My high-pitched voice had a huge impact on my life, up until the age of 18, I struggled with a voice that was high-pitched, cracky, and hard to use. This led to a lot of depression and anxiety and severely impacted my sense of self.
In this video, I discuss my voice journey from being bullied at school and the impact my high-pitched voice had on my life, to being finally diagnosed with the voice disorder Puberphonia.
I hope you enjoy the video, and I will see you back here soon for the next video on what Puberphonia is and how to treat a high-pitched voice.

Thank you so much for making this video. I do not have puberphonia exactly, but I have an incredibly similar story, it felt like I was listening to myself! I am a female, but developed a really weak, quiet, high-pitched voice at the age of around 15. People could hardly hear me, and I sounded very high-pitched compared to my normal voice (prior to that age, my voice had been fine). My story is so similar to yours in that others around me thought that that was just how I sounded, but I knew inside that it was not my real voice. I felt trapped in my body and felt like I was living in a nightmare all day. Eventually I told my parents how I felt, and though they didn't quite understand, they supported me in getting help and I too went to an ENT and was diagnosed with muscle tension dysphonia. The ENT believed, as do I, that it was probably brought on by the immense amount of social anxiety I started feeling when I started high school. Unfortunately, I'm 24 now and things have improved a lot, but I still struggle somewhat. My voice is unreliable, sometimes it feels normal and other times it gets strained and high-pitched again. I haven't quite cracked the code of how to get my voice back to normal, but things have definitely improved. I'm excited for your next videos and how you recovered your normal voice :) I'm really curious if you still deal with anxiety? Did you find that you had to bring your anxiety down before you could work on your voice? As well, do you feel like that period of time still affects you emotionally? Sorry for the wall of text, but thank you for sharing your story!

Thank you for sharing your story! I am happy to hear you are doing a bit better. Many people don't realize just how much your voice can affect your whole life. Yes! I definitely still deal with anxiety but I have lots of strategies in place to help me function. I'd be happy to make a video on this if enough people were interested. A big yes to your second question! I will go into detail about this in my next video. In terms of still affecting me emotionally, I think my self-confidence did take a big hit which I'm still working on. However, as cliché as this sounds having a voice disorder taught me lots of really important life lessons. For example, I have gained so much empathy for others who are in situations that they can't control. I am not quick to judge others anymore. I wouldn't take back my voice disorder. Lastly, having a voice disorder inspired me to pursue a career in Speech Pathology to help others communicate.

@@SpeechMadeSimple Thanks for your response! I can relate to your last paragraph as well, and try to grateful for what I've learned through the experience. I'm sure that that will be valuable as you become a speech path! Look forward to your next videos :)
