roadtrip from Montreal to Glenn Burnie (close to Washington DC) through New york and Baltimore: covered 1183km on one tank of diesel at 60 miles/h.
🤘✌️ have the same engine did the same many years from now. Interesting thing was that going from 1.5 centimeters intake to it's full size that is 5cm or something didn't change anything at all. It was running same before cleaning as after...anyway this is must to do thing on tdi's
Wow. I just bought a 2014 tdi jetta, I was excited to see 40mpg.. eventually it'll need DPF, and EGR attention. But I just got the cable from Ross tech, and plugged it into the vcds... my measured and calculated soot values were like 13 grams and 3 grams. But when it finally starts limping, or giving me shit about it, I plan on a full delete, and having a tune done for it. No lights, better power and mpg, no more DPF bs.. lol And hats off to the man with the half million miles on the bug, that's really cool to hear.
I use archoil diesel fuel system cleaner and I've never had any issues with mine. I run it every tank just for good measure. I have a 2017 Ram Ecodiesel and it's been trouble free.
If you have the EGR still connected, you're gonna get this crud. Bin the EGR.. You're also gonna get crap mileage compared to an EGR delete version - go figure.. When I reconnect the EGR for "The Test", my economy goes to hell & I know it's also murdering the engine. They are a rubbish idea, like most "green" theories. "Stop Start" is another similar "Green" disaster - you are doing countless hot stops that bake on varnished oil - and again, it murders the engine..
Delete that egr and run the cab vent hose into a catch can and back into the intake, or run a hose to the very back of the car and plug the intake hole.
5:08 Hahaha every one who owns this car knows that frustrating alarm sound when you go to start it. BTW when you said the EGR doesn't even close my thought was "that's not normal?". I guess I'll be taking a look.
I'm an aircraft mechanic, hardly ever work on cars, but am capable. Is EGR & DPF difficult? Clean or replace? I know my check engine light is due to these. 3 shops so far said replace both (damn expensive) but isn't cleaning more logical? The quotes were ridiculous so I'm hoping to do it myself. 2012 TDI Golf 2.0. 46 MPG & a blast to drive.
I sprayed Oven cleaner in through my egr while in situ, I’m guessing it filled the inlet manifold too It struggled to start then blew an almighty amount of crap out. 2003 beetle 1.9 ATD PD It ran fine with no faults but now it runs better. I did blank my egr but reconnected it after disconnecting it threw up the engine light and my MPG dropped severely (we don’t need that with todays fuel prices) So after the oven cleaner treatment, egr connected again my mpg has gone right up 👍🏼👍🏼 Edit, I blanked the vacuum pipe to the egr not the egr body piece
Add a comment... @markgagner1607 0 seconds ago In the pursuit of higher fuel mileage but more importantly, dependability, I’ve learned that, Rawtek makes a pipe to replace your DPF filter and catalytic converter (Off-road use only Of course) And you need to purchase a Tune-zilla tune kit that eliminates all that electronic gizmos so you’re not dealing with check engine lights. The pipe looks like high-quality and well manufactured but it’s $1100!!!. Bad enough the tune is $750. I’m seriously thinking about gutting my factory exhaust and running that with the tune-Zilla tuning. I’m not a performance junkie, and I’m not even sure it would make a tremendous MPG improvement. My main goal would be to eliminate all that extra emissions crap that keeps giving me problems (and exspensive ones) like plugged cat, plugged DPF, failing O2 Sensors… fortunately, I do live in a place that does not have annual inspections. Any thoughts?
That’s no one drives any more diesel cars. Last 10 years almost every one drives on petrol, CNG, TNG, hybrid or el cars. No problem wit EGR, DPF, or similar common problems which you have with diesel cars. Personality I drive 5 years old Toyota CHR hybrid, and after 120.000 km it’s in mint shape. Petrol fuel consumption it’s 3,9L/100km. Not problem with anything. Last time with my mechanic he check hybrid battery in car, it’s 97% health. 👏🏻
Very wrong statement all across the board. Most of cars in Europe or Middle East are diesel powered. “Hybrid or el cars” not even sure what your implying there, although you seem to contradict yourself in the following statement. Either way, Thank you for watching!!
Just got a 2005 Golf TDI. Everything is so brittle.. I was working in that area on some wiring I found the plastic harness had started wearing into so much so that one of the wires had exposed copper. I broke the nipple on the coolant expansion tank and did not even know it :( As for the EGR and Intake manifold.. I am thinking this may be one of the things I need to do! EDIT: My cars at about 270,000 miles!
I have a stuck 2014 jetta tdi waste gatem intermittent. Now my dpf is getting clogged. So I'm going to take that off and clean it. Have you done a video cleaning up the turbos? Can you do a video showing how to take the turbo out and clean up the wastegate.
I don't understand this practice. Oven cleaner is primarily caustic soda a.k.a. Sodium Hydroxide a.k.a. Lye. Sodium Hydroxide is corrosive to aluminum; it will dissolve it, especially if you use heat. It is the reason machine shops don't hot tank aluminum parts, although it doesn't seem many shops clean that way anymore.
@@VikingsGarage going to look at one this weekend. These cars are amazing creatures and one day, hopefully not too soon, we won’t be able to find them anymore
I have a question first I own a beetle bug and it’s a 1999 TDI Turbo diesal injection and I start it it dies, I can turn it over then dies and my timing belt is new so it’s not that. I would love to see as Preventative For the DPF To stay clean. I just recently had to pay for. A antique metaphad to be replaced because of the flapper, a piece of the broke off. I
I have seat 1999 1.9tdi cordoba, it has a vw motor. Should I use additive. And what additive? It has almost 400000km =250000miles. Is there something to notice. Or just put in the tank?
I did not know that the intake manifolds filled with soot. So this is very useful. Which engine is this? The engine code is on the top of the timing belt cover. This said, I suppose I can find that on the Wikipedia page.
Hi there , I’ve got a vw golf gt tdi and got rough idle and loads of black smoke , no faults reading in diagnostic, what can I do ? And what do you think is the problem? , thx
I have the same engine. I use cetane booster to make the fuel burn more complete. I had to change the timing belt it was so worn it wouldn't turn the engine. I have 241000kms on my 2.8 duramax
@@leadnsteel1428 yeah I have noticed it's a bit peppier with a cetane booster. Might start using it more often. I didn't change my timing belt for the first time until 250,000 kms/ 7years and it was still fine. No cracking and the teeth were in excellent condition. I think the conditions the timing belt gets exposed to are a major factor when considering it's life span. I believe I could have easily done another 100,000kms without any issue and my diesel mechanic agreed.
great vid thanks a lot for sharing , i am having problems with a 2006 jetta tdi , when i am in DRIVE OR REVERSE , the car kicks very bad seams like the car will brake in half LOL , someone in the internet has the same problem different car and this guy suggest change the TPS but i think this cars has the TPS attached to the throttle body !! any toughs or suggestion ?? the car has no check engine light however , i am thinking that maybe the transmission is going bad !! don't know !! thanks a lot a new subscriber !!!
Use the exact same one he did though: "Easy-Off Fume Free", the blue can. That one doesn't contain any lye (NaOH) like the EO Heavy Duty or really any other oven cleaner out there. Lye will eat the aluminum and other parts too. Also, make sure to actually remove the components to clean them. Just spraying it in there could result in: (1) a chunk of carbon going into the cylinder, breaking the engine, (2) oven cleaner getting into the cylinders which has reports of killing these engines.
You dumped all that liquid and cleaner into the driveway which leads to a storm drain? Much better to collect the water and put into the toilet so it will be treated at a sewage treatment plant (assuming you are not on septic).
have you thought of converting your TDI to run on CNG? i just bought a 2015 TDI 45K miles but am not ready to dive into CNG conversion without losing the 4 years warranty on the smog certificate.
My passat has thrown a traction control light up every time I start it. It runs like it wants to die and when accelerating feels like it's a knocking machine but once light is off it runs smooth could egr be apart of my problem?
@@VikingsGarage same story all around the world but every other year, you may put the egra back again? Maybe? Depends on how long you wanna keep the car. What do you think about deleting the egr may give any damage to engine?
I’m pretty sure that actually it won’t cause engine damage , only a little more pollution. I won’t do it, as I’m currently thinking of selling it and getting a crazier project for the channel. 🤔
Hi great video. I've just stripped and cleaned my Golf TDI EGR valve and throttle flap. It was in a terrible state 😮😮 and took hours of scraping and oven gel to clean. I do have a question. Its a 2007 1.9 TDI 105 BXE engine and I cant see if it has a DPF. So do you know if it has one or a Catalytic converter or something else I need to clean. - thank you
From what I was able to find, none of the 1.9s ever had DPF mounted to them. I have the 1.9 BKE and many sources said I have a DPF when i actually don't
@@JohnDoe-ij2zi absolutly right. One wonders what I was going to charged for by taking it for a professional DPF cleaning? Would they have simply charged me and because if my lack of knowledge or come clean? Any way the EGR valve clean fixed most of the issues. But I still failed as the engine refused to come up to full operating temp. A faulty thermostat caused the emissions to exceed the limit. Now all repaired I'm getting great MPG again and the engine runs great too. I put a tank of premium diesel through the engine every third fill up. It certainly runs better over all 😃😃
That’s not a symptom, it’s lack of power/sluggish. No pick up at all. It’s easy to check, just remove the hose to the egr and look in there. Good luck.
Thank you. I have a 2012 Jetta tdi. Has a major league period we checked the O-rings on the hoses. They are okay and replaced. The mechanic is saying it's a leak directly from the turbo exhaust. Can you give some insight on that?
Hello brother i have volvo s40 2008 i changed new catalyseur and turbo but my car dont have power the mechanic tell me is for egr valvula need the changed possible respond me help thanks😢🙏❤
@@VikingsGarage it should provide more air for the engine intead of the exhaust gases and prevent intakes from cloging up like this... Also mine is just ECU disabled it should just open every 50k miles or so... Friend in his older car just metal blocked it and disconnected.. it does wonders just this small thing
Let s not forget to mention that you better don t get caught doing that, in most European countries and the US, this is illegal with some countries having hefty fines for that. Then the engine and even more so the exhaust system does get hotter coz the "positive" side effect of getting more fresh air into the engine inevitably leads to higher temps and the oil gets dirtier much faster. Not worth the downsides in my book.
i change wih a new one this part, they clean inside as they said 30 mts at 80kms in a 4th shifht.. and still the light check engine and the light look like sprin on. and my accelaracion soo poor, i have change the timing bell, whater pump cooler, i really do'nt now what else i can do, do you have any aidea to help?
That’s an awesome question . I’m actually in the process of doing a video showcasing that. But spoiler alert it’s in the 50’s. Thank you for Subscribing, I appreciate that. Video will be up next week.
1st thing to check is your air conditioner drain(know for clogging) 2nd if you have a sunroof, make sure the drains are clean and free of debris. I hope this info was helpful.
@@VikingsGarage no sunroof, I think air condition is okay, where to check for clogging, I think it’s from the cabin air filter bcoz I have seen in some forums it’s a common problem in all VW and Audi .
@@alb.alboz2083 I assume you got the 77kw / 105hp 1.9 tdi...limp mode restricts this very engine to 140kmh and nearly 3000rpm, you can also feel that the gas pedal stiffens. Usually switching the engine off and restarting it resets this limitation. 8l is way too much and could be EGR related but the other issue that often causes limp mode, esp when you drive quite fast or accelerate all of a sudden (or break and then go all out on the throttle) is the turbo, the variable turbine geometry might be worth checking at the same time. Over time, the moving fins clog up due to carbon build up inside and then they don t move freely enough to adjust in time, once the electronics detect that, it ll activate limp mode. Edit: they typical error code for what I just described is P0234 -overboost condition (can be the opposite as well, then you d have a leak somewhere) on the VCDS. Sadly this very error code is very general and the EGR can t be excluded. So given that cleaning the EGR first is much easier, I d do that first. Then you can also have the VTG actuation checked if it moves rather freely coz getting the turbo out to have the VTG checked properly is a much bigger task.
@@VikingsGarage new to diesel but my cjaa went to limp mode, died and wouldn't restart. Vcds showed 3 glow plugs bad and low fuel pressure.
